Go man Go! Quitting smoking is next on my list. No way I was going to try it while I was just a few months sober, lol. I know how hard it is. Good luck.

good luck lefou!
consequently, i also decided to quit smoking recently.
are you doing this "cold turkey"?
i decided the best way for me to go about this was to just have 1-2 less ciggarettes a day over the next few weeks.
im down to about about 8/day now, from 12-15 a day last week. everything is on schedule, and i want to be completely done before christams.

That approach hasn't worked for anyone I know, Bode. But good luck. Y, this is cold-turkey for me.
The important psychological hump to get over is to stop thinking of cigarettes as a good thing that you're *not *allowed to have. I'm an adult and am perfectly free to smoke but choose not to because it's not good.

LeFou, great approach, GL.
Bode, Cobre, or anyone who is ready should read Allen Carr - The Easy Way to Stop Smoking.

I believe I read in a psychology textbook that girls who smoke are by far (and I think its like 300xish) more promiscuous than girls who do not.
Just a good thing to know..

I quit over the summer, I made a thread about it, you should look it up, maybe itw ould help some.
What you said about treating it as a bad thing instead of a good thing that you can no longer have is spot on. I had to start off pretty extreme. If I saw people smoking, sometimes I would wanna go over and have a smoke with them. When this iwould happen I would make myself see them as stupid people that are ruining thier lives. After a week or so of this when I would see people smokingI would be kind of disgusted. Now I barely get any urge to smoke, and now I dont have to look at people this way. Now Im pretty indifferent.

thanks, boots. that helps.
Also helps: Central Market opened the day I quit (that was planned, btw). For you non-texans, Central Market is where cooks go after they die, if they were good. Just walking up and down the aisles, scoping the selection, makes you feel like living healthy.
Alas, they no longer stock the ostrich burgers...

What happens to your body after your last cigarette:
* In 20 minutes your blood pressure will drop back down to normal.
* In 8 hours the carbon monoxide (a toxic gas) levels in your blood stream will drop by half, and oxygen levels will return to normal.
* In 48 hours your chance of having a heart attack will have decreased. All nicotine will have left your body. Your sense of taste and smell will return to a normal level.
* In 72 hours your bronchial tubes will relax, and your energy levels will increase.
* In 2 weeks your circulation will increase, and it will continue to improve for the next 10 weeks.
* In three to nine months coughs, wheezing and breathing problems will dissipate as your lung capacity improves by 10%.
* In 1 year your risk of having a heart attack will have dropped by half.
* In 5 years your risk of having a stroke returns to that of a non-smoker.
* In 10 years your risk of lung cancer will have returned to that of a non-smoker.
* In 15 years your risk of heart attack will have returned to that of a non-smoker.

I've been quitting on and off since Spring, and was in the middle of a 2-day break when I spotted this and decided to take it as motivation to go for the gusto. Not counting hours, but have spent cigarette money on other things to enjoy the benefits.
The hardest part for most - the first few days/week - is actually cake for me. Mainly I just associate smoking with the most disgusting things I can imagine whenever anything like an urge strikes -
eating the contents of a dirty ashtray,
opening the top of a dumpster and inhaling the wretched fumes,
licking the dirty toejam of the most disgusting woman i've ever seen
- are just some of the associations to make it totally unappealing.
Now it's just a matter of not giving in a month later when the defenses are down and it looks like it's totally beaten.
