We are one week away from the NFL Draft.
The single greatest holiday of the year for me. The interplay between the college kids we've watched and the NFL teams we analyze and root for... it's just fucking brilliant. Mix in a full day of heavy drinking, BBQ, and the retelling of a million old stories with a dozen old college friends (not to mention to total absence of my wife and kids!).. and it's easily the best holiday of the calender year.
One week baby, ONE WEEK!!!!!!
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOT

Frankly, I prefer Super Bowl Sunday, Thanksgiving Day, New Years Day, any day of March Madness, any day of the NBA playoffs... you know days when sports actually get played.

Best part of draft day in any sport:
watching the last person who was invited to the draft have to wait so long before they actually get drafted, I love it.

loved the Oilers growing up, loved McNair, hated the Cowboys. So, living in TX when they moved to Tennessee I kept rooting for them. Also, even though I hate TU, I loved Vince Young, so when they drafted Vince I stayed a Titans fan.
Now, I live in Houston and going to 4-5 home games this year (thanks Ed) made me become a spirited Texans fan. I realized that when I went to the Texans/Titans game I ended up rooting for the Texans, which told me, that I was now more of a Texans fan than a Titans fan.

Anyone hear Jeff Ireland's quote? sounds like he might be leaning towards Gholston? I think Gholston and McFadden are the two freakishly talented standouts this year, (same way Calvin Johnson and Peterson where last year) and even with a major need at another position you have to think twice about passing on either. McFadden especially has the right combination of ncaa productivity and top flight talent.

who remembers that kid that the 49ers drafted a couple years ago, maybe even last year, the TE from Maryland maybe.
Anyways, he was a "Freak" and I didn't hear from him all year.

Spenda, I agree its important not to rank 40 times etc ahead of actual football ability/production but the point I'm trying to make is that if you have 2 top college players with fairly similar levels of success at college level, and one is has a significant physical advantage over the other, take the better athlete unless he has major character red flags saying hes a waster, because hes more likely to reach a dominant level in the NFL. In this case im advocating Gholston over Chris Long.
I agree that vernon davis hasnt totally set the world alight, but if we look closer at his career so far hes actually shaping up quite well. After missing a lot of his rookie year due to, i think, a broken leg he had 52 catches for 500 yards in 14 games last season, while playing on a shockingly bad 49ers O, where he had to block too much due to bad o-coordinator and multiple o-line injuries. plus when he did get to run routes he was catching passes from either an over the hill Dilfer or an injured Alex Smith. Given all that i don't think its a stretch to expect him to start knocking out 800 or 900 yard seasons if/when he ends up on a competent offense. outside of gates and maybe winslow that would put him in top tier of TEs i think..

I follow ALL of college football... and ALL of pro football... I'm a fanatic.
I don't have a clue how anyone can get excited over a sport where the players don't even try for 75 games out of the year (NBA). Sure they actually move in the playoffs, but I just think it sucks. (i do realize there are a few teams these days that actually run a bit... what a novel idea..)...
Turkey Day is great due to food, but over the last 8 years rarely due to quality teams playing in the games.
New Year's Day is great... I love it, but being around family every year for this makes it less fun.... I'm old mind you.
March Madness coverage totally blows for the first several days... they capture some exciting moments and some great games, but they need to reformat how/when the teams play....
I recognize that some people don't get it, and that's fine... but this makes about the 12th year in a row I've followed the draft closely... and I love it. It's the best day of the year.

Why bother drafting a playmaker for the Titans... VY can't deliver the ball anyway... (lol)... There aren't any STRONG picks at WR.. almost all have personal, injury, or maturity concerns. Good luck!
RB is the EASIEST position in the entire NFL... show me a team with a great OL that doesn't have a successful running game due to lack of a playmaker at RB..... /w the Cards, Lions and a few others... ahead of them, the Texans might not get a crack at Mendenhall, or Stewart... it's hard to say though obv... Felix Jones is expected to fall past them. If I were Houston GM.. I'd draft OL (if one of the big Tackles falls to them).. then go for a RB in rounds 2 or 3.
If McFadden falls to #6 I think the Jets will scoop him up... I think it's a coinflip whether the Raiders go for Gholston or McFadden.

if mcfadden went to the pats, we might actually see a perfect season next year. i would laugh really hard if they went 18-1 again though.

