Default looking to get a used car...

    cliffnotes below.

My lease is up in less than two months, and I just dont have the money to sign another lease. Even if I did, I just am not sure its worth it since I go to a small commuter school anyways. My mom has asked how the search for apartments has gone, and I just tell her I dont have the money, so Im probably moving back home. She has said that she will help me out as she just got a raise, but honestly Id rather just live at home for now. Even with her paying my rent, I would feel guilty and still worry about expenses. Living at home I can focus on school better, only shitty part is the commute.

So this is where the car comes in. Since she was offering pretty much to pay for an apartment I asked her what she thought about me living at home and getting a car for about the same value as a years worth of rent. She seemed fine with it. I hate to leach off my mom, but she did encourage me to go to school saying "just go, dont worry about the money, youll pay it back when you graduate and Ill help you in the mean time." So I guess its not that big of a deal, and most other kids my age have been and will be leaching off their parents for quite some time. On top of all of this, both my brother and sister got several cars bought for them over the years by my grandma or my mom, I had zero. I bought all of my own cars, and generally supported myself since I got my first job. So anyways, 1 years worth of rent would probably be 5-7k. So thats my price range.

    cliffnotes:

    price range 5-7k

    Some preferences:

    awd or rwd

    manual

some sort of heritage or luxury

Two cars I was looking at:

    1999-2001 suburu impreza 2.5rs

    1996-2000 audi a4 2.8 quattro

seems I can find these with around 100k miles on them, which isnt bad for a 7-11 year old car.

I was in the same boat as you a year ago. I really wanted to get something that looked nice, but when I looked at what was available in my price range (about the same as yours) and thought about the future repair costs on an Audi or Volvo I just said fuck it and bought a 99 Camry with 115K on it for 5K. I've already spent another 1K on repairs, and you should expect to do the same if you buy it privately, but you probably know that already.

I have a 96 Legacy and I like it alot. I paid 3500 for it and it's had ~90k miles. It doesn't have much in the way of balls but as long as you aren't racing anyone that doesn't matter. Definitely a thumbs up so far. A nice added bonus is that it do work in the snow, and I know how brutal Chicago can get.

If you are going to go with something that has that many miles on it you should REALLY focus on models that have good engines in them (such as Acura, Toyota, Honda, etc.).

well 5-7k if you have roomates or live in a shithole. More like 10 if you live on your own in a decent place.

Yah, I am leaning towards the impreza 2.5rs, the audi is nice, but repair costs are high, and Ive heard some generally bad things about audis.

Yup. I had a 1988 Toyota Corolla back in the day, it ran forever even though I drove the crap out of it.

I know it's not what you're looking for but you can get a 3-4 year old saturn with <50k miles for that much. If you can do your own work you could afford a nicer older car, if you can't you might want to consider it.

I almost bought an audi A4 in the year range you were looking and after all the research I did on general reliability and how much you have to fix random crap, i decided against it. I wanted a car that wasnt gonna break or I didnt have to pay for if it did.

I got a 2005 kia rio manual about exactly a year ago now for 4850 and it still had like 3 years and 7 months on its bumper to bumper warranty or 46,000 more miles, whichever came first. Only had 14k miles on it at the time. Its obviously not considered classy or gonna turn heads or anything but for 4850 im happy with it. FWD drive though. I got it from a private party too who must have needed the cash or something. It probably would have been 7k on a car lot.

Toyotas are tanks. My '97 camry has over 130k miles on it and still runs better than my parents newer cars.

I apprecaite all the advice, but I listed my preferences for a reason. I will never own a fwd car again, I love cars, I love driving, fwd takes a lot of the fun out of driving. Also winter is coming so awd is ideal. I know what you guys are saying about reliability and all, but there are affordable cars that arent plain old fwd econo boxes.

RWD + winter = fuck that. I live in NS and we know a thing or two about winters.

Subaru's are nice, but they can get expensive very quickly to maintain (my manager has a 99 Forester and my neighbour used to sell them).

Audi is made by VW and VW's are a maintenance nightmare. Stay away.

You're talking about needing a commuter car, but then turning around and saying you want flash or style. So, which is it? Buy something reliable. Even if it means FWD, so be it.

I own a Civic and couldn't be more pleased. I've also owned an Accord and was very happy with that. My next car will likely be a Toyota.

Yeah RWD and snow = not good. I had an old 86 Mustang and it used to pivot like a tank in the snow at times. But just my opinion.

It sounds like you have already made up your mind and are just looking for approval of your choices. Take it from someone who has been an auto tech for 30+ years. If you buy a Subaru or Audi with 100K+ miles, you will need deep pockets. The Toyota Camrys and Corollas will hold up to well over 200K are are much easier on your wallet when repairs are needed.
As stated previously, stay away from RWD in the winter.

Good luck with your choice and hopefully the Audi or Subaru you buy will not give you too many headaches.

I agree I did kind of make up my mind already. Well not when I initially posted, but I made up my mind long ago that I would never own a fwd car again. I just dont think you all understand. I need a car to commute, yes, but a car bought to commute and a fun car are not mutually exclusive. Also all this "rwd in the winter = bad" talk is just silly. Learn to drive.

Its the same as people who say going 100mph on the highway is dangerous. Dangerous relative to what? Whos driving? What is thier skill level? Along those lines, Im pretty confident I can do better on a road coarse in winter conditions driving a rwd platform that anyone on the forum could do driving a fwd car.

By the way, Ive found 2 rs2.5's with <75kmi within 200 miles of me. They are a little bit more than what I set out to spend, but Ive really liked this car for a long time. Both the cars are unmodded and from what I can tell are very well maintained. Hopefully I can pick one up next weekend. Ill post pictures if everything works out

both cars sold extremely fast. They were both very rare examples of a very rare car. Relatively low miles, leather, unmolested/unmodded. Gah.. Im pretty depressed.

    Hey,
I think a good idea is to go to Fairfield, IA and stay with Max for a bit and look for a car there. Shit is going to be 10 times cheaper, and in Washington, IA you'll see some great used cars for a great price.

    idk just a thought.
