That's true, but what Silva did was all a part of his normal strategy that has gotten him so many knockouts. Weidman wasn't biting the way everybody else has bit before, so Silva tried even harder, which turned his perceived vulnerability into actual vulnerability. I think if we saw Silva get in the boxing ring with anybody top level, we would see the same sort of thing. Weidman kept the distance and the feints right, and Silva wasn't able to get the aggressiveness from Weidman he wanted until he wasn't expecting it.

It's about time somebody exposed Silva. People don't fight tip top competition like that and get away with it on a regular basis, so when Silva was supposedly doing it, it meant something strange was going on. That strange thing is that all his opponents were playing Silva's game instead of countering it.

Granted it is still interesting to think that Silva could change everything and come out aggressive like a Leben or whatever, but ultimately that won't help him because he's gotten his KO's by not doing that. He's not like Wand, he can't charge in and get headshots. He has to bait his opponent. "Serious Silva" is a myth. He was as serious as usual in the first fight. He just got handled
  2. #1127
Silva does have a strong chance though. Weidman was not checking the leg kicks like he needed to, but they also weren't terribly damaging kicks. I do think the kind of analysis we got from Rogan, where Weidman was being foolish by standing up with Silva, is false. Apparently the nuances of the game showed that Silva was the one tactically losing the striking
  3. #1128
well, shit, that was brutal. gg silva. he has to retire now i imagine?

    edit: gif

  4. #1129
Did not want it to end like that. Seriously sucks. Anderson was on his game hardcore. The power in that kick was pretty hefty. Really shouldn't have ended like this. Too many question marks.

Wooooo on 3/3 in picks tonight. Almost at 3x increase in roll since started with the Vitor/Hendo fight. The Maynard over Diaz bet was idiotic. Very unlikely I'll be putting anything on the Weidman/Vitor fight. New Old New New Old TRT Vitor looks about as scary as can be, but it's still Vitor and if anybody can beat him, it's Weidman (and Machida)

Vitor is really interesting to me in that he's lasted so long + he started so young. He was 18 or 19, I forget which, in his first UFC events.

When people are kicking so hard that they break their own leg when checked by soft flesh, I think it's safe to say that drugs and training have reached a point of complete bananas absurdity.

Weidman says his coach calls the type of check a "destruction". IIRC, I first learned about the technique a couple years ago by the name "knee destruction" and wondered why it wasn't used more often. The technique is basically only lifting your leg slightly so that the impact point is your knee, as well as tilting the knee in the direction of the kick. Sometimes these checks can be so subtle in movement that they're hard to see

It's unfortunate that most people will come away from this fight thinking Silva had something for Weidman, but just like the first fight, the real story is that Weidman, strategically and technically, perfectly countered Silva and beat him at his own game. Even if Silva's leg hadn't broken, he would have had to stop kicking due to the sheer pain caused by Weidman's checks

We don't see this sort of thing happen as often (or maybe at all) in kickboxing because they've learned to set up their kicks better than MMA fighters. Apparently, all it took was somebody who actually knows what he's doing (Weidman) to use the correct techniques at the right time
  8. #1133

Example of Hoost doing the same thing to Sefo back in 02. Notice that Hoost was setting up all his kicks with punches and footwork, so Sefo couldn't counter them, but Sefo wasn't setting his up, which allowed Hoost the prime opportunity for the destruction. This as good as mirrors Weidman/Silva. Anderson didn't set the kick up properly and paid for it

Somebody wanna explain how Thomson is like +250 against Bendo? I was looking to avoid that fight, but as it gets closer to the day, my intuition is kicking in saying that Thomson should not be that big a dog

Thoughts on Miocic at -250? I was thinking of getting on that if it tightens before the fight, because he could keep it standing and win that way, but I'm not sure if that's the case. I haven't followed Miocic that much, but Gonzaga is probably gonna be overrated for similar reasons that Barnett was in his last fight.

