I would like at least 3gb cpu, but just 3 is fine
I want 1gb of ram, i dont really need much more.

If i had aroung $800 to spend and wanted a PC to last me 2 years, maybe 3 as a second PC, i would buy this.
Antec Sonota Case (coolest case i ever used, big quality power supply and aweome tooless functionality.)
Asus A8N-VM ( Its Asus, whch i prefer, its got decent onboard video, all the onboard features you need, and SATA)
AMD Athlon 64 ( Pick your speed based on your budget, starting @ $150)
- I pick AMD because for the money, you will get a faster machine, however you will end up with at least one driver pain in the ass over the life of the machine. Intelk does seem to have a LITTLE better driver support.
Maxtor 160 GB SATA II (Maxtor has a great return policy and a 3 year warranty, you can't ask fior much better)
LG DVD-RW Dual Layer (they are so cheap it makes me sick i spent $550 on one of the first dual layer burners)
Kingston 1GB Ram ( I used kingston in almost 240 workstations with no memory issues, i am a little biased)
That should price out to about $700 - $750 with enough to get a good video card for multiple monitors if you so choose.
Its a good quality machine, and it will last. you would almost never even notice the difference between a 3000 and a 4000 Athlon 64, programmers compiling code notice those kind of performance increases, even i can't tell the difference without running benchmarks, and i run a ton olf stuff from my pc against a high end database.
Building one yourself and sticking with names you can trust goes along way, in pc's you have to expect lemon parts once in a while, make sure you deal with vendors who understand that.
Hows that for a first post..........whew
PM me if you have more questions or want good mail order stores ets.

Whatever you do build it yourself. Its not hard at all to do and there websites that will tell you what to do step by step. But imo your getting the best deal building your own.
