I like or have liked just about every genre and style of games at one point or another, and I've gone from console to PC and back a dozen times probably, so I'm not really too picky (other than it can't be offline only). I'm leaning toward some kind of RPG I can play on my laptop but whatever, I'm open to any suggestions.
Some possible options...
1. FFXI - Actually, I just (re)bought this and the expansion packs a few days ago. I absolute love this game. Unfortunately, this game requires way, way, way too much time to effectively play. For those that have never played it that say simply don't play so much.... it's not that easy. Everything worthwhile in the game (including leveling up) requires partying, which while fun, can often take hours just to get a party, an hour of travel time, followed by stupid long hours of grinding. No thanks. Why I love this game I don't know, maybe the challenge, maybe I just like getting some sort of sick, twisted revenge on those stupid gobs.
2. WoW - I used to play this too, not as much as FFXI though. I dunno, fun, and if it came out now I'd probably play it. Everything was just too easy though and I didn't really meet anyone in this game because you can basically do everything yourself easily. I don't like the fact that the game basically starts at the level cap.
3. Diablo 2 - I don't know, but I've never played this game. I'm thinking of picking it up today. I played a little diablo 1 offline a long time ago and had fun with that. I don't know if it's worth it though.. I don't know anything about this game and it's quite old.
4. Starcraft 2 - Oh wait, it's not out yet. Goddamn.
5. Halo 3 - I really should play this game every once in a while.
6. Madden '09 - I'll probably play this for a few weeks when it comes out, learn all the shotgun and big sets in the run 'n gun playbook, lab up some sick heat from an unrealistic defensive set, then quit because it's the same as every other madden.
7. Lots of other possibilities, still kinda leaning toward an RPG type game of some sort.

Earthbound is so awesome.
I've been playing DW3 lately too. So many times as a kid I rented it and got about 1/2-2/3 of the way through the game, but never finished it. Currently I am further than I have ever gotten, and I am trying not to consult the FAQs and maps online at all :P

Ever played DW1? Remember how fucking long and 'level up' it was? My brother has a modded Xbox and I vowed to beat the game in one night (thanks to pressing the analog button which fast forwards play). I beat it prolly within 12 hrs.
Earthbound... OMFG do I have a short story for you on that little fucker...
First of all, one year for xmas, my brother and I got a bunch of sNES games. 5 actually, three of them included: Chrono Trigger, FFIII, and Earthbound. Best xmas ever.
So I beat FFIII in 50hrs and move onto Earthbound. Remember the final stage up in space? Well, I decided to save the game the moment I arrive on the moon. Guess what? I can't beat the final boss. I figured it was because I wasn't lvd up enough. The shitty thing is: I can't leave from my saved spot, I can't go anywhere to lvl up! So I shut the game off and never finish it. I must have spent 20+hrs on it then gave up 99% into the game. Was there a special attack I don't know about? holy fuck I'm pissed off.

Knight Online - Pretty decent MMORPG. It's free so it won't hurt to give it a quick lookover to see if you like or not. It gets a little boring around lvl 30 or so, but who knows maybe it's just me.
Asheron's Call - Rather old MMORPG, so it is probably not worth it now, but was an amazing game back in the day (I played from '99 - '04ish).
DAOC [Dark Age of Camelot] - Never played, but I know most of the Asheron's Call players quit and went to this game, so who knows.
ShadowBane - Was another good game back then. Haven't kept track of whether it is still going or what now.
WoW - ldo
Diablo III - If you can wait till it drops. Not sure when that is though.
RuneScape - lol.
Age of Conan - Haven't looked at it much but hear it is pretty much the shit. So might be worth looking around for some reviews etc.
Guild Wars - Won game of the year a few years back I believe. It's not pay to play, so once you buy the game (and expansions I guess) you don't have to pay a monthly fee. Another possible game imo.
Gunz - I've read that this is a great game. Although I have never played it once again. I do believe it's free so worth another look I believe.
Hero - I kept track of this game when it was still in development. I believe it is finished now; however, I haven't checked up on how it turned out yet. Just another one to throw out there.
Well that's all I got for now. Hopefully it helps a little. I may be looking for a game soon as well. I'm thinking Age of Conan may be my game of choice in the near future.

Yeah DW1 was a brutal grind. At least in DW3 and 4 you gain levels fast enough by wandering around from quest to quest that you don't have to spend much time just looking for random encounters.
Earthbound I don't recall the final boss at all actually. That sucks that you couldnt finish it though

You don't want an RPG. Those take over your life to the point where you raise your hand to cast a fireball spell and then realize you're at work.
This is a couple of years old but is still the best FPS I've ever played (and I played Half Life 2) - Far Cry
I second the "any Civilization" too. I liked Civ3 the best (simpler but more action, bigger empires), but Civ4 is a quality game too (cool details but more complex and managing a huge empire is much more difficult than anyone venturing out of his basement should attempt).

Played it today. Its an identical game to NCAA09 if you've picked that up. Same controls. Same engine. Same menus. Better graphics. It doesn't appear that the offenses are as redic overpowered as they are in NCAA09.
This "adaptive game engine" shit is just a bunch of mini games (same ones as every other madden) that you complete and then they auto-set the difficulty for you based upon how well you do on them. A nice idea, but nothing new.
Graphics are nice. Favres on the cover which made me giggle a little.
No more madden doing the announcing. And they stopped trying to force peoples names into the announcing so much, for instance instead of "That was a great catch by [pause] Randy Moss!" you'll get "That was a great catch by the receiver" but the names still show up from time to time.
the graphics look great, definitely more polished than NCAA09.
