Brag: I finished my PhD Dissertation on Saturday.
Beat: After killing myself writing for 12+ hours per day for the last 2 months, I can't turn into a complete degenerate because my 2nd kid is due to be born on Monday!
Variance: In 5 weeks the baby comes, I defend my thesis, I go to the CWS, and finish revisions, drive family to Maine to start my new job.

Congratulations (on the Ph.D and the baby). This is pretty much one huge brag after another. Moving to Maine is a pretty big beat though, I hope you're only going to be there for a couple of years as a postdoc.

Yep, two-year postdoc... I mention moving to Maine and everyone's eyes seem to light up. Everyone has this preconceived notion that Maine is "beautiful"... and I think it is for about 3 months out of the year, but I'm also pretty certain winter doesn't ever seem to end...
Having a 2nd kid isn't really a beat.. but after finishing up I was hoping to drink beer and play poker for about 2 straight weeks. With the baby coming it's go go go on the eleventy billion things that need to get done before we move.

Maybe we'll look into getting one.. I definitely think I'm going to have to take up either XC Skiing or at least snow shoeing from everything I've heard.
We are moving to Orono, ME (near Bangor), as I got a job at the University of Maine which from what I can tell is known for two things: 1) a REALLY good hockey team (many Frozen Four appearances (?)) and Stephen King.

Kids are a beat. I'm young enough to remember being a kid and we are nasty little buggers.

Smithers, use the amnesia ray.
You mean the revolver, sir?
Precisely.
