The Flyers look like a half-decent sleeper pick to me, I'm shocked no one thinks they can beat the Penguins.

Flyers are not really a sleeper pick... The reason no one is picking them to win is because they are playing against the 2012 Stanley Cup Champions in the first round. Unlucky for them...however, this win could change everything.
  11. #361
They were 8-2-1 or something vs. the Pens the past 2 years, and have now won all 6 games at their new arena.

I don't really know what to make of them since Bryz is so schizo, but he's also been the hottest goaltender in the league for the past month.

If Bryz stays hot they have most of the ingredients of a Cup contender:
    1. Ton of depth, featuring the league's No. 3 offense yet only 1 player who had over 30 goals.
    2. Legit superstar in Giroux.
    3. Proven veteran playoff performers (Jagr, Briere).
    4. Kids maturing at the right time (Schenn, Couturier)
    5. Several players remaining from Finals team of 2 years ago.

They're not one of the top 5 teams in the league and maybe not one of the top 10, but seems like a team that could make a lot of noise.

I think people are sleeping on the Rangers, too.

Yeah, everyone acknowledges that the flyers can win and very well may win. But the pens are a sexier team and it's not as if people's picks carry and weight or importance.

Still though, the flyers have shown that they can only win when the refs graciously ignore the rules and force feed them goals.

Lol, yes we should have won 3-2 in OT instead of 4-3.

Was wondering if I should've edited. Of all the pet peeves people have in this world, I don't understand that one.

EDIT: Though I should point out that this is like my favorite skit ever

Yeah, they're suffering from that Green Bay syndrome. Everyone mints you as the champion-elect and you end up DOA.

Usually, I like to cheer for the team that beats mine, but fuck the flyers.
  20. #370
It's funny, I always liked the Penguins. It's always been the Rangers, Devils and even the Caps that I hated more. Despite the fact the Flyers and Pens played an epic 7-game series in '89, I always liked a lot of their players. I'd go to games and whistle at Jagr, but I thought he was great. Lemieux was the greatest player I've ever seen; I went to a game at the Spectrum that was his first game since coming back from cancer, and we gave him a 2-minute standing ovation.

Of course, the Flyers have a historical reputation for being a rough-and-tumble team, and have been Public Enemy No. 1 in the NHL for decades.

It says a whole helluva lot when Rangers/Devils fans are rooting for the Flyers.

This flyers/pens series is just epic. At this point I don't care who wins it, but nothing would be better than for it to get to a game 7.

You think this is funny!? You don't know my pain!

Honestly though, everyone is pretty low on the Pens and the organization right now. I don't much mind. Playoffs are a wild thing; they hardly ever go as you would expect but the Pens are getting roflstomped embarrassed and have seemingly become what they truly hate - petulant little bastards.

I rather hope that people start to blame all this on losing Talbot. I always loved Talbot and he is made for the playoffs. If there was one guy who could elevate this team to playing like they're worth a damn, we let him go.

Yeah. And the reason 9/11 happened is because of a pocket knife.
  25. #375
Fleury's given up some bad goals, but honestly Bryz has given up just as many.

I've always tried to give Crosby the benefit of the doubt, but he's been exactly what the most irrational Flyers fans have always said: an annoying little POS. This must be exactly what Bobby Clarke was like in the 1970s.

I could not have envisioned a series in which the Flyers just outgunned the Pens but that's basically what's happened. Every time the Pens score what seems to be a backbreaking goal or in Game 3, when they got within 1, the Flyers would answer, almost immediately.

Giroux is a superstar, arguably the greatest offensive talent the organization has ever had except for Lindros. The rookies have taken turns dominating, first Schenn, then Couturier, then Read. Rilla's absolutely correct in saying that Talbot is an immense playoff performer and heart-and-soul guy, and Jagr and Briere have flown under the radar but have been brilliant.

This flyers/pens series is just epic. At this point I don't care who wins it, but nothing would be better than for it to get to a game 7.
If this series gets to Game 7 it's unlikely that either team will be able to field 4 lines because of suspensions/injuries.

I should note that I don't expect the Flyers to win the whole thing, first because the Pens winning 4 straight isn't implausible. Also because they'd need someone to knock off the Rangers just to get out of the EC. (Healthy Pronger and I'd like our chances though, damnit!)

But I pretty much gave up on this team years ago because, under the Clarke GM tenure, I realized they would just keep doing the same stupid shit over and over. Lavi is the best coach they've had since Keenan, and much less of a prick (at least to his own players). With the kids, Lavi and Holmgren, I feel like this team has a future for the first time since the early Lindros days.

As it was going, people were going to dump all over Fleury even though the entire team had been complete crap in front of him.

If people are going to get it wrong, I prefer they get it wrong in favor of missing Talbot than shitting on Fleury, you know?

Pens AND Nucks coming back from 3-0 in the same season would be awsome.

Hoping the Preds can close this out Friday. Not real happy about how they're playing even though they're winning. Doesn't seem to be playoff attitude on the part of the Preds.

    from philly.com

WITH HIS skates finally untied and his equipment shed, Max Talbot took an extra second to soak in the emotion and glory of eliminating the Penguins team he had spent the last six seasons with, before a low-ball offer brought him to Philadelphia last summer.

All season, Talbot said he had a feeling the Flyers and Penguins would meet in the first round - an eventuality he was well-prepared to face.

He finished with three goals and an assist in six games, and as a plus-5. All three of Talbot's goals were on special teams.

"Max and I had a lot of conversations in my office, talking about personnel, players we're not as familiar with that maybe come in because of injury, systems and we go over it," Laviolette said. "I think any time you get a player that is well-versed on the opponent, you spend a lot of time with them. I think you utilize what you can. Not only was Max great on the ice, maybe one day he'll make a great coach as well."

Aside from the standard lolmerica racism in that image, what's with the guy never wanting to see Tim Thomas in a Bruins jersey ever again? Does he not remember last year or did something happen this year that I'm not aware of?

So the blatantly racist twitter poster is upset Thomas didn't go visit the black president? Good stuff.

But yeah, I guess fans in general are just dumb. I never leave the house to watch games any more because I can't stand it when I overhear a clueless hockey [playoff] fan spouting some kind of unwarranted criticism. Or the fan whining "Shoot the puck!" when the team is trying to set up a play rather than blindly blast a shot that is currently set to be blocked.

you don't get to say 'correct except wrong team winning' when you guessed 4-1 for the wrong team.

    Round 1

    [] Van>LA 4-1 LOL WTG Quick
    [x] STL>SJ 4-1 ON THE MONEY
    [] DET>NSH 4-3 Go NSH
    [] CHI>PHX 4-1 Sick series. Go PHX!

[] NYR>OTT sweep - holy carp that was close
[] BOS>WAS sweep - lol wtf where did u come from
    [] NJ>FLA 4-2 - mother fuckers
    [] PIT>PHI 4-3 - I give up

1/8 is soooo lol bad. A monkey could pick better than me.

    Round 2

    STL>LAK 4-2
    NSH>PHX 4-3
    NYR>WSH 4-3
    PHI>NJD 4-1

There won't be much scoring in this round. Defense/Goaltending has been fantastic thus far for the remaining teams. (other than PHI but they face the best goalie of all time)
