So I've made some good money in the last two months at the poker tables, winning money is definately cool. But now I want to win more. I'm not a gambler, but I'm very interested in playing the NFL every week. I'm a die hard football fan, and I believe I can call games against the spread at least 55% of the time. So I think this should be a profitable venture. I've always been to scared to put my own money down, but now that I have all this poker money I'm interested. Anyone else bet regularly on the NFL? If so how did you do? Do you recommend it? Any tips? what's the best site to play at?

I have been betting football for years, mostly the NFL. The NFL is a tough sport to handicap well and come out ahead if you are looking to do weekly betting. I used to run some books and the people who bet 5 or so games every week were the biggest losers by far. What you really want to do is look at the games every week and see if there is any really good value out there then just bet those games. Before i was a break even handicapper at best when i would try to bet on several games per week. But now i may only bet one or two games a month but i always come out ahead at the end of the year. If you are just going to deposit $100 and bet $5 games for fun i would say go with it and bet a couple per week. Also another good way is to find a friend and say you each take turn picking 5 games a week and play for $5 a game. This way the money stays between the two of you and not off to some bookie or site where you arent getting 1/1 on your money. But if you want to get serious there are some other forums and stat places that you need to start checking out searching and looking for that right game to go big on.
good luck to you either way!

To cover the spread. You want a team with uber offense and no deff.

It makes no difference anyway.

You're going to have to do your own research, if you want to cap games at 55%. How do you plan on going about doing that?

Pretty hard to overcome a 10% vig on sports betting. I'd treat it as an entertainment expense, not a way to make a profit. Poker you've got fish to help you beat the rake, but sports betting you gotta beat the oddsmakers and those guys know their shit.

I've been betting football for a few years now, and its true, You get to love the action. But if your betting NFL look for value bets, I think someone else mentioned that. This year, look for cincy to cover a lot of games because the team is a lot better offensively and the lines won't move as much on them. Last year Indy and Philly covered almost every over. If you wanna bet NFL look at totals, and take an over if you like it. The over is the one bet that once it hits, u can't lose, whether its 1st or 4th quarter. Just bet smart, 3 games a week max. Visit scoresandodds.com, it has the best stats I have found. good Luck

It seems like the story of many good poker players starts with them winning a ton of cash through playing poker ... and then immediately losing it all on sports betting.

There are a couple sites that show sportsbook odds side by side, in columns. One of the books I noticed with consistantly favorable odds is SportingBet, although I haven't used them -- I will be using them eventually, I'm sure, as I've done their casino and am in the middle of their poker room now.
Bet365 is easy to use, and their odds are better than InterTops (relative tightwads, unfavorable odds), plus they offer some bonuses from moving your money around from book to casino to poker.
