Default Messed Up News Quarantine thread

Thread's purpose is to contain all the news that might run the risk of ruining your day but still give you the option of seeing just how fucked up this world of ours can get.

Honour killings: Man guns down six daughters – The Express Tribune

Son tells father that 2 of his 6 teen-aged daughters are dating college-aged boys. Father calmly lines them up and shoots all 6 girls while mother/wife and son watch.

It kind of irritated me when it mentioned Pakistan's ranking amongst the other countries for their treatment of women. This has more to do with how fucked up in the head many men are, in general.

Mother bear kills cub and then itself

In China bears are apparently farmed for bile and it's agonizing to the bears. Momma bear breaks away from her restraints in response to her baby bear's cries. When she can't free the suffering little guy, she smothers him to death before killing herself in a headlong sprint into a wall.

I dunno about the accuracy of the story, but it's fucked up.

It's so warm outside I thought I might cool down with this oldy from earlier this year.

Massacre horrifies B.C.: Man shoots 100 sled dogs ‘execution-style’ after Olympic slowdown

Earlier this year, a man who works for a dogsledding company was charged with making the business more profitable after a post-olympics boon never materialized. Wink, wink, nudge, nudge, the man is tasked with slitting the throats of or shooting 100 dogs. The process is haphazard, leading to panicked dogs, non-fatal wounds, dogs with half-faces and dangling eyes sprinting around, and a mass grave filled with dying dogs.

Well based on what Canada does in the arctic to baby seals every year totally legally, I don't see how these people can be charged in a court of law - it would be utter hypocrisy.

    The day ruiner.

Express.co.uk - Home of the Daily and Sunday Express | World News :: Bear’s eating me, girl told mum in call

Step-father and step-daughter were fetching a left-behind fishing rod along a stream in Russia when they were attacked by a hungry mother bear with 3 cubs. The father was overpowered and died from a snapped neck. The step-daughter who witnessed the attack made a break for it but was run down by the mother bear. In her shock, she manages to call her mother on 3 separate occasions to detail her own death. "She screamed: “Mum, the bear is eating me! Mum, it’s such agony. Mum, help!’”"

"In a second call, a weak Olga gasped: “Mum, the bears are back. She came back and brought her three babies. They’re... eating me”."

"With the bears having apparently left her to die, she said: “Mum, it’s not hurting anymore. I don’t feel the pain. Forgive me for everything, I love you so much.”"

    Courthouse News Service

A 14-year-old boy got into a fight at a school bus stop and the school district's police officer responded by shooting him to death, the boy's mother says. She says the cop had been reprimanded 16 times in the previous 4 years, suspended without pay 5 times, and "recommended for termination for insubordination," but the school kept him on the force "without remedial training."

we had about a dozen security guards at my high school, and there were like three or four cops that were in the youth unit or whatever. They would do the D.A.R.E. stuff at middle schools and I would see the occasionally in high school. The security guards were not armed, the cops obviously were.

Sorry to derail the thread, but for those of you that had cops or security guards at your schools, how big were the towns you grew up in?

I went to a school that wiki says is 94% white. I think my class size was ~300 people? Extrapolate from that the size of the town, but I think we were just standard fare white suburbia. Lots of neighborhoods and generally nothing to do.

If we could track it, I think we would find that a very surprising percentage of human progeny is a product of rape.

Wait is that their baby product of rape estimate? That would be pretty high if directly from rape

What matters more is the percentage of rapists or potential rapists who have children. That number I bet is extremely high. The potential part would be impossible to calculate, but it's an important point given the nurture aspect of genetic expression

All I'm saying is people vastly underestimate how much rape there is in the world, and what it really means. It means that we all pretty much have rapists in our genes

I find it very disturbing as well, but I think perhaps it can be explained by Chinese labor conditions. In some factories the conditions are so bad that they get fired by simply speaking. I wouldn't be surprised if the people who ran her over would have lost their $5/day jobs/living space/etc if they had stopped. Obviously I don't know the scenario, but that kind of thing is plausible and in some ways standard in areas of China

I've heard it's because of the litigious atmosphere in China where helpers have been saddled with big damages fines even if it's known they had no part in the accident. The Chinese people have a overwhelming attitude of not wanting to stir up any trouble for themselves so they pretend to be wholly unaware of what's going on.

It's probably something like that. Scenario just defies belief so much that there's gotta be a very strong self-preservation motivation for people just walking past

As a complete thread derail, have been in 3 serious relationships in my life (including present wife) and all 3 were raped previous to my knowing them... it is hugely prevalent in my opinion.

