Scenario: My dad is watching something on on tv about sharks off the coast of Africa.
Dad says, "How do you catch a n****r shark?"
After knowing him for the past 23 years, I thought I knew almost word for word what he was about to say.
Dad says, "With a n****r fish."
I figured his answer to his own joke would involve fried chicken and/or watermelon and/or fat white women, but I was wrong.
So this makes me wonder: is my dad really racist, or is he just trying to make conversation the only way he knows how?

Given your avatar, if he is a racist he's got to be very disappointed in you so I doubt he's trying to make conversation

do you have black friends? if so how has he interacted with them? what would he say if you wanted to marry a black girl? i think things like that are better to judge racism than jokes.

Racism is ridiculous. I traveled a lot this summer and was exposed to a lot of blatant racism that I never thought existed in this country. To tell you the truth it disgusted me.

It might be different in America, but in the UK at least 90% of people over 40 tell racist jokes, and they don't even realise that they are racist. They're just jokes, right? My mum used to text me insanely racist jokes all the time until i told her to stop it. My dad makes wisecracks about "blacks/Poles/Muslims" a lot as well, and yet his first wife (who he had 2 kids with) was black.

I always thought my dad wasn't racist but one day when I was younger I was watching the Fresh Prince of Bel-air. It was some Christmas episode and he walked into the room and was like, "Why do you want to watch a show about how a bunch of niggers spend their Christmas?"
He's that kind of dad racist that a lot of parents are. Where he can have minority friends and get along with them fine, but then we wasn't happy when my sister brought home her black boyfriend one day. He was really nice to the guy and everything and didn't say anything behind his back, but you can tell he would trade the guy in for a white boyfriend for her in a second.

ive never been racist, never been bothered about what colour someones skin was, and neither was my mom.
then we watched 3000 people hit 1000degrees celcius in about 1 second flat.
After that date, while ive never openly called someone a racist name or discriminated against them because of the colour of their skin, i would never support anything that helped people of creed other than white.
Id be interested if you think im racist?

now i get all the OP=spoonitnow's dad posts. lol.
making a racist joke def. doesnt make someone racist, althogh it might be distasteful.
that remark is probably going to spark something like this from biondino:
wow see you are a racist. you dont even think racism exists, blah blah blah.
I got a good feminist joke:
Why did the feminist cross the street?

the only reason i have said i could be classed as a non-supporter of jewish interests (call it anti-semetic as i have before) is because i feel israel (perhaps i am incorrect to lable this the 'jewish state') has basically flaunted every law in persecuting the palestinians, something i think is wrong, no matter who the persecutor was (id think brits were wrong if they were doing it, and have done so to the irish perhaps in recent history)
Therfore i have said i do not like jewish people for one reason:
the nazis murdered millions of their kind, and now they dont allow plaestinians to live in a country of their own and build up there own lives.
This is hypocrisy to me, and made worse by the fact that the holocaust is the single most horrible act in history, and Israel (perhaps incorrectly associated by me as 'the jews') now persecute people BECAUSE of who they are,
I find this wrong

biondino thinks you are im sure. i would say it's very mild racism, because you are discriminating by not supporting anyone other than whites. however, you aren't causing any harm by having that POV, so it doesnt bother me.

Racism is big here in post apartheid South Africa. Being a black kid in a white school in the early 90's meant I had to fight for survival. It was very bad back then.
Let's also remember that there are also racist black folks, especially the criminals in SA.

Right on. When my dad sees a dark room he often refers to it as "blacker than a n****r's arse".

Sorry Miffed, you are. There were plenty of other people other than white people who were senselessly murdered in 9/11. Does the fact that 9/11 mean you would never support, for example, Japanese or Native Indian people? That makes no sense.

I'm not going to argue whether Israel should or should not exist. But I will say that the United Nations declaration to establish Israel as a state is sthe single stupidest action of international politics by the western world. ever.
Sure I feel extremely sorry for what happened in the holocaust. but the answer is not to appropriate land from the arabs, who have held it for thousands of years and give it to the jewish. I mean while we're at it why don't we revert the world back to the boundaries of 1000BC?

Get your facts straight Salsa before you post such things
between 1917-1948 the area which is now Israel was held by the british and prior for to that for a long time by the Turkish
Jewish people have lived in this area for hundrands of years and the UN split the area between the dead sea and the med sea into two countries, one for the arabs which was the major part of the country, and one for Israel which was very small, mainly in areas of Jewish settlements
The arabs did not like it and attacked the new and small country of Israel by a joined force of 7 countries, during that war Israel concquered some land which is today the countiry of Israel.
It was not 'an arab country' as you claim at least not in the last few hundrand years

damn it, spouting inaccurate arguments again.
one of these days I'll have to study the history of that piece of land.
In the initial division of land, did the israelis get jeruselem? And is there any truth in the common belief that israelites systematically tried to buy up all the land?

Here is a link from Wiki with brief cliffnotes of the UN division resolution
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_...1#The_division
Shoret story - according to UN the area of Jersulam was supposed to be placed under International control, not part of the Israeli or arab state.
After the 48 war Israel concquered the west part of jeruslam, which does not hold all the holy places (gold dome, westren wall etc...), the eastern part of Jersalem, with all the holy places ended up under Jordan control
In the 6 day war in 1967 Israel conqured the eastern part of Jerusalem and controls it to this day.

