God I fucking hate the Steelers offense. Teams w/pash rushers that aren't pussy faggots who tire out in the 4th just win every time vs. them. And wtf w/Hines Ward? I think I hate the Steelers more than any other team..simply b/c I'm tired of seeing Big Ben running around breaking arm tackles.

Ok, he's not my home team so I don't know how much local stuff he does, but Manning is turning into an endorsement whore.

Need to post this somewhere, where is the love for DeAngelo Williams?
Peterson this, Turner that, Adrian Peterson this, blahblahblah, nobody ever talks about D. Williams who is probably the best back in the league.

I live in Oklahoma. I grew up a Cowboys fan (in the 90s when they were annoying but good) and will always be one. I'm a Sooner fan first, and AP is by far my favorite player in the history of football, so I'll always be a fan of whatever team he is on. Couldn't care less about Favre. Became a Peyton Manning fan around 2000 and have been one since. I'm sorry the Texans mostly blow, suspenders :P
D. Williams the best back in the league? Erm....I'll just leave that alone because the debate couldn't be fruitful.

here I'll do it for you, AP 4.8 average ***9 fumbles*** but since he gets nearly all the carries he's the best fantasy back and he looks pretty in commercials so he's the best back.

and to be fair, I think AP is an absolutely phenomenal player, he's physically punishing and a great workhorse as well, people just are too quick to call him the best. He also hasn't been helped by the QB/WR situation.
I'll call him one of the best. The fumbles thing is a big issue though.

We'll bring this up after D.W. has a second season under his belt. It took him three years to earn the starting job I presume (don't really follow Panthers football) and he played well in his first full season. The fact that he has fewer carries is an argument for both sides, implying that he is fresher so conceivably should have a higher YPC. Also I can't imagine Steve Smith having anything to do with their running game's success. Fumbles clearly detract from Peterson but it's rather hard to coronate someone with so little starting experience/not having the single greatest performance by a running back in a NFL game :P

I didn't say this. I said he's probably the best back in the league. To understand the difference, I think Tom Brady is the best QB in the league but if I were starting a franchise or was the GM of a franchise, he isn't the first player or QB I'd build a team around.
Back to Williams, I think he is the best back based on what I've seen in games from him and the numbers he put up (and didn't put up) last year. I wish the Panthers were on TV more. But, at the very least, he had the best statistical year of any RB last year and I don't *think* anybody would dispute that.
This year my argument looks bad based on week 1, but I'm not about to change my opinion after 1 week, especially not after a half of gashing the Browns D.
side note: the Browns are still the Browns. Can't run, can't pass, can't rush the passer, and can't stop the run. But they scored a touchdown on special teams.

1. Picking a franchise player at a position and who you think is the best player at that position do not have to be the same person, and frequently won't be.
2. Ok if you think I'm on crack. Name one RB who had a better season in '08. Just one.
3. I understand that #2 doesn't necessarily prove my point; I don't care.

This argument won't go very far just because RBs in the NFL have such a short shelf life. If an entire season isn't enough to prove an RB is legit, then by the time he does prove he's legit he'll probably already be past his prime. The only thing I'm sure of is that Williams played better than Peterson last year.
I only caught half the Colts game and snippets of a few other games today but I liked what I saw. The Colts defense looked a lot stronger than last year, and the offense played all right outside of a fluke INT. The only really bad thing is that Joe Addai appears to be done (in his 4th year, haha).

New topic which I swear was already brought up, maybe it was in another thread.
Richard Seymour traded to the Raiders for *2011* first round pick. I think it's brilliant on New England's part. They avoid paying a huge contract and instead get a future first round pick (and likely a high one at that) in what should be the first year under the new CBA, and very likely an adjustment to the rookie salaries at the top of round 1 will be made as part of that.
Of course it won't help them the next two years, but New England's success has been based partly on giving up short term value for more long term value. I think they're already at (3) 2nd round picks next year??

Yea the Colts looked solid. They still can't convert any 3rd/4th and 1s on the ground but the thing I'm worried about is our receiver depth. Gonzo is out for awhile and the names Collie and Garcon aren't anything for any defense to be afraid of. I don't really understand Addai...it's like he hears footsteps in the backfield. If only they'd drafted MJD instead...

D-Williams is a sick back. He had the best 2008 season out of any running back, no one can really debate that...but Peterson is still the better RB. Look at Williams' 1st and 2nd halves last year.
1st 8 games:
525 yards, 3 TDs
These numbers are so mediocre, that I actually traded him in one of my fantasy leagues last year and then he went on to do this:
2nd 8 games:
993 yards, 15 TDs
Now it could be argued that the Panthers finally realized how good he actually was and started getting him the ball more (He did have 32 more carries in the 2nd half), but it could also be argued that he caught fire for 8 games and will regress back to more normal stats this year. Whatever the case is, I think it's a little too early to start calling him the best back in the NFL based on what basically amounts to 8 games. Until he proves those 8 games weren't a fluke, I don't think we can put him in the same conversation as Peterson.
One more think I want to add, look at Ryan Grant's stats from the last 9 games of 2007:
929 yards, 8 TDs
Obviously not as good as D-Wil's 2nd half but still great numbers. What did he do in 2008? He was very average, only rushing for 1203 yards and scoring only 4 TDs despite playing in all 16 games. I'm not saying Williams will regress like this, in fact Williams might have another monster year. But let's just wait a little bit before we start calling him the best back in the NFL.

Good post Bob. In fairness, I said "D. Williams who is probably the best back in the league." Probably.. indicating a sense of hesitation. Somehow that got turned into franchise RB discussion and people telling me I'm crazy etc.
At minimum I'll say this: if a player, especially at a position like RB, has the best season of any player at his position the previous year, it can't be *THAT MUCH* of a stretch to call him the best at his position. Beyond that I'll just defer to Mcat's and Bob's posts on why it's a fruitless discussion. Just remember I made my comment in the context of asking why nobody *ever* talks about Williams, despite being a really, really sick player. 5.5 average with 0 fumbles is hard to appreciate.

Found this interesting (John Abraham getting 2 sacks on Jake Long): http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/m...3441137.column
I bring it up because one of the positives I came away from the Browns-Vikings fiasco was how Joe Thomas absolutely manhandled Jared Allen the entire game. Like, they'd engage and then they'd stop.
Actually I remember telling Spenda 4 players to watch on the Browns,
Shaun Rogers
Joe Thomas
Josh Cribbs
D'Qwell Jackson
All 4 showed up with big games, a couple others I thought played pretty well, unfortunately the rest of the team played 1 half at most.
