I'd like to see statistical proof that this seasons version of the flu is worse than last.

They said on the news last night that the number of deaths outside of Mejico is considerably lower and the symptoms are a lot milder in confirmed cases. Maybe the Mejicans are just drama llamas, dying all over the place like that.

swine flu is the new bird flu, which was the new sars, which was the new......... get my point? you guys are retarded if you sit here and debate how evolution>religion and then start going OMGWURLDENDDZZZZZ just because a flu virus mutated/evolved. people die from the NORMAL everyday variety flu, and i'd say it's safe to say more than 150 do every year. don't feel like looking for numbers, besides i'm sure wuf will make an appearance shortly. quite letting news agencies control your fear level

From what I can tell this is just a normal fucking flu with a whole bunch of media hype attached. Since when do we panic about the flu? When we attach the word "bird" or "swine" to it

There was a 1940's swine flu that came at us in 3 waves. Wave one made a bunch of people sick, it mutated and went back to the pigs where it mutated again.
wave 2 had a kill rate that was on par with some of our most lethal diseases ever known, luckily it was so lethal, and so quick that it didn't have time to spread and get around before people realized someone was sick. It was too efficient to wipe us out.
Wave # 3 was less deadly for some reason but had a longer incubation time, and way more infectious. The problem was that it was attacking an already weakened population.
We flat out got our butts kicked by the 2nd to last swine flu outbreak the US had.
The last swine flu we had before this one caused a national emergency, but it just made a few people sorta sick for a while. (1970's)

I wasn't gonna post anything but omg numbers you want huh?
From memory, as of last night, 40 something confirmed cases in approximately 5 US states, only 1 required hospitalization, 100% have recovered, approximately 50 million doses of tamiflu in US reserves and it has been shown to positively affect this flu, approx 150 deaths in Mexico, a few cases found in other places like Canada and Europe, nearly all cases have been from people who recently visited Mexico, at least one but possibly only one group of cases where contamination has been domestic
The reality is that the stronger the preventative response the less likely it becomes a full blown pandemic. At this point there are only three problems 1) it could spread, but pretty much all of the response has been focused on keeping that from happening. 2) it could mutate, but it hasn't, and 3) we don't know how fatal it is exactly because we don't know what percentage of Mexico has it. If only 200 Mexicans have gotten it then the kill rate is super high and it's a super scary flu, but if 200k have gotten it then its super weak.
It's been shown to not be fatal under modern medication, but it is still a big problem if it gets across borders into poor countries
Cliff notes: Not a mega virus and not something to be worried about if you live in developed nation

A couple of things to note gentlemen:-
1) It's not a new bird flu. The whole bird flu scare was the worry that it'd become transmissible between humans, rather than just birds -> humans. Swine flu has already made that mutation.
2) Cytokine storms are a possibility with this, keep an eye out for that term emerging and adjust accordingly.
3) As the incubation period is 3-4 days, it may be more widespread than we think.
As a sidenote, I'm confused as to why it's only killing people in Mexico, especially if it kills through cytokine storms - it's not as if GDP kills viruses

Aaaah, yes
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1918_flu_pandemic
anywhere between 25 to 100 mizzles of people dead and gone due to this
that said, the fear in the current situation is probably the fear of the unknown, which as we already know is fairly high in the population as a whole.

All businesses and non-essential government offices in Mexico are being ordered to close from May 1-5. All schools are already closed. Closed on Cinco de Mayo, doesn't that show how big of a deal this is?
Just today, Texas shut down all athletics and after school activities in the entire state until May 11.
I think shit's going to hit the fan here in the United States within the next 7-10 days, if not sooner. I hope I'm wrong.

Depends on what you mean by shit hitting fan.
If the virus does not mutate, with current knowledge, the worse case scenario is like nationwide shutdown and 2%ish deaths of those infected. We have a ton of tamiflu and it helps. The young with more robust immune systems are more affected.
First death reported today in Texas, two year old child. It has been expected that there will be several US deaths before it's over though.
Shutdown will be very bad for the economy, though, but I reiterate that this looks like it will not be omgawful unless it mutates, people will die though, unfortunately

Yeah, I'm not saying that this is going to be a global killer or anything like that, bud I'd say shutting down the economy for a few days/weeks would be shit hitting the fan (if it gets that far). Hopefully it doesn't get to that point or go beyond it.
There has been nothing mentioned about shutting down schools that I've read (EDIT -- about 100 schools around the country have been closed), but the simple fact that they've shut down all sports in the state of Texas (and after-school activities) would lead me to believe that we might be at the tip of the iceberg. Again, the iceberg may not be that big, but things could get a little hairy over the next few weeks.
It'll be interesting.
Also, as someone that goes out of the way to read non mainstream media stuff and a bit of a "conspiracy theory" buff (I hate that term, but can't think of anything better), I'm eating this story up.

Conspiracy theories, huh?
Glenn Beck thinks the swine flue outbreak is an Obama/Democrat conspiracy, and Michael Savage thinks it's an al Qaeda attack

Earlier this year we had an outbreak of norovirus at my school, they gave us all copious amounts of hand sanitizer. I remember thinking what if we used so much hand sanitizer that we caused a bacteria or virus resistant to it to be selected for.

My 2 y.o. son just took a huge poop in his pants.. I'm not really sure what death from swine flu smells like, but I'd gladly wrap my arms around it if it means I never again have to smell the living hell that is emitted from that insane little bastard.

Awesome. It's going to keep spreading, and lucky for me I'm right along the I-35 corridor that connects Mexico/Dallas/Kansas City/etc, and we have a higher than average Mexican population, so there's a good chance this could impact me before too long.
The mainstream media, for the time being, is under-reporting this issue. I've read in some places that we should already be at "Level 6" as far as pandemics go, and that it's 10-25 times worse than what's being reported. I'm not saying the sky is falling or anything, but this is going to be a bigger story in the following days and weeks. It's probably a *good* thing that it's being under-reported (if that's the case), as a widespread panic could ensue and that wouldn't be good.
Just a side note, the Kentucky Derby could make this an even bigger issue, from what I've read and/or been told. Lots of the horses are brought up from Mexico (including trainers/handlers/jockeys/etc). Lots of people will be going to the race via planes. It could be a time bomb waiting to happen, I guess we'll find out later next week. It'll be interesting if the economy, schools, and non-essential government offices will have to be shut down because of this...
P.S. Kingnat wins at teh funny.
