So ya, all of vqchuangs threads about his super-cool gadgets was starting to bug me, so this is a thread where we can all NOT! talk about gadgets. Anything but gadgets, in this thread.
I will start with Baseball. Who else hates Sammy "Say it Ain't" Sosa because he is a bat corking cheater? I mean, shangri la, the day I found out Sammy corked his bat was worse than the day I found out the decks on Party Poker were juiced. I mean, honestly, corking a bat is like... well, i cant even think of anything to compare it too, because if sombody was doing something really slimy and dishonest, I would say "that is worse than corking your bat!"

i think they should clear every home run from sammy sosa's record because of his corked bat... who knows how long he's been corking, and should disqualify every single homerun. that will teach players not to cork their bats.

sorry im more of an NBA fan myself

Please.
Sammy corking a bat is no worse than a 40-year-old pitcher snotting the ball. Steroids are a far worse perversion of the game.

Corking a bat is way worse than snotting a ball. Steroids are bad too. But I still say corking your bat is worse.
the NBA is teh suck too. When Reggie Miller leaves this year, it will be the end of the classy NBA. Remember the days of Karl "The Mailman" Malone, Hakeem "The Dream" Olajuwon, John Stockton, Clyde "The Glide" Drexler, John Starks, Patrick Ewing, Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan.
Dead and gone.
All we have now is thugs jumpin in the stands, and complaining about how $14 million dollars a year is not enough to feed there family, and THEN tanking the whole season. The NBA is a joke.

Excellent point.
While baseball is better than throwing shit at your friends, you could argue that all sports are greater than that.
But that does not do anything to help your case.
Baseball is a boring, skill-deprived sport.

Baseball sucks, NBA rules. I have no idea how people can watch a baseball game, it's like watching a tree grow.
Only thing that sucks in the NBA is the refs, and how my Rockets were robbed!!!

baseball is fun. it might be boring to watch on TV, but there are only a few things i would rather do on a saturday afternoon than go to the ballpark, have a hotdog and a beverage, and watch a baseball game with my Dad. Its americas pastime Rilla. It is wholesome entertainment. Hot Dogs are g00t. All reasons why baseball pwns

Thats the only reason it's still around, "its americas pastime." Not becuase it's a fun sport to watch, not becuase it's a honorable sport, a competative sport, an exhausting sport. You never have triple overtime in the playoffs where the players are so tired they can barely move like in Hockey. You never have players like Jerome Bettis who is constantly huffing on his inhilator becuase even with asthma he's giving it his all. There are no heros in baseball, there are only Jokers and Villians.

oh my bad, Curt Shilling bleeding through his socks in the ALCS, and Kurt Gibson knocking one out 3 weeks after having knee surgery arent heros.
hockey is a great game. its intense, its competitive, and it is <baseball. The fun from baseball is the tradition, the memories, and the drama. Baseball is a game where you dont have to be 6'6" and built like a truck to be successfull. it is a boys game, played by men. Sorry you missed out on your childhood rilla, but dont take that out on baseball

Well, if you play any sport on a long enough timeline, you're going to get a hero here and there. I should have said "has many fewer." Just becuase it's traditional and a childhood game does not make it better than any other sport in America.
I've gone to plenty of baseball games with friends and family and I've gone to plenty of hockey games with friends and family. You enjoy both atmospheres the same, it's probably the same for football if a bit more crowded. The sport is less entertaining to watch and it drags on. The only way a hockey game drags on is if its 5-0 and your team is losing.
It's just not a fun sport to watch.
You could have made a case for NASCAR being worse.

What the hell is wrong with you man? You just dogged on the top two spectator sports in this country... leave it to Rilla to be the unconventinal guy who has to hate everything that other people like. Jump on the bandwagon man, youll love it.

yes.
Major League baseball has 160 games per year. NFL has 16. Ya, way more people go to baseball games than football or Hockey (I am not going to mention the fact that there is no Pro hockey this year, because it breaks my heart too) and NASCAR gets out more fans than any of the other pro sports. I am not sure about the order if you include Minor League and Non-Pro teams, but I am sure the trickle down theory applys, so baseball would still pwn

Shouldn't that in itself prove that baseball is solely driven by the bottom line today? 160 games seems like a bit much. I dunno how many hockey or basketball play.
But i'd assume baseball is all about the money.

