Here's my thing:
I love the Blackberry solely for the Messenger service that is shared with fellow Blackberry owners. It's by far the best thing about any phone.
I am open to other ideas though.

iphone 4!
Are you sure the messenger service is only for blackberry users? I remember seeing something called whatsapp that could do what you say between blackberry/iphone iirc.

using it as a portable modem for a fraction of the cost of the i4 > all other things considered.
Also, cmon it's call the Android. Androids eat blackberries and apples for breakfast

I have the blackberry bold and love it. Like you I am also addicted to bbm and that was a huge factor in getting a new blackberry instead of an iphone or something else.
I'd vote blackberry.

When I had a BB I loved BBM too. I have an iphone now and I miss BBM for sure, but I get by with texting. Everything else about the iphone is way better than BB IMO.

Yes the battery life isn't great and you'll have to buy a car charger but that's not really a deal breaker when the phone is so good. I can understand not getting an Evo if you don't live in a 4G market, but if you do then there's really no reason not to get one. If you do live in a 4G market then you can browse the internet at broadband speeds anywhere. The iPhone can't do this.
The phone is simply the nuts.

From what I understand, Kik is not BBM. Kik works like BBM but you will need all your Blackberry contacts to have Kik on their phone to message them with it. BBM is like MSN or AIM and is free for BBM users only.

yes you need them to have it, but it is free. you can send a request for all your contacts with bb's and iphones to get it. i was just mentioning it because i don't think BBM should be the reason for your choice.

yes i own one and I love it. I've read a load of reviews too and they've all seemed positive apart from one tiny antenna problem...

Hmm well I live in the uk and have pretty much never heard of 4g but it sounds sick good and I want. I can see why you would get the droid if you had the option of broadband internet on a phone everywhere...
That review is very close until the iphone's antenna issues are mentioned but I mean it's not really a big deal since it doesn't affect many people and you get a free case when you buy the phone because of it... And I think if you're that desperate to use the phone without a case and hold it in that way then it can be fixed with nail polish iirc. I think it was just how badly apple handled it which turned it into a big deal. Like the evo and the battery life, it's a small problem for such a good phone.

I saw the evo the other day in a sprint store and thought it was very cool (I have an iphone 4 fwiw). Be sure to buy a case for it...a picture frame should do...since it's so fucking big...or a man purse. Same with he droid X.

Also, I think the android app market will catch the iphone market with the next 12-18 months. I think it will be superior in 18-24 which played a major reason into why I went with the iphone 4 (my last iphone I hope). I also didn't know about the stupid antenna bullshit.
I think it really comes down to what carrier you want. Granted, the evo has 4g but guess what? 4G doesn't matter when it's only in a few cities and barely works well there due to bandwidth, etc.
Sprint = HTC EVO
Verizon = Droid X
AT&T = Iphone 4

Also, regarding battery life. If you buy a smart phone you accept the new phone culture of plugging your phone into your computer at work, at night, etc. No smart phone lasts exceptionally longer than the others. Deal with it.

In the future, situations like Northern Ireland and Rwanda will exist but based on how you feel about Smartphone brands instead of religion or race.

Yeah, I mean the main difference between the phones is 4G. If you don't have access to the 4G network then there's really nothing to separate the two phones and the iPhone is probably better since Sprint charges you $10 for 4G access with the Evo even if you don't live in a 4G market.

This. I have a 3GS upgraded to the 4.0.3 iPhone OS and haven't noticed any significant decrease in battery life, although there were a lot of tech blogs moaning about it with the launch 4.0 OS. As it is, I can still go more than 24hours without recharging for casual use and if I'm using it to listen to iTunes or watch vids it's docked and charging most of the time anyway - at home, in the office and in my car.

Ive had the Evo for about a month now. The battery life sucks bad. It will last me through a day of work, but if I have something to do for a couple hours after work and am not around a power supply I am screwed. Also, I pay $10 a month for 4g and havent seen the 4g network. I would have gotten the iphone4 instead of Evo if I didnt hate at&t so much.

My first gut reaction reads like this:
Is he talking about the amount of 'conflict' materials in these smart phones? Don't blackberries have the same amount?
Then I thought, Maybe he's talking about religious persecution but we're subbing in Stevie Jobs and Google for Jesus and Mohammed. But... what does that have to do with Northern Ireland and Rwanda.
So...
You're fat.
Drew, if you like Blackberry, you can't lose. Stick with BB, switch to Iphone, move to Droid - You'll look brilliant in all cases. It isn't about your phone versus your neighbor's phone, it's about getting a phone.

I'm not a smartphone owner yet, but I can't imagine any messaging service is awesome enough that it's the deciding point for a phone.
Isn't it just like regular IM, except limited to only blackberry users?