Probably going to hit Sergio Pettis at whatever line because he's going to win because he's a Pettis
  10. #1135
glad i didnt bet on pettis. too much name recognition + too little experience = this sort of thing could happen
  11. #1136
so i get on the winner at +270 yet he still loses? christ
  12. #1137
money on condit and hendricks. then i'll bet on hendricks over condit.

im avoiding hendricks. got money on condit and lombard
  14. #1139
i put more effort into trying to figure out who to bet on for this card (just among three fights) than i have for others. we'll see if that pays off. we'll see if lombard can keep shields off him and crack him, if woodley fades by the second round, and if hendricks/lawler will be as close as i think
  15. #1140
dammit carlos. such a winnable fight. dude needs to stop leaping at wrestlers and instead work the angles and volume. woodley loses to most fighters with better cardio
  16. #1141
sad to say the next ww titleshot should go to diaz. who cares if he's not ranked and doesnt deserve it, lombard looked boring and woodley can't sell. especially if lawler wins, diaz vs lawler 2 would be fantastic

    Hey mother fuck Nick Diaz.

And not because he plays this bad guy whatever and I don't like him because of that.

He's a whiny fucking mental midget who was gift-wrapped a title shot off of a loss to Condit. Then he lost his title shot to GSP after talking all that good shit, then turned down a rematch with Condit saying he would only come back if he got a title shot rematch. Dude your last win was in 2011 against BJ Penn who lost two more after that before calling it quits.
  21. #1146
^^All true. I love a Diaz/Silva fight though. Nick will get STOMPED and I think it will finally put a stop to all this

Still, he's always been one of the most exciting fighters to watch.
  22. #1147
Could also see him getting the loser of Brown/Lawler.

We don't need more wolf tickets.
  23. #1148

also, lawler v brown was a war. great fight, looking forward to hendricks v lawler 2.
  24. #1149
    Humble is a monster

It's funny how shitty divisions only appear shitty momentarily. I remember back when everybody was saying GSP, Bones, and Silva were too dominant and we need them to move up and take super fights. Yet merely a year after that, each of those divisions is stacked as fuck. I don't know if LHW has ever had a line of contenders like this, and I doubt Bones can survive

silva vs diaz is on! words cannot describe how great a fight this is. the only problem is the possibility that abu dhabi silva might show up. other than that, it's as good a fight as can be made

Not saying it's gonna happen, but it's a much better fight than the dreg of all Ronda's other fights

A top athlete who trains right and has her mind right and has a better striking game than Ronda will beat her. So far, it almost appears like her opponents have gotten preemptive backroom bonuses to engage the clinch. If Bethe were capable of stopping the clinch game (she would be unless she's dumb) and could keep a pace, she could beat Ronda

Mous shouldn't be able to beat Jacare, and if Rothwell is healthy and has his head right, he paces and bullies Overeem
  35. #1160
About Ronda: you could list 30 male fighters who would beat her if they were females with their particular skill sets. Girl Machida, Girl Weidman, Girl Condit, Girl JDS, even Girl Jab n Jog GSP: all beat Ronda. The key to victory is stopping the clinch game, which is more than doable. So far everyone of Ronda's opponents have not only given zero thought to stopping the clinch game, but they've dove into it head first
  36. #1161
Cat Zingano can kick Ronda's ass
  37. #1162
She could, but only if she's better than the last time she fought. If Miesha gets takedowns on you, Ronda will destroy you

Nick Diaz in the news again

With the news that the prodigal UFC Welterweight has been arrested twice in the past year for DUI and has missed multiple court dates, his return bout against Anderson Silva is in doubt.

Yesterday's news that popular UFC fighter Nick Diaz has been arrested not once, but twice for DUI and missed multiple court dates has fight fans worried that yet another big MMA bout is in jeopardy. In this case, it's the UFC 183 return of the legendary Anderson Silva against Diaz, set for next Super Bowl weekend.