But you can't disagree that a longer season means more money.
And would not 120 games prove the same as 160?

at the 120 game mark last season the standings were different than at the 160 game mark. The Sox were like 10 games back at the 120 game mark last year

If they knew it was a 120 game season, they would probably have started to really give it there all near the 100th game, as I assume they ended up doing at the 120th to catch up those 10 games.

No skill, when was the last time you tried stepping into the batters box and hitting a 95mph fastball, or how about trying to hit one of Wakefield's knuckleballs that dances all the to the plate and before you even know what your looking at its in the catchers glove.
Football is my passion but I love baseball. You can't say that any sport is skill depreived because whether your driving a car at 200mph inches away from someone or swinging a golf club on a sunday afternoon all of that requires skills that most people could only dream about having.
You obivously have your right to dislike a sport because, to you it may be boring, but saying there are no hero's and no skill in baseball is just absurd.

I find it interesting that baseball is one of the only popular sports left that doesn't use a clock. In our society I think it's probably a good thing to have around because it ties us to a simpler past. I myself don't watch baseball until the last month or so but I go to at least 1 Dodger game per season because it's a relaxing time with friends, family and overpriced beer. So IMO, baseball is not the most fun sport to watch but I think it should still hold a place in our culture.
Oh, and I too have a cordless keyboard and mouse and believe me it is the way to go.

By skill-deprived, I meant lacking in skill. And I was also alluding to steroids. I'm not saying there are no steroids in Football, but I cant think of another sport where so many of it's current "greats" are probably using steroids.

I will agree with you that to a certain extent the steroid scandal has taken away from the game. However steroids do not give you the hand eye co-ordination to hit a baseball. Now someone who already has that ability and take steroids to break homerun records ::COUGH:barrybonds::COUGH:: is someone who deserves to be labeled a cheater, but you cannot say that he does not have any skill. It is also un-fair to label a whole sport as skill-deprived because a few guys have been caught using steroids.

And dwarfman- Football pwns Futbol.
And rilla- What people forget about steroids in baseball is the fact that they werent even banned untill 1998. That doesnt make it right, and i hate steroids as much as anybody, but they werent banned. Bud Selig is an Asshat. He has done more damage to baseball than anyone. I still contend that the best homerun hitter in baseball is Ken Griffey Jr. and he is the only one that nobody is throwing the S-word at. He did it with the sweetest swing in the history of mankind, and not by juicing up. If it werent for a series of unfortunate events in each of the last ten years, than he would be at about 1000 HR's right now. In the strike year, he was on pace to hit a legit 80, except weiner Bud Selig had to cut it short. A legit 80, wouldnt that be something.

Yes this is true, American Football on the gridiron is the best game ever.
However Soccer is probably one of the tougher sports to play due to the endurance factor. Having said that I am not a huge fan of Soccer. I have watched it before and I played as a little kid but Soccer is one of those sports I have a hard time watching now. I have actually seen quite a few commercials for the MLS but it just doesn't catch on here in the states. I don't think there is enough going on during a soccer game to keep a captive audience here in the good ol' US of A.

I am glad to see someone say this. He has been dogged ever since he became injury plagued. He was back in the day one of if not my favorite player. He was a classy guy and one hell of a ball player. "WAS" being the key word there, unfortunately we will never have the chance to find out how awesome he truly could have been.
I have heard the sword thrown at him a little, just on sports talk radio saying that maybe some of his injuries were related to steroids but for the most part it was quickly dismissed.

Dwarf, i don't recall you feeling football was that great last night!
But it's true footy is where it's at, especially international games. But of course americans don't understand the concept of internationals (World Series pfffft)

I highly doubt anything will ever pass Football in the USA. It is so far passed baseball and basketball in popularity for professional sports its rediculous. Football is definately "Americas Pasttime" now

I've got his 1989 Upper Deck rookie card. Anybody know how much it's worth?
This discussion always pisses me off. I think we each form our own attachment to different sports when we are young and then cherish those sports for the rest of our years.
I'm a big fan of baseball. A lot of people say baseball is boring, but I am bored to tears by watching people skate back and forth on ice for hours and end with a score of 0-0. And while I can appreciate the skill involved in basketball, having a final score of 150-148 is equally boring to me. The last few minutes can be good.
(American) Football seems to be the most easily enjoyed and interesting sport for most people.
Obviously, all of the sports are driven by money now (if there was ever a time they weren't). How many commercials can they really run in one Super Bowl?
