Um canada doesnt tax any poker winnings though. Id much rather be there when I file my tax return than here. So all you have to do is become a poker pro then you dont have to worry about it as much anymore. Sales tax still screws u I guess.

We're still supposed to report them as income. Technically, even hookers...er..."sex trade workers"...get their earnings taxed. They get screwed both ways.

You know what...you're right... BUT that's only if your winnings come from gambling undertaken for recreational/entertainment purposes, which is most winnings. The Canada Revenue Agency would look at a professional differently, I think, as it is now a form of self-employment. I don't know if there has ever been a tax ruling on this but I'm going to try to find out. If all gambling winnings were non-taxable though, I think Danny Negreanu would still be a Canadian resident.

Please excuse Court. She's living under oh... 25 straight days of rain. Je ne vous shite pas.
Court, I know you're just ranting but IIRC you're a student, so you (should) get a pretty decent tax break.
Besides, my tax dollars help pay for your edjumakashun in addition to those welfarefolk. Though from what I hear, the quality of education has gone down the past few years...
Topic of taxable poker winnings is actually interesting. It would be odd for poker winnings made in Canada to be taxable - or at least nonsensical, since it has already been taxed.
Online poker winnings might be a different matter, but CCRA (or whatever the hell it's called now) might have a hard time tracking it.

Hey leave the Taxes alone, that is how I make my living. God love the U.S. tax codes, so hard and ever changing makes me a good living.
Though I am sorry for those on tight budgets and getting f 'd by taxes.

Lol, sorry, I meant it as a compliment.
Most of girls I know, and every girl I've ever dated, have this crazy, ultra-left wing super liberal thinking that just drives me crazy... I'll leave it at that.
I pay federal income tax, medicare, medicaid, 7% state income tax, 2% city income tax, 7.5% sales tax, and I own my own business, so I may even have to pay unemployment (even though I'm the only 'employee').. I have to check with my accountant on that one. Figure around 45% of my income gets taxed.. and that's before sales tax.

Lukie, you will pay state and federal unemployment taxes along with Ohio Workers Comp if you take a payroll from your company. So add another 3% for SUTA and FUTA up to $9,000 and $7,000 respectively, and then anywhere from 1-15% of your wages for BWC.

Haha yeah? I am not left wing ... at all. Which kinda sucks for living here just cause Canada is so damn socialist ... what with our healthcare and our education and all our lovely social programs ... it all pisses me off. Not to say that I think they're all useless, I just think we take them too far. If I'm going to school and working towards a decent paying career, why the hell should I have to pay more in taxes just because I'm making more money? Why does someone who makes 150k per year pay a HIGHER PERCENTAGE of their income than someone who makes 15k a year? Last I checked, 20% of 150k was more than 15k, shouldn't that be good enough?

Ugh, I know what you mean. And when you have employees, it's even worse because of all the crap you have to pay them along with their hourly wage. I'm managing a painting franchise this summer and I'm only beginning to realize how much extra money I have to pay out because of their damned employee benefits. Yay for workers comp, EI, CPP, and any other crap that I'm paying for. It amounts to an extra 35% of their hourly wage ... that's just retarded.

I hate taxes, but I would further hate a lawless country with no defense and no infrastructure.
And remember, governments primary purpose is to perpetuate.

Been playing money poker for 34 years and decided in 2002 to try that TX Holdem game on TV. Then found Pokerstars in Summer 2005. Still not an overall winner but i am on a good trend and nearly there.

There are ways to run a country without taxing the **** out of us. I never said I disagreed with laws, I just disagree with having 75% of my income taxed when everything is said and done.
And dammit, Canada doesn't even have defense! Gah!!

Sighman23 - Welcome to FTR!!!
And since you opened the door...
Can an S-Corp purchase and own a Porsche and deduct all the costs of ownership and interest as a business expense? A company car?
I'm sooo excited about having a resident tax guy hanging out!

I see where you are going with this. I have no problem paying taxes when it's for things such as defence, infrastructure, education, capital goods, and other such public goods that benefit the country (and the future of the country) as a whole. What I have a problem with is the extraordinary government waste and paying taxes that, ultimately, end up as a check in the hands of another person, ie. welfare.

C'mon man.. look around at all the avatars around here having people with similar attire.. whether it be themselves, their GF, some model, whatever. Maybe some day I'll put a picture of myself in my boxers as my avatar.
Truthfully, if you don't agree with her (or my) views on the economy, that's what you should be attacking.. nothing else.

Yes, Canadians can give themselves an instant raise by moving to the US - IF they don't mind paying for health insurance, IF they don't mind every other person walking around with a handgun, IF they don't mind the religous right and IF they can get in in the first place. The US is a nice country to be rich in, but I'm not sure I'd want to be poor there. So many people with no health coverage at all. Medical debts are the single biggest reason for bankruptcy Stateside.
Both countries have their tradeoffs, I guess. At least we don't have greggy's tax problem in Sweden. Now THAT"S cradle-to-grave socialism. Comfortable I guess, but freakin' expensive.