It's just. In the past people lived in their village, most for their whole life, and didn't hear or care too much about outside. But if you put all the billions of people TOGETHER, which is what global media does, and report on the worst, then this is what you get.

Did you ever outright refuse cases because of your thoughts on the individual and the actions they took? Like if you felt these guards actually did what they are charged with, would you still defend them to the best of your ability, or what? And if so, does it not make you kinda feel shitty? Knowing you are trying to keep people that deserve to be behind bars out? Just never could wrap my head around being a defense lawyer and working for people you felt (or knew) were guilty.

My prior job was working for the state in civil actions - that means I was defending the state from people who were suing it or its employees for money damages. So no, I couldn't refuse to take cases. But even if I could have, I wouldn't have.

Most of defense law isn't about getting "guilty" people off scottfree. It's much more about defending your client's rights and ensuring that our system of justice works well for everyone. In a criminal case that means that you make sure that the state attorney can prove their case beyond a reasonable doubt. If they can, then the "guilty" person is rarely going to get off. If the state can't prove that burden then that person should not be criminally punished.

Even in this case, it is pretty obvious that both sides of the story aren't being portrayed. The guy who got pepper sprayed was very likely going absolutely ape-shit. Controlling someone who is going absolutely ape-shit is not a real easy job. My job as a defense lawyer, if there was a viable defense, would be to make sure that the jury got to understand the whole story and not just the side saying "look they killed an innocent person!"

I rarely, if ever, would get strapped down, gagged, and pepper sprayed unless I went absolutely ape-shit.

I get that these guards very likely went too far. I also get that these guards very likely were dealing with a guy who was spazzing out, trying to kick, hit, bite, claw, pull hair, spit and possibly trying to throw feces or urine at them as well. Shit like this isn't black or white, it is almost always a very murky grey.

One of my faults according to my wife is that I am way too quick to try and look at every situation from both sides. Then again it's also why I rarely, if ever, get pms.

I'm pretty sure that conviction, similar to faith, is taught as a virtue in all the major world religions I can think of, and at the very least it is certainly the case for the Abrahamic ones.

I was discussing something similar with my girlfriend the other day, about how differently we react for example to the same newspaper article. If it's about a heinous crime of some sort, her first reaction is empathising with the victims and their family whereas my I start immediately trying to work out in my head what kind of social circumstances lead people to perpetrate such crimes - basically analyzing the situation rather than somehow feeling strongly one way or another. Which usually leads to her getting frustrated after not being able to get me to express how I feel about shit, as opposed to what I think.
  62. #62
I'm the same. I usually get heat about it when the wife is complaining about something and I can't keep my mouth shut about seeing the other side of the issue when I should clearly "be on her side"

People in general have very peculiar ideas about vices and virtues. One of my favorites is having principles. "This is how I'm going to feel about this issue no matter the circumstances, so I don't have to do any thinking." Great.

ha, the one word response, "Great." is so perfect here. It's like a religious discussion that ends up with a person backing into "well, you see, for me it's a matter of faith." They have just shown that they are incapable of carrying on a rational debate. Therefore, "Great."

+1 This is something rational people (aka men) do.

Telling the woman anything at all positive about the other side makes her think you are against her 100%. Even if it's something small like "have you considered that they thought...".
Some days it feels like I've been standing forever, waiting for the bank teller to return so I can cash in all these Sklansky Bucks.

Let's not be sexist here. What you're describing only applies to a distinct subcategory of women, namely the crazy bitches. They're no more than 80% of all women, tops.
Our brains have just one scale, and we resize our experiences to fit.

As much as i adore sexism, the gender differences being described have more to do with a certain emotional aspect of discourse that women have in a different way than men. Even the most closed-minded woman will open up her logic if you make her feel like you understand and respect her opinion. This is the same with men but when we communicate with each other, we naturally exude those implications without thinking about it

SOPA/PIPA game is just about playing it out, apparently. While SOPA and PIPA die, the next one up simply can not fail. H.R. 1981: Protecting Children From Internet Pornographers Act of 2011 (GovTrack.us)

The Protect Children from Internet Pornographers Act.

Put all the SOPA you want in there, no one is going to try and out maneuver a bill to protect the children from child pornographers.

I guess this really isn't the right thread for SOPA/PIPA stuff, I just saw bigred's post.

Something is deeply flawed with our government, when simply giving a proposed law an inflammatory name will get it to pass, no matter what is in the wording of the actual law. It seems that we live in the era of the Patriot Act.

They could pass anything if they called it "The Apple Pie Act"