Diaz was first arrested on December 12th of last year and charged with DUI. He missed multiple court dates before finally surrendering on August 21 and making a $25,000 bail for his release. Then ten days later on August 31 he was arrested again.

    lol...
  44. #1169
god what a fuck up. all he had to do was stay straight for a few months and he would get paaaaaid.
  45. #1170
So I missed R2 in the Kennedy-Romero fight but saw the insanity going off on twitter. How the fuck did Romero scam 37 extra seconds? wtf?

mcgregor should leap frog cub and mendes and get a title shot because he's in peak form and confidence similar to anderson silva before he lost to weidman
  49. #1174
I think I agree, also because UFC doesn't have very many fights if any right now that can move the needle/drum up interest like this fight can

somewhat related: fans leaving en masse right now before mighty mouse fights cariaso

i wouldn't be against it, or that surprised, but i doubt he gets a title shot straight away. if he wins his next though, it's a guarantee.

edit - also, yeah, this card was amazing. hard to believe this card was also supposed to have cormier v jones as well.
  51. #1176
I got money on Jones and Cowboy, stocked for the fights this weekend. Don't see Cormier beating jones.
  52. #1177
you gonna lose that money holmes. cormier is comin, and he's bringing the business!

  59. #1184
probably better this way. gus or rumble are both even better matchups

he beat a guy who can cut to ww. has to be said.
  60. #1185
no way he cuts to ww, i could see mw.

once jones beats gus and rumble, then what huh?
  61. #1186
also, damn cowboy. love them "fuck you kicks".

Well, he could. Compare heights to others. If you were to design him from the beginning, the weight class should probably be ww but maybe mw if he carries a hector lombard level of muscle (he doesn't)

Also if he goes to mw he'll be stepping on Rockhold. Should be noted that Rockhold probably fares better against Jones. I had no idea the size difference was so extreme until last night. It seems that as fighters get lighter, they need to not give up as much height difference.

once jones beats gus and rumble, then what huh?
Then we jump off a bridge

I don't think he will beat them. Maybe Gus, but not Rumble. Didn't Gus already beat him? If Rumble doesn't have a skeleton in his MMA closet, he is a nightmare for Jones.
  63. #1188
i don't understand ufc's latest few title shot decisions.

WW: Rory promised #1 contender. After Hendricks v Lawler II, they change their mind and schedule Hendricks v Lawler III. I'd be more interested in seeing Lawler v Macdonald II and Hendricks v Lombard or Condit something. Hendricks last three fights now will be against Lawler. Gimme something new.

MW: Silva promised a title shot with a win over Nick Diaz.... why? Silva gonna crush Diaz then get dead by Weidman. Plus so many challenges for Weidman.

I hope Cerrone crushes Henderson, he's such a badass. LW is so deep though, 4-5 legit contenders, although Pettis seems above them all.

Also, lol @ the recent Jones controversy. First everyone talking about coke, but now the focus is on his suspicious T:E levels which may indicate some kind of PED fuckery. Which wouldn't surprise me really, I wouldn't be shocked if all the champs use some kind of PED.

blame the moron fans who only buy rematches of big namers

i think jones likely won't recover from this. if he is a heavy user of any drug and has to come off it or just experiences a lot of personal issues over it, it will affect him psychologically significantly. this could be the beginning of the end of his reign

not a fan of gus vs rumble since i want them both to fight jones. i loathe jones with a passion, so his loss couldnt come any sooner. people like him put me in a rage. fucking pompous hypocrites. i wouldnt be surprised if he qualifies as a sociopath
  66. #1191
Wow Rumble, that was intense. Lost some cash on that one, thought Gus would crush. Jones v Rumble sounds fun. Wuggy may have been on to something.
  67. #1192
    rumble is a scary man.

the best thing is that he has ko'd everybody who eye pokes him. iirc all within seconds/minutes of the eyepoke. jones won't see it coming
  68. #1193
i cant believe silva vs diaz is happening. such a crazy fight
  69. #1194
the only chance diaz has is if silva is having mental issues due to his past 2 fights. i expect silva to crush.

    basically

i find the fight a little hard to predict, but if it's anywhere close to standard, silva wins without getting in too much trouble