The concept of a flat tax is actually quite interesting. The Economist (and probably many economists) posits it as the fairest and simplest method of income taxation. I should really look into an economist's thoughts on the challenges it brings in addition to the apparent advantages.
Court, again - please don't bite the hand that feeds. You're getting a sweet deal on tuition - assuming you're in a 30 credit proggie at UBC, I'd guesstimate that 75% of your tuition is subsidized by The Noble Taxpayer.
I think it's pretty cool that you're going to be doing the student painter thing. Should be great experience if you have an entrepreneurial bent. Though compo is a PITA, just imagine how you'd badly you'd be hosed if there was no compo and some staffer who got injured on the job sicced an ambulance-chasing lawyer on you. Same deal as most forms of auto insurance ... which people seem to hate.
It's very "difficult" living north of the richest and most consumerist of all nations living on earth and "wanting" what they have. However I've seen some of the things going on in the US that don't up here - and for that I am glad.

Exactly, because if you could pick your country to be poor in, you’d pick someplace with socialism. Our poor are 10x richer than the poor of most countries and at least that much better off.
What a warped view of the world you have.

I'd rather be a poor sustanance farmer eking out a living in rural China than a highly marginalized Afro-American leaning towards peddling drugs in the ghetto, but that's just me from my very fortunate living situation.
IMO there's a balance to be made. I don't feel that those born into (relative) privilege realize how difficult climbing the economic ladder really is. For an interesting read:

That is true...I'm comparing to the "developed" world, though. The rich/poor gap in the US is nasty, nastier than most other developed countries, mostly due to lack of social safety nets, e.g. universal medicare. But the price you pay for programs like that is higher taxes.
Sure, compared to Haiti etc., the poor in the US live like kings.

ttanaka, thanks for the welcome, though I have been here for a few weeks, don't know why my post count never changes from 1.
As for the Porsche, no you wouldn't be able to get by having the S-Corp pay for the entire expenses. The IRS limits the amount of deductions for cars, and also would monitor personal vs business use, and not allow a deduction for personal use, or make you claim the personal use as income.

While I realize that I'm taking advantage of this, I don't agree with it. It's true that with cheaper education more people are educated and the society benefits as a whole. However, the downside is that many people receive their education here and then leave the country with it. Or at least leave the province. Why is there a nursing shortage, a doctor shortage? I don't know why exactly, I don't follow that stuff, but I know that if I were to become a doctor or a nurse, I would be out of Canada as soon as I graduated (hence my future American husband mwahaha). There's no benefit to staying here, you get taxed way too much. My dad has a business here and he's considering moving some or most of it to Taiwan or the Bahamas because the taxes are way less. It's difficult or impossible to make a lot of money staying here. So while we get our education here, we're not staying here. How does that help the country?

It's a great opportunity to gain experience, I totally agree. It's also a great way to attempt to make a lot of money in a short period of time! I'm not really looking forward to it though, it's gonna be a LOT of work. I'm starting my training for it next weekend, it's gonna be intense. I gotta start hiring my employees soon too ... if you know anyone who has experience in painting and wants a job (from May to August, full or part time), please let me know! Also, if you know anyone in the lower mainland who needs their interior or exterior painted, referrals would be AMAZING. I would be forever indebted to you, doesn't that sound good?

Hey there is no need to laugh at the noob. I don't keep track where I post.
I probably just post in here because I have no idea how to play poker so have no good advice to give to anyone else.
See I know about taxes so I've posted 3 times on this topic.

Courtie- the comparitive shortage of nurses and doctors (compared to say, the U.S.) is easily explained by Canada's universal healthcare plan. Basically, the system destroys a doctor's incentive to provide competively good care (just like it destroys a drug company's incentive to create better drugs and treatments). Thus, good doctors often leave the area (because it's basically monopolized by the government) for better opportunities in a freer country (read U.S.). This is similar to what happens to drug companies, who are met with price controls/regulations that force them to stop providing competitive products...

There are ways to run a country without taxing the **** out of us. I never said I disagreed with laws, I just disagree with having 75% of my income taxed when everything is said and done.
And dammit, Canada doesn't even have defense! Gah!!

your comments directly address my second sentance:
"It is a governments responsibility to perpetuate itself" or something similar.

Been playing money poker for 34 years and decided in 2002 to try that TX Holdem game on TV. Then found Pokerstars in Summer 2005. Still not an overall winner but i am on a good trend and nearly there.

We have our American cousins watching our backside, while they get unfettered access to our natural resources. Our population is the same as California's. We can't AFFORD a beefy military.
