so commuting ~10 miles each way, to and from, work in a mid sized luxury sedan powered by a 4.4 litre v8 is not exactly ideal with gas prices as they are.
So I wanted a bike, and I got one from the dishwahser who sells "used" bikes. It was ok, but not exactly what I wanted. Then I remembered my friend had a road bike that he had pieced together that had a single locked gear and was completely stripped down. This means reliability and low maintenance. He lives in new york now but said I could have it if I went and grabbed it from his parents garage. So I did, and it wasnt in the best condition so Ive been working on it in the little bit of free time I have. So I had the rear hub rebuilt, a new nickle plated chain, new kevlar lined tires and I painted the frame flat white and the wheels gold
Yea for transportation that costs me nothing! but.. shhhh... dont tell my car Im cheating on her

thats right... no brakes

I think this is a great idea, for reasons of fitness and not gas prices.
Oh and nice bike by the way. I'd hit it. With my car.

Sweet.
I bought my bike for $20 and i love it. Its a 10 speed from the late 70s or early 80s and is all customized by the previous owner.
It has brakes.

benny, ya I ride to work in chicago. Im not sure if you understand the way the bike works.. The rear gear is locked. So you cant coast. If your feet are on the pedals and the bike is moving than your feet are moving. Its a direct connection. So conversely if your feet are slowing down, so is the rear wheel. With the foot harness' its pretty easy to stop in a reasonable distance by slowing your legs and at the same time pulling up and back on the harness'. There are more advanced techniques to stop these bikes, such as skidding and leaning the majority of your body over the front handle bars to lift the rear wheel and locking your legs (which is much easier when the rear wheel isnt in contact with the ground.) However, Im not quite comfortable doing either.
And yes, the bikes name is "The Death Machine." It was the name of hte bike when my friend had it and he insisted I keep the name. I like it though, seeing as its a bare bones machine and has no brakes... Yep, the names def fitting
edit: btw the handle bars are standard road bike bars but flipped upside down and sawed off so they dont hook around all the way.

very nice. My friend in Cincinnati has one and rides it around that hilly ass town. Think he's crazy.
+10 for biking to work. Wish I was only 10 miles away so I could do the same.

I dont bike the whole way there, sometimes I do on the way home though. I normally ride a few miles to the train then a few blocks from the train to work. Its a nice routine. Wake up to exercise, then have 30-45min to relax and read/listen to music, then work. If I sat at a desk all day I could see riding all the way, but Im standing and doing physical stuff all day.

I know I know... it would be nice to have it clean so I could have a place to put my car/ work on my car. But I have so little time and then when I have a free day it rains...

my bmx is set up like that, mucho fun to ride thru the traffic in the morning. If the gear is locked without a freewheel I´d replace the pedals, always good to have the shoe-on-tire-brake as ur last option

nah being able to pull up and back on the harness' is key in slowing down. Ive been riding it for a few weeks now, Ive got it down pretty solid.
