I did some figuring this morning because I was thinking about the mini-convo I had with Lukie about Supernova Elite in that other thread and I'm pretty sure I'm not going for Supernova Elite now. Here's why.
Cliff Notes:
1. I'll make a lot of money this year without it
2. It's hard to play 40k+ hands/week and try to switch to 6-max at the same time
3. I hate tournaments and tournament packages are a big part of the equity gained from Supernova Elite
When I read my very first FTR post the other day, it made me remember what my situation was like in 2005 when I made that post. I was working a computer retail department store job building displays and helping jackass customers. I was living in Raleigh and was going to go to NCSU in the following spring. I was content with working shitty jobs making just enough to get by on.
Then it hit me -- now I fuck off on the computer playing poker and talking on AIM, and in an hour I make what I was making in two days there.
If I pushed for Supernova Elite and played the hours required, I would easily make $250,000 this year, even if I stayed at the current level I'm at and never progressed. However, if I don't play quite as much, just 30k a week instead of ~40k, I'll still make almost $200,000.
The money value from Supernova Elite comes partly from the milestone bonuses and tournament packages, but mostly from the simple fact that you're putting in a metric fuckton of hands. So then, most of your value comes from the fact that you have a motivating factor to get you to play a lot. But I don't really need that; I can easily play 30 hours a week without really trying that hard, so what's the point?
Another factor that's really made me think hard about this is that I want to make an eventual switch over to 6-max sometime this year. And for people reading this who want a reason for the switch, if I want to progress as a player it's the natural move to make. There's no way in hell I'm going to be able to do this successfully if I'm still putting in the amount of hands required for Supernova Elite. Also, in the process I'll hopefully increase my earnings as I improve as a player, so I would likely be able to make $250k this year anyway.
Finally, I've never played live and although I want to start getting into some cash games sometime this year, I really have no interest in playing in the WCOOP or WSOP or any other tournament for that matter. A big part of the equity in making Supernova Elite is in these tournament packages -- something I don't really have any desire for.
So now I guess I'll write some cliff notes at the top and see what kind of comments I get.

I have no interest in discussing strategy with a protege'. Your job is to remain quiet and listen. I have a very systematic approach that I will share with the right candidate and I promise that I will turn you into a force of nature and show you elements of the game of poker that you never knew existed.

Leatherass' blog on Stoxpoker really made me think about it and I've decided that I'm definitely not going for it, but I am still going for $250k.

I mean if you're not going to go for it, you're not going to go for it, but....fresh off the Stars VIP page:
As a Supernova Elite you will automatically be given free entry to the WCOOP main event. You may also choose one of the following two options:
Option A: Any two packages from PokerStars Caribbean Adventure, WSOP Main Event, EPT Monte Carlo, APPT Sydney.
Option B: Any one of the above packages plus $10,000.
You can take $10k instead of one of the big tourneys... so you really only have like $12.6k in tourneys instead of 22.6 or whatever. (Probably what I'll do, haven't totally decided)

I just remember you saying something once like, "Someone who has as much money as I do shouldn't be living with their parents." lol

dude spoon, you gotta play live. probably not as much EV as playing the huge amount of tables as you do, but its a blast. you meet some crazy characters at the casino. plus they all suck at pokah.

If it's really not going to motivate you then I think it's wise for you not to go for it. There's nothing worse than busting your ass for something that really doesn't hold your focus because you know you can do almost as well without killing yourself. Wise decision.

Presumbly the increase in tournaments as a result of SNE would make it harder to then make SNE again the following year due to less time, travel etc.
I noticed on Negreanu's blog that he's only just made Platinum and is going for Supernova this year. Obviously a result of the fact he plays live a lot more.
