< politic >

if you've never voted before , or do not vote because it ' does not matter ' , there is no better time than now !
we (americans) can either take this country back and start to make life better for ourselves , or we can continue down the self destructive path we currently enjoy . vote vote vote vote vote ! talk to people about this election , make sure all of your friends and family vote !

=p i hate being political , but i feel this is just about as important as it gets .

ron paul , 2008 <-- if you do not watch the debates in which he owns , read up on his stances . imho one of the most important , he is not willing to use preemptive *nuclear* strikes against Iran . he also wants the Federal Reserve destroyed along with our personal income taxes . ultimately bringing this country onto a proper bankroll .

its a win win win .

" "Have you ever voted in a political election? If so, why did you, given the extremely small probability of your vote mattering?"

Nope. For the reason stated. If I ever did, it would be because I thought it was the right play after weighing, my inconvenience, the closeness of the race (ie the chance my vote would swing it,) and the degree of importance to me to have one side win.

The argument that it is a symbolic gesture to thank those who died for my right to vote, is only reasonable if I was publicly proclaiming that voting is silly and bragging that I don't.

The argument "what would happen if everybody thought that way" again is only reasonable if I influence others not to vote, which I don't.

The comment "well if you don't vote, you have no right to complain", is obviously ridiculous except perhaps if you refrain when your vote would have swung things. "

<politics><imho>

indifference can lead to many ugly things .

yes , its true electronic voting machines can be hacked with a self-deleting program to swing elections , but to sit back and let it all happen is *imho* one helluva cop out .

i am not looking foward to the american dollar spiraling down to equal garbage . im not looking foward to extreemely unaffordable healthcare for my family and friends . i cannot afford to pay 4$++ for a gallon of gasoline . i do not want to be drafted when the whole of eastern europe and western asia erupt into flames . can one man or one election change all this ? hell no , but it can get us started as a nation in the right direction .

vote for whoever you feel is the right choice , the idea is to just voice your opinion . if you legitimately feel no one is up to the task , thats ok too . as long as you've at least done the minimal of research . to just not do anything , while it *is* your right .. is kinda lame .

Gabe, you're absolutely right, except on this point:

Telling people that there's no value in voting besides self-satisfaction (which I agree with) influences their decision. So either vote, or lie and tell everyone you do. Otherwise your reasoning falls apart.

Actually Florida proved Sklansky's (and gabe's) point. The system showed itself incapable of determining a winner when the margin of victory was as slim as 500 votes. There's too much error due to ambiguous ballots and voters of questionable eligibility.

Bill Frist is a lying cheating asshole and Ron Paul is a crazy libertarian who believes in next to no govt. But I like him.

Bill Frist is the guy who shoved through the UIGEA.

Ron Paul is alright. He owned Rudy in some debates I watched.

I'm pretty surprised to see Sklansky get this wrong. Just as, in poker, it's the aggregate that is important. No your vote will not likely change the outcome of an election. Nor will your action on any individual street usually affect your bankroll much.

Incidentally, I'm sympathetic to the "Don't vote; it only encourages them" line, because it is usually accompanied by action to take the rigged game out of "their" hands.

That's a very different sentiment and action than saying "Since I can't cast a thousand votes, I will cast zero"

(Note: more accurately would actually be "since I can't cast a thousand times as many votes as everyone else, I will cast zero")
