I have an older 42 in. 720 Toshiba connected to the cable box. I connected new HDMI cables to it and the sound would not play. However, the older HDMI cables that I have play audio just fine. What gives? Are some HDMI cables not compliant on older TVs?

shouldn't be. As far as I know HDMI doesn't have versions and is just a cable method.
What made you change HDMI cables?

test other cables/ test this cable on something else, they are pretty flaky in my experience.

The weird thing is that I have the same type of cable connected from my blu-ray to the TV and I have audio.