Miffed, regaridng your question about Israelis buying off all the land, there were some famous rich jews who systematically bought parts of the land in order to provide jeweish people (a lot of them refugees from europe) a place to live, among those the two most famous are the Baron Rotchild and Moshe Montifuiri.
I do not think it was an attempt of some 'secret jewish force' to buy the land to set up a country, but more along the lines of indidual initiative of some rich jews who tried to help other jews.
I am not that familiar with this issue, but that is the little I know

no you have it wrong/out of context. They think its not possible for an african american to be racist towards whites due to the extremity of recent circumstances that negatively effected them. The idea is that they dislike or even hate white people because they profited from suffering and disenfranchisement of themselves and their ancestors. However racist feelings towards african americans coming from whites are based on unscientific beliefs that people of another race are below them, born to do their bidding.
I am not saying that I agree with this opinion on racism, but it is not all that ridiculous of an idea. It is the same as chinese people harboring ill feelings towards the japanese, jewish people resenting germans and native americans hating 'the white man.' Do you consider people of these groups who have these feelings racist? If so, can you at least differentiate between their racism and a klan members racism?

I have a very systematic approach that I will share with the right candidate and I promise that I will turn you into a force of nature and show you elements of the game of poker that you never knew existed.

I once told a black guy a watermelon joke. He didn't laugh.
I then offered him a watermelon jolly rancher. He still didn't laugh.

I used to work in a computer/electronics department store and I was the only white dude in there except for 6/7ths of the management. One Friday the openly racist white sales manager bought lunch for everyone -- from KFC I shit you not -- and brought two big watermelons and had them in the break room for whoever wanted some.
This one black girl pointed to it and was like "What the hell is that?"
That's one of the single most funny moments of my life I think.

In Sweden they make a type of sweet/cake which is usually referred to as "chocolate balls" nowadays, despite it being rather ambiguous. But a lot of people over 40 would still refer to them as negerbollar, which translates as "Nigger balls".
Yet to accuse them of racism would be laughable.
Is using the "n****r" word an indication of racism?
How does one pronounce the asterices by the way?

I'm sorry to hear that, Miffed. Those are racist thoughts. You should never look at the color of the skin in order to take any decision.

I need to up my wpp. So, here goes
Quote:
Watermelon
(Citrulus lanatus)
This crisp sweet fruit is native to Africa and was cultivated in Egypt in prehistory. Although it spread quickly eastward to lands around the Mediterranean sea and to India, it was not known, apparently, by either the ancient Greeks or Romans. Ultimately watermelons were introduced to Europe by Moors during their invasion of Spain--but it never became a popular fruit.
By contrast, they reached China somewhere between the 10th and 12th century, where they were well regarded such that today China, with Turkey, is one of the leading world producers of watermelons.
Then, when watermelons made the tragic voyage to America on slave ships in the 17th century, they were welcomed with open arms--by South Americans, North American Indians, and white settlers alike. They are documented to have been cultivated in New England in 1629. Even so, I remember reading a book many years ago about Bowling Green, Kentucky, during the time of the Civil War, that talked about how a prideful farmer showed off at a community fair with watermelons he'd carefully cultivated in secret after acquiring seeds "east"--and how furious he was when his fellow farmers quickly scooped up the seeds they'd spit out to grow their own. That was over 200 years later...and they'd only just reached Kentucky?!
In any event, watermelon became associated with America's black slaves--and ultimately became a stereotype, most offensively as a wonderfully happy black boy in ragged clothes and straw hat eating a slice of watermelon. Witness Sandburg's Cornhusker poem cited on the left. It was this stereotype that Director Melvin Van Peebles exploited in his 1970 film "Watermelon Man," where a bigotted white man wakes up one morning to find himself black...and to discover all that that meant, to include running into jerks like himself. Van Peebles also composed the original music, including its signature song "Watermelon Man" that has become a standard in jazz arrangements.
Besides the juiciness of watermelon's red flesh--which remains a non-polluted water source in developing nations--its tough rind is pickled as a delicacy. And its black seeds, beloved by the Chinese as a snack after scorching off the outer coat, form the basis of Egusi soup, a national dish in Nigeria. Thus in a 2/99 African News article, Yinka Ijabiya reports rather tongue-in-cheek that Clive Burton, busy Regional Director of the British Council for West Africa, has had "quite a box of excitement" in his year on the job, including the showing of silly films, a show or two (dwarfed by the French Cultural Center), and his own personal liking of egusi soup.
|
I'm not familiar with American stereotypes either, well, perhaps none apart from the incestuous affairs of rednecks and names like Billy Bob and Billy Ray. I only read spoonitnow's post and decided to do some research.
And I actually have had the "Watermelon Man" MP3 by Mongo Santa Maria for a long time, its a very groovy tune.

no you have it wrong/out of context.
If so, can you at least differentiate between their racism and a klan members racism?
|
what the hell do "african americans" have to do with south africa? the guy referred to himself as "black." that is the correct term, don't be afraid to use it.

Watermelon man is one of my favourites to play in my Jazz Band. When we're doing performer calls practices or performances (where each band member gets to call a song in rotation) I call it lots. As well as New York, New York and Ran Kan Kan and of course the Girl from Ipanema

I think this comment is going to stir old anti semetic thread feelings....
|
the only reason i have said i could be classed as a non-supporter of jewish interests (call it anti-semetic as i have before) is because i feel israel (perhaps i am incorrect to lable this the 'jewish state') has basically flaunted every law in persecuting the palestinians, something i think is wrong, no matter who the persecutor was (id think brits were wrong if they were doing it, and have done so to the irish perhaps in recent history)
|
LOL so because I am half jewish even though I have no intrest in the political aspect of the country that my ancestors inhibit, you would hate me?
