    Default NFL Week 3 Thread

    random thoughts:

PIT is going to show SF that the AFC North isn't. the NFC West.

BAL going to show ARI that the AFC North isn't the NFC west.

    MIN @ KC lol

I like Tampa Bay over St Louis. I called them over the Aint's last week too, and I've made it a point even before the season started to let everyone know how discustingly overrated the Aints were last year and this year. Bucs underrated too, IMO. FWIW, I still want to see NO succeed b/c of katrina and all, I just don't really think they are that good.

CLE @ OAK... I don't really follow sports betting but I'd imagine that it would be a pick'em game on a neutral field so I'm guessing OAK-3 for this. Seems reasonable... there's a TON of optimism right now in Cleveland but I think Anderson and the O is going to have a tough time in Oakland against a very underrated oakland D. I expect defenses to shine in a tough close game. I'll say Oakland by, uh, 3.

pats gonna roll to 3-0 no problem. They made the chargers look like whiny little girls the other night.

    i don't know

I'll only get to watch a couple of games this weekend because I'm going to Houston for the Colts game. I've been saying since the summer that the Texans are underrated and they still are IMO. I expect the Colts to win but they shouldn't be getting 6 points. I haven't been to a Colts game in a couple of years so I'm really looking forward to this.

Even if Houston looks bad this weekend, they have a real solid chance at a Wild Card. I like them more than any AFC team except New England, Indianapolis, Pittsburgh, San Diego, and Baltimore. Denver and Jacksonville are both really overrated IMO and they're playing each other this weekend. Jacksonville in particular had lost four games in a row before squeaking past Atlanta this weekend and I have no idea why anyone thinks they're good.

I don't think any of the NFC South teams are in the top 8 of the NFC. Carolina is probably the best team in that division, but I'm not impressed with them at all. I'm actually thinking of betting on Atlanta against them if the line changes by a point or two (it's at +4 now)

To be honest this is a pretty crappy week of games. The only games that look interesting to me are
    IND @ HOU
    SD @ GB
DET @ PHI (only because I'm not sure if the Lions are for real and this is their first test)

Well Kitna will be ready to go, hopefully he wont' take any huge hits this week.

I wouldn't be surprised if Houston wins this week, but they need Andre Johnson to be healthy and I hear there are questions about his health.

Texans will upset the Colts, and every knee jerk suit on TV will hop on the bandwagon.

raiders will find a way to lose. niners offense is too bad to score on pittsburgh and it will be like 24-14 with turnovers getting the 49ers points.

Tampa I think also will win, I have always thought Garcia was a great QB.

I can't wait for Favre to roll over the Chargers. The only bad thing is LT is on my fantasy team, too bad he won't be scoring at all.

FO publishes their ratings every week but I'm sure they wouldn't argue that the ratings are anywhere near accurate yet.

There are no opponent adjustments in VOA until the fourth week of the season, which is why it is VOA right now rather than DVOA. Instead, we use DAVE, which combines the preseason projection with the results of early games to give us a better prediction of how each team will rank at the end of the year. In this week’s DAVE ratings, the preseason projection counts for 75 percent, and the current VOA counts for 25 percent.

I've got mixed feelings about him right now. On one hand, I really like him. I like the way he motivates our players, the message he sends as head coach, etc. I also like the fact that he turned our defense around from one of the worst to respectable, and it's getting better by the day.

The thing I don't like, and maybe this is more of a Dick Vermiel-induced hangover type of thing because our offense was so spectacular for a five year stretch......is that our offense is fucking pathetic. It's not totally his fault, though. Our O-line has taken a few big hits over the past two years (losing two HOF-caliber players) so our running game is bad. We've got Damon freaking Huard at QB (what a joke), and the future of our franchise looks like it's going to be Brodie Croyle (lol at that one). We've never had top flight receivers but we had a kick-ass running game so we could get away with it....now with no run-game our receivers are looking more like they *should* look (ie: terrible). Tony Gonzalez is our only real threat, but without QB/O-line/running game/good receivers he can't make an impact......

    So, pretty much we suck.

Our play calling was really shady last week, too. We had a bunch of third and shorts. Give the ball to freaking LJ, don't throw a fade pass to some shitty receiver. Give the ball to your $40 million dollar man. And when it's third and long, put the ball in the air and don't run it, at least give us a chance to get the first down...

So, defensively we're better....but our offense sucks and I'm not sure we're heading the right direction with that. It's going to take a few years to turn over the roster on offense via free agency and the draft. I like Herm, a lot, I just hope he can last that long to finally get some better players in here to give him a chance to win.

third and one, kind of late in the game, we're still somewhat in it.....hand the ball to LJ, no stupid fade pattern to the five-foot-eight Sammie Parker please (or whoever the fuck it was throw to, the ball was intercepted)

Tony Gonzalez said the whole offense isn't on the same page, from head coach to assistants to players. I agree with him.

P.S. It hasn't been on the same page all year, even in the preseason.

Until you missed the FG. haha.

But let's say you make that FG. Then you lose 20-6. Is that much better?

    The NFC is sad.

The Pats, Steelers, Chargers, Colts and possibly the Ravens are better than any team in the NFC.

<3 it, just sucks that my team is terrible and your team actually looks like they might be the real deal. I'm not 100% sold on them yet, but me (and everyone else) is starting to warm up to the idea that they might be pretty damn good. If you can somehow pull it off against the Colts, especially with Andre Johnson hurt, people are definitely going to be drinking the kool-aid.

I really liked the guy in his early years as a Jet... then he started slipping there and hasn't really shown too much in KC to be honest.

I know we're only 2 weeks in, but I just can't remember the last time a team coming off a playoff birth has come out the next season looking so bad...

also I was just reading some article that referred to Rex Grossman as Wrecks Grossman. Maybe Jamurda can clear it up whether that's standard talk in chi-town, but I want everyone to know that I hold exclusive rights to that name on FTR.

Hey, hey easy. Last year Pittsburg looked pretty pathetic 4 games into the season, and they were coming off a Superbowl victory. We barely squeaked into the playoffs last year.
Jared Allen coming back this week will make a huge difference in our pass rush. The offense is still crap, but our defense should be even better this weekend at ARROWHEAD!!

We were not a playoff team last year. Okay, technically we made it into the Playoffs and had a game against the Indianapolis Colts where they absolutely DESTROYED us.....but we were not playoff worthy last year. We were the same team we've been the last thirteen years or so. Good enough to have a chance, good enough not to suck.....but by no means good enough to contend at all.

We were a 9-7 team last year and were lucky to do that. We needed the miracle of all miracles to get into the playoffs too. Four teams had to lose on the final day of the season, and I think three (if not all four) of those teams were at home. Yeah we were a "playoff team" but we definitely never played like one last year.

The defense gets a big shot in the arm and should be even better with Jared "A.A." Allen coming back.....but the offense will still suck. Last time I checked you needed to put points on the board to win, and I don't see us doing much of that this year at all.

All I know is, give Herm a chance. It takes three full years to turn around a franchise, whether that's at the high school level or the highest level of play there is. We're in year two, and this year we're going to suck. Next year we should be starting to turn the corner.....hopefully by year four we have a chance to contend for the playoffs and maybe more. I'm not holding my breath, though.

Good defense + Arrowhead + LJ + QB that won't turn it over+ playing Vikings = victory

You're probably right, but the Texans have some very speedy receivers and Indy's secondary was decimated in the offseason. AJ isn't as big of a loss as you might think.
