Hello all,

It's about time I signed in as I have been on the site constantly for the past few days reading new posts and looking at many of the old ones in an attempt to learn this wonderful game.

After dabbling for a day or two on the Paradise Poker freeplay about six months ago, I started playing again (inspired by the current PartyPoker.com European Tournament shown on Channel 5 here).

I found I was playing very loose aggressive with the free chips with the mind that 'I have nothing to lose' which did me no good as that quickly became 'Nothing left to play with'. So I chipped in a few dollars and have spent the last few nights trying different games, the limit and no limit styles and the tournaments to see what it's all about.

My initial move to real money saw an improvement in my game, simply due to the fact it was my money and I wanted to defend it, so played a little tighter. Yet, I still find myself too aggressive. A few wins early in a tournament would see me the chip leader, and then that would make me play hands I shouldn't and see 'just one more card' to see if it's the one I need - which it rarely is. A lack of chips by the time the levels went high enough meant I was quickly reduced to nothing by the BB.

Great experience though, and I already see an improvement in my game - moreso, I think, than playing the freeplay would give me.

After reading through this site, and personal recommendations, I will be moving over to PartyPoker this weekend, maybe nipping back to Paradise every now and then.

Any suggestions as to specific types of games/tournaments I should enter to get the best experience appreciated - but I would prefer to stick to the $5 games at the moment instead of blowing all of my cash straight away during these early learning stages.

Cheers

Mxx

Hi.. welcome to FTR..

I'd sugguest you start with something that has "micro limits". Party poker has a soft/loose game but if your just trying to get your feet wet, a site with smaller limits might be a better fit for you.
My advice would be poker stars for 2 reasons.

Poker Stars has micro limts as low as .01/.02 NL and .02/.04 limit.
Poker Stars also has a better tourney format and lower rake on the $5 Sit and Go.

Hi Mike, thanks for the welcome

I'll check out Poker Stars this weekend. I notice the link to that site from this one looks like it has a referral type thing (linky link). Is it beneficial (to this site, not to myself) if I sign up using this link or any specific code?

Cheers

Murphyz -
Welcome to FTR - I'm sure this site will help your game as much as it has mine. Spend a LOT of time reading the posts here, there is a lot of knowledge in them. The good thing about this site - if someone has advice or an opinion that is BS, another member will call them on it right away and it will be exposed for the junk it is.

Yes, the site is benefitted by your clicking the link to sign up. It doesn't cost you anything, you will get your normal bonus. Might as well use the FTR link so that two people can get paid.

I would also recommend Poker Stars as a good first stop. I would recommend playing the .05/.10 limit game if you are just getting started. The .01/.02 cent games are junk, and you won't learn much there. Pacific Poker is a good stop for low limits also. Have fun.

as much as i hate to agree with mike and lhoney , i'd also recommend the tiny limits at poker stars.

- even at the micro limits a lot of PS players play "real" poker
- party can be wild (although, with 'lots of money making potential) if you're not used to it

someone said a while ago: "learn to play on poker stars, make your money on party" - i find this to be very true. i play NL on stars, and make decent money, but i don't get nearly the number of bad calls (bad calls that pay me off) that i get on party.

good cards and welcome.
i hate what i have become to escape what i hated being...

PokerStars does have less rake on their SNG's, but the competition is a lot stiffer also. I would recommend low limit ring for awhile. I'm not sure if you are playing limit or no limit - Pacific Poker has 2.50 10 man limit SNG's that are very soft. The payouts are 10,7.50,5.00 for 1,2,3. Not a lot of money in them, but a great way to get experience. I'm a big proponent of Pacific, as you may notice from some other posts.

I'm currently trying my hand at both the limit and non limit games, a lot of the time via tournaments (still at paradise until my chips run our). I am finding that I'm holding my own slightly better, just not winning the hands consistently, thus still too aggressive.

It looks like I'll be giving stars a go first, and then move around the others once I start at least getting the money back or making a little profit.

Thanks, all, for your suggestions.
