Got my son an mp3 player for Christmas this year. Anyone know of a good place to get downloads? I know there's Napster for about $9.95 a month. I've found My music inc for $0.99 a month. Im kinda leaning towards this one. Anyone have any experience with My Music Inc? Or wanna give me your views on other sites?

Thanks
Dog

i thought with monthly mp3 subscriptions you werent able to burn to cd or put on an mp3 player...

if you want to be legal, use one of the russian sites that let you dl songs for pennies. theyre legal as of right now and you own full rights to the songs.

my school offers free napster subscriptions to all students and nobody uses it because we're unable to get it to our hard drives.

yah all those monthly subscription ones you have to pay to actually 'get' the song. You can listen to the whole song (itunes only lets you preview like 30 secs of the song, and yo ucant make playlists of unbought songs) But you cannot put it on your mp3 player or burn it. Also I dont even think you can access the music if yo uarent online, so like if you had it on your laptop, unless you had access to the internet, yo ucant listen.

If you want to pay for the music, either get iTunes and bite the bullet, give him like a weekly allowance for itunes, or go to one of those russian sites.

I have been using itunes, but I think Im gonna go to one of the russian sites, that sounds nice, pennies per song.

Ditto.

Also, with iTunes, is it like $1 per song or what?

I'm getting my iPod whenever they get them in stock, so these things would be good to know.

yah $.99 a song, but I dont mind so much, when you had to buy albums in the store, you would be forced to pay for a buncha songs you didnt even want. Now you can buy the whole album, or just pick as chose. When I was 13 I was into downloading music for free, but you often ended up with half a song, a bad recording, or a song that is not what you wanted. I pay $.99 and I know EXACTLY what Im getting and I dont have to worry about getting fined hundreds of thousands of dollars for 'stealing' music. I play poker so I can be financially free, why steal things? However those russian sites do sound interesting, that might be something to look into.

yeah pizzaman listed a site that works. theres absolutely no reason to pay the RIAA inflated itunes prices.

russian sites are dirt cheap and its legal according to international law (as of right now). it might cease to be legal in the near future so just make sure that you know when that is.

boost, i hope you realize that with itunes youre giving $0.70 per song to the RIAA and the artists get a FRACTION of what itunes doesnt take for their own trouble. if you care whatsoever for artist compensation, you can see that "legitimately" paying for songs does no good. if youre doing it just to be legal then thats a different story..

I do it truthfully because it feels good to spend money, and when I do spend money I know what Im getting is quality. If it isnt, I either bought it on the cheap and have no room to complain, or I can complain and get a replacement, or a refund. And journey, this is nothing new, the artists has been getting pennies on the dollar since it was being pressed on wax. The artists make thier money on tous, the record label hypes them, gets the public listening, through selling albums and on the radio. Then its the artist who sells out shows, and thats how they make thier money. That and endoresments and stuff. However there are a lot of people who are not getting rich off the sale of albums, but they make a modest living from thier part in the industry.

Dont get me wrong, Im in no way trying to put you down for not paying for music, this is just my chocie, I dont think that chosing to get it for free is a wrong one, its just not my thing any more to get music for free. I prefer to pay for it.

I'm not sure, but I think Yahoo! (not sure if other monthlies with a set fee) have a catch. You can use the song as long as you still have the service. So, say you pay $5 a month for unlimited. Then you download 100 songs. Then you quit and sign up for something else. Those 100 songs are no longer leagal. Just a word of caution.

If you want free (not legal) music, any of those napster type programs (LimeWire is good) have searches. But, I suggest you have active virus protection on your computer especially if you use windows and media player. There are "mp3 players" that don't care if your stuff is protected or not. I think IPODs do care. So, if you want free music, don't get an IPOD.

I usually buy cds if I like 3 or more songs by an artist or if a source I trust tells me it's worth it. The thing is, I usually end up liking the songs that don't make the radio more than the ones that do. Radio plays are good and all, but they usually lack the depth of the other material from an artist since they can't be "too deep" for the masses.

Another note on "mp3s". Windows Media Audio (wma) has better sound quality and compresses to a smaller size than mp3. OGG is even better than wma, but only by a little and is less supported by all players.

dapreview.com is the best source I found online for Digital Audio Players and associated info.

bump: allofmp3 has no way to pay for songs except with a gift card. But in order to buy a gift card you have to purchase with cc or debit card. Neither of which work at the moment with allofmp3.

Anyone know of any other place thats good to download songs and cheap like allofmp3?

I missed this the first time around...
Some of you may find some use out of this.

Digital Rights Management (DRM) encoding removal.

1. Create playlist with all the song you wish to rip
2. Burn to CD in audio-CD format (AIFF)
3. Rename original DRM encrypted mp3s
4. Insert burned disk and import songs.

Naturally AIFF formatted disks will allow fewer songs, but as cheap as CDs are nowadays it only depends on how badly you wish to be able to use the songs on other media players etc... Should work with DVDs as well.

NOTE: This is NOT an actual hack. The original encoding is not tampered with so it's perfectly legal. Originally published in PCWorld March 07.
