Default Jumping Rope is now a sport in NYC

yeah, it sucks to give kids an extracurricular activity that allows them to compete against other students, be apart of a team, have something they're dedicated to, keep them off of the streets, keep them motivated in school (to jump I'm sure you have to make grades), etc, etc, etc...I could go on for a while about the benefits of a "fringe" sport being introduced to a high school.

ohh wait it's not just about a new sport

I can see the Cinderella story now

A hardcore gangster from the streets decides to give up his life of crime to win the world series of rope jumping

Then he loses his jump-rope bankroll to teddy kgb when his 9.9 9.9 9.8 loses to teddy's 9.9 9.9 9.9 and he starts driving a truck for a living

Then his girlfriend leaves him for jumping rope with his friend worm who just got out of prison

    Etc.

kinda silly to think that dont you think? youre representing a very severe misunderstanding of what olympics events are about.

olympic events are about perfection of a very specific and narrow event which is dominantly reliant on whole-body athleticism. these events are as refined as it gets, and they're supposed to be.

something that most people do not realize is that when it comes to athleticism, the more refined one is in one area, the more their capacity is deleted in other areas, generally speaking. for example, the better you get at sprinting 100 meters the worse you get at jogging 2 miles. the energy systems and muscle types and such used by the body in those endeavors can almost be considered opposites, and beyond a certain point of general physical preparedness, getting better at one will delete from the other since the body is working with limited capacity and resources and such. its like how the fastest car can never be the most powerful or the longest lasting.

so this is what olympics are. the most refined and simplest athletic events reasonable. take somebody like ben johnson (probably the fastest sprinter of all time) and put him into the nfl and he'll get crushed. but how can he get crushed because he's so fast, no doubt faster than anybody else in the nfl? the reason is because the speed he has that surpasses that found in the nfl is not a brute strength one, but a sport-specific refined one. basically he knows how to run a straight line better than anybody in the nfl. this is because of the minute details addressed by him and his coach. all those details are for teh specific reason of running as fast as possible. this and due to the olympic events being 'simple' are why they're actually amazingly athletic.

in a game like nfl, where you gotta do a ton of different shit, you get real good at all those things, but do not ever perfect any one. but in an olympic event you dont do any other thing than that one itty bitty thing youre perfecting. if youve ever watched olympic lifting, where they do the snatch and clean n jerk, you probably think its just about the strongest guy. this is both true and not true. its misleading to think so. those lifts are affected by technical skill. even though the large majority of progress in those lifts are affected by getting stronger, once we've peaked our strength (which all olympic lifters have) then it becomes an issue of which one has the most technical proficiency over performing the lift. as we know this type of thing cannot even be mastered by the greatest in a lifetime. even though it may look like its a competition over who's the most juiced up meathead, its not. this is because the competition all gets the same amount and kinds of steroids, and have the same genes. if that wasnt the case then some neanderthal could clumsily snatch 500 kilos and the sport would be entirely different. as it is now it boils down to training. besides, they're all juiced, just like every athlete in almost every sport and almost every actor in hollywood who ever has a shirtless scene.

trampoline meets the requirements for being an olympic sport. i may not like watching it, but its still all right.
