i hate to say it, but i dont think KC or STL can support the NBA, we're just not big enough. and, with STL, we already have hockey...same season basically; therefore, competition for the corporate dollar. and, youre right about a "niche sport," but it has been successful in STL in the past, which is why it is quickly reviving. i'm not kidding, though, the marketing team/ownership for the Blues could buy any team and quickly make it the favorite sport in the town. they have done one hell of a job in less than 18 months. but, you'd have to be here...i was hoping another STL boy would jump in here to second this thought because its just not believable to anyone not living locally.
football, you guys had the longest active "going to the playoffs" streak going under Marty. something like 10 years in a row. only the Blues had a longer one. they had not missed the playoffs...ever...until last year. granted, its hockey where everyone makes the postseason, which is why, imo, Marty's streak was more impressive...2nd only to the Braves.
TLR, philly would be a nice fit for the guy. he likes to "cherry pick" his spots. ever notice that one? he only plays for winning clubs. the cards really worry me. i've never sipped the Kool-Aid. they SUCK. and its only getting worse. they need 4 new starters minimum, 2 outfielders, a 3rd baseman, SS, 2nd baseman...and a little more versatility on the bench. the way their medical staff handles injured players is a complete joke (see Mulder, Carpenter, Rolen, Mulder again, Kennedy, Edmonds, Duncan, Kinney, Izzy, Spezio, Ankiel (yrs past), etc, and thats only THIS year, and i'm sure i left some out.) when you have your "star" players seeking 2nd opinions...its bad. if i see more than 4 players return to the club, imo, they've regressed. but, believe me, they will try to resign all of them..for the hometown discount. they cant trade Encarnacion or Rolen due to salaries.
but that said, would you leave Pujols in his prime? i dont care how old he is. i know you guys over there think he's Julio Franco's little brother...meaning he's approaching 50, too, but who knows, and who cares? he's the best hitter in baseball, and will be for another 5-7 years, provided he can stay healthy...a big question right now, especially with our training staff. they are still pinch hitting with him...to try and get him 100 RBIs to preserve his "streak." that makes no sense to me given the lack of pennant race. i say shelf him and get him right for next year. he's only our FRANCHISE.
but, nah, lets get him a meaningless streak and FUCK HIM OVER for the future. we dont need the 100 Million anyway...we sold all those urinals out of the old Busch Stadium.
these owners have their heads so far up their asses, it makes me crazy. and what's worse? they have everyone else in this town drinking the Budweiser, too.
sorry to rant.
hey, did you see the story about Arod to the Cubs....WITH OWNERSHIP? thats some crazy shit, too.