I really expect the Chiefs to try to trade down.. if they don't I think it'll be Sedric Ellis, DT, USC, or they might reach for an OL.. either Ryan Clady or Branden Albert.
The Jared Allen deal apparently is done except for compensation... but due to King Carl's highly moronic dealings... and his need to squeeze blood from a stone (see the eternity it took to move Trent Green last year.. omg). I wouldn't be surprised if it doesn't happen...

Because he won't sign a long term deal w/ KC... so they could keep franchising him... or trade him at his highest potential value. Also if he fucks up one more time... he's suspended for one year.

not even sure what the packers really need that bad, which is a good thing, but i would guess that we pick a cb since harris/woodson are getting older.

You can google any limitless number of draft sites to find the below info but meh.. I'm fucking jacked up...
Miami: I expect them to sign one of the Longs... Jake or Chris. Both are high floor, medium to high ceiling guys... but the fact that both are highly unlikely to be busts makes them as good a pick as any to throw tens of millions of dollars of guaranteed money to... (comment: I think the salary structure for rookies is fucking awful... this is one area where the NBA gets it right. <--- the nicest thing I will ever say about the NBA)
49ers: This team is still a big mess. I don't really know wtf Mike Nolan is doing, I like the fact that he wants to wear suits on gameday (boc) but what's with the revolving door at offensive coordinator. Way to give Alex Smith 0% chance of success.... Anyway.. they lose Smily and Allen on the OL.. and the other guys they have are young or a bit bashed up. I would expect them to go OL w/ their first pick but WR, and/or BPA. At that point in the draft the niners could even stand to trade down for somebody looking to land Flacco...
Packers: Packers will likely take BPA, though CB and TE seem to be fairly high on their list of needs. Some people think they'll look at RBs.. but i think that would be highly stupid. If they do... look for a 5-6th round like Mike Hart or Tony Temple as a change of pace guy to Ryan Grant.

Quick thoughts on drafting players based off of college success vs. predraft workouts.
If a player was successful in college, but totally blows in all predraft workouts... that's bad. The fact is many players in college have great success due to one (or maybe two) distinguishing traits that makes them substantially better than their competition. They are simply bigger than or faster than most of their opponents. The don't have to work on ALL aspects of their game because it's unnecessary to crush 90% of the people against whom they play. These edges (whether they be in strength, size, or speed) are decreased substantially in the NFL. These guys should be drafted much later than the first or second round. For a recent, blatant example see DeWayne Jarrett.
Some will advocate downgrading great players on the field just because they fail to wow during predraft workouts... this is very stupid. There is way more to playing football than the time in which a 300+ lb man can run a 40 yd dash. If a guy looks outstanding on tape, but just decent (not wowsers) in shorts and a T-shirt... he's probably a very solid pick.
Now, the biggest mistake teams make is the player that has done jack squat for his entire collegiate career and then simply goes crazy at predraft workouts. See Chris Henry, RB, Ari drafted by the Titans last year. The most classic is Mike Mamula... LB drafted by the Eagles in '95.

If cowboys take a running back it better be Mendenhall. Why the hell would you take Jones? Mendenhall is as fast or faster than Jones and a better all round runner.

not sure how i feel about this draft so far...
jordy nelson look like a good pick mainly because i really trust ted thompson after getting us jennings and jones. he picked jennings over chad jackson who was really hyped up by the combine.
brian brohm i dont really like, i think rodgers will be very good so just bring in a veteran backup.
the cornerback looks good. would have rather just gotten a higher talent one earlier though. but again i trust thompson so ill just wait and see how this turns out.

A) Jordy Nelson is bad ass. You can do what you want at the combine, that kid did it on the field.
B) Cowboys took ANOTHER TE in the second round. Ummm, yay I guess. Cowboys should have hired Parcells as GM, that old coot knows how to build a team. With Jones running the show again it's back to the dark ages I guess.
Parcells= bringing in Tony Romo undrafted and grabbing Marion Barber.
Jones= Burning a decade of first round picks on Galloway and drafting Quincy Carter.
