The other thread is for bashing soccer and possibly other sports, but I gotta say the Rich Nash goal abooborilla posted has gotta be one of the best goals I've seen in any sport. Post your nominees for goals, scores, or things like sickest tackles or catches or sequence of movement or whatever

Sorry to go on a pet peeve rant here, but this was not the injury that ended Haaland's career! He came back from it, and then fucked up his other leg, and he retired because of that.

Fairplay to Keano though... he had it coming.

Been posted before and I'm probably biased since I was in the crowd and the energy in there probably made it seem more exciting than it may have been for an outside viewer.

And obv the Crosby goal in the Olympics that the americans are tired of and plenty of Gretzky and Lemieux moments that are shit poor quality video and not worth posting. Sorry for all the hockey but it's the only sport I watch.

I genuniely only just discovered this the other week, apparently each team has some form of thug who has the sole job of protrecting the other players on his team from the other teams thug. And typically these thugs will arrange fights with each other but sometimes just kick off at any given moment.

Now whilst I do see some entertainment value in this, I can't help thinking, if the sport is good, why do you need to have fights in it? Couldn't you just remove the thugs? Surely there are some old people living longer and draining public services that would otherwise have been mugged & died shortly after from shock if said thug didn't have a job.

This is a debate that has been going on forever, whether fighting should be allowed or not.

I personally think it is necessary. Hockey's a very physical game that's emotionally charged and there needs to be a release of sorts. Otherwise, you get more cheap shots making their way into the game which can be very dangerous with guys moving around that fast inside a box with sticks in their hands. Think of it how (if you've ever gotten into a fight) when you fight someone when the fight ends, it's basically over. The angry energy is gone and there's less aggression around. People feel things have been settled for the most part.

Then there's also the psychological role it actually does play in the game. Intimidation and momentum are huge factors in the game and few things controls those more than having someone on your team lay a great hit (hard to do) or beat the shit out of someone.

The downside of course is these fighters put themselves in a lot of danger. You kind of made a remark, I assume half joking, that they're just thugs that would otherwise be robbing old ladies. But these are very strong guys who have put a lot of training into how to win a hockey fight. If they get a clean shot on one another in a fight, best case scenario for the opponent it's simply lights out. There have been a few cases where a fighter has gotten very seriously, one even died a few years ago and that fired this whole debate up again.

I personally think it was better before there were enforcers and guys would just fight their own fights. Now the way the whole scene works is someone on team A gets smashed by a guy on team B. Team A responds by sending their goon out next shift to get retribution, team B must protect their guy by sending out their own goon to face team A's guy. It was better when team A guy would pick himself up and just fight team B guy. That's why Jarome Iginla is one of my favorite players in the game. He's the best player on Calgary's team but he will fight his own fights and not back down from anyone out there despite the fact that he's not the hugest guy on the ice.

Turkey's performance in the 2002 World Cup (unbelievable nail biting games during the whole "playoffs", and Rüştü Reçber rising up from mediocre GK to hero)
Italy's performance in the 2006 World Cup (every game beaten 1-0, with every single game a different scorer, with the title probably going singlehandedly to Gianluigi Buffon for maintaining a tremendous clean slate during the whole tournament)
My dream... is to fly... over the rainbow... so high...
