Post subject: My computer is fucked plz help

Everytime i boot up it comes into windows loads up my destktop then bam! it pauses i cant click on anything nothing works and it bleeps at me.
On another hand, if i quickly click on any program and get it running it works fine providing i do this before it pauses.
Obviously, if i use the F8 options screen on bootup i can start using last known good settings which works fine, but i have no way of knowing how to retsor these. Ive tried to use the system restore in the start menu but that wont work it can restore.
i dont want to reset my hardrive again as i can be arsed with the pissing around.
Anyone help?!??!!??!?!

umm, start up in safe mode and then restore
Start -> Programs -> Accesories -> System Tools -> System Restore

I was talking to some IT guy today and I asked him about imaging and what exactly it did, but I got no answer. I am interested in what this does and where do you save the image too?
