The further I get in my criminal justice degree, the more surpised I am we ever catch anyone for anything.
It is incredible the amount of BIG cases solved by pure. dumb. luck.

Remember, would be serial killers, as this is the only tip I'll give you from the scores of books I've read on the subject...
A decomposing body creates a lot of gas. Underwater, this causes bodies to become incredibly buoyant. You need at least 3x the weight of the body to keep it from surfacing.
Note: Serial killers dont tend to dump bodies in water. Serial killers tend to want their victims bodies found.

I've thought about this before, like Euph said it seems only the serial killers who make stupid mistakes get caught and it's more than likely a conscious/sub-conscious effort to do so.
I'd probably be a sniper cuz that seems cool, and I'd take every precaution to hiding all evidence. Frankly I don't think I know anyone I'd like to kill so I have to think more about that.

FYP, may be different across the pond, but here every copper is a dumbass.
If your going to be a good serial killer, you need to kill from a distance (no evidence at the murder site etc) but also not use something that few people do eg while being a sniper would be cool, only so many people can actually hit anything with a rifle beyond ten feet.
bombing might be fun, but its easy to figure out who you are. hmmmm....
