the low E string on my electric guitar buzzes when played open. anything that I can do to fix this. It's a yamaha that is about 4 years old. I changed the strings recently to try to fix this, but it didn't work.

Yes and no. What type of guitar? What gauge strings?
Excellent webpage on it:

Can you tell exactly where the buzz is coming from? If its buzzing on the first fret then you probably need a new nut. Also, the springs/screws on the bridge tend to come lose now and then on the old Yamaha Pacifica models (the 112 IIRC)

it is coming from the first few frets.
i think i may have bought strings that are too light for my current setup.

I might as well pile on.
Can anyone recommend a decent acoustic guitar for <$200 (this probably doesn't exist), <$500, <$1000?...
I guess I'm most interested in the <$500 option, as I'd like to improve over my POS that I've had for >8 years.

I believe thicker strings could alleviate this if it's mild due to tension issues. I'm not sure, but I had this problem then it went away some time after I started using the thickest strings around. I used them for a loooong time though and they may have done nothing anyways.

Not to toot my own horn but I recommend the Martin DCX1E. It is a low-end Martin that is acoustic-electric, and it really sounds amazing. It receives great reviews everywhere. Most places sell it for $700, but I got mine for about $550 new on sale. I imagine a good used one would be perfect for you. Here's a link... http://www.guitarcenter.com/Martin-D...74-i1148384.gc
