I've decide to try to go Vegan for two weeks. It started out at one month, but the wife and I have cut it back to two weeks. I am a fucking carnivore to the core, and this is going to blow loads of goats.

Why? I don't know, just because I realized what a challenge it's going to be and I want to stir the pot a bit on what I eat on a daily basis.

Anybody here do this full time?

I have been on this BBC 4 kick recently and they have a show called Inside Nature's Giants which dissects whales, elephants, giraffes, sharks, lions and tigers and bears oh my.

One thing they point out is that the vegan diet requires a bloated digestive system while a purely meat diet streamlines an animals guts.

From this television series, I can say with all confidence that you'd be safer going carny.

I had the best fillet steak I've ever had last night, cooked rare, and cooked to perfection. No way on this planet I would give up the opportunity of having that again.

Veganism excludes all animal made products (so dairy products and eggs are not eaten too).

Its pretty hardcore stuff, I wouldn't ever do it. Has to be bad for you right?

Two weeks should be fairly easy as long as you do some research first. Buy lots of groceries and look up lots of recipes. Make sure you have a lot of variety. Many people think being a vegan/vegetarian is nothing but salads and shit (yes feces), but it's much more than that. My wife became a veg a few months back, and since then I've started eating much less meat as well. I still enjoy me a nice big steak but most of our dinners are meat free. And I don't really miss the meat all that much, it's actually introduced me to a wider range of prepared foods. So at the very least, you will be discover some new tasty foods that you might have otherwise avoided.

I've looked into both sides, You will find tons of people who say you will become deficient without eating meat and you will find others that say removing meat is one of the healthiest things you can do. I say it depends. Of course if you eat nothing but carrots and celery, you're going to have problems. But there are many non-meat products you can consume to avoid any deficiencies.

The biggest problem I have with meat is the time it takes to digest. It has to be broken down and takes much longer to go from steak on the grill to stool in the toilet comapred to any fruit, veg, plant, etc. Some people never have an issue with this, but it does effect many people, including myself. I found myself feeling better after cutting down the amount of meat I was consuming. Less stomach pains, less cramps, less rotten farts (which actually may be a con), etc. There have been studies comparing our intestines to other carnivores and herbivores, and from what I've heard, our small-large structure is more like many herbivores.

Be prepared to have to shit a lot more often because everything will be broken down much faster. On average, I shit about 3-4 times per day now vs 1-2 when I was a carnivore.

I suggest buying a juicer and blender if you don't have one already. One of the best things I have for breakfast (or anytime really) is fresh juice blended with fresh fruit. My fav right now has been to juice a couple oranges and a lemon, then toss it in the blender with some strawberries, blueberries and a banana. You can substitute anything for anything, it's near impossible to make it taste bad.

Full vegan isn't really that much harder than being a vegetarian these days anyway. The biggest problem would be dairy, but there are so many non-cow milk alternatives that taste nearly as good, or perhaps better. I've long given up cow milk and have switched to almond milk. But I haven't really looked into alternatives for cheese yet, because well, I fucking love cheese and eat it all the time. Eggs isn't a big deal for me because I don't really like them that much anyway.

But going on another wuffy style rant, I think many people should really try this, if only for 1 week of their lives. You can learn something about your body that you wouldn't have. And if you hate it, it's just one fucking week for gawds sake.

As it relates to dairy, I think many people are lactose intolerant than we think. Our bodies really are only "designed" to consume milk as we are developing as an infant. When we age, our body can lose the ability to break this down as well, because it's not needed.

I think one of the biggest reasons I haven't moved to full time veg is social. It is more difficult to go out or have dinner with friends, if you have to worry about not eating meat. Although, almost every restaurant I've been to lately has at least a few items marked vegetarian (even Taco Bell), so it's becoming easier. You might have to worry about being teased though, hehe. Also, I love the taste of meat and would miss is too much. But switching to a part time veg has been one of the best things I've done health wise. Actually reminds me of a TED video I saw a few weeks back - YouTube - Graham Hill: Why I'm a weekday vegetarian

agree with everything in here. Best thing about it is that it removes your NEED for meat. I go a week or two without eating meat reasonably frequently, and without really noticing. And then i go buy a big, juicy, tasty steak and fry it up.

@ op, some things to think about
1) get some basic dahl recipes from split red lentils and from other pulses
2) marinated tofu - i've done this quite a bit for vegetarians who turn up to my argentinian styled asados...
3) nuts and nut butters
4) roasting seed mixes - combo of sesame, sunflower, and pumpkin kernels in olive oil on low heat in a heavy bottomed pan until the sunflower seeds just start to change colour. Chuck it all onto a plate to cool immediately. Tasty.
5) blenders - esp for pesto types of things

also, re vegan full time. Not something i'm interested in. I've done the no meat except wild meat thing, not eating meat for a few weeks at a time without really realising it thing, and spent a couple of weeks 'supporting' a friend who was doing the vegetarian/dairy free/gluten free/high gci foods free thing - i got very hungry.

Thanks gmml! Yeah, I eat meat 2 sometimes 3 times a day.. and not just a "serving" like a fucking pound of meat. It's WAY more than most people. Our typical family meal is meat, with veggie and fruit. Ship.

This is really more of a chance to see what it's like, to really look at labels a bit more closely (because it's enlightening if nothing else), and discover food combinations that we've never tried before. We checked out 4 books from the library and looked for ACTUAL food recipes... nothing with FAUX meat or FAUX cheese... like actual food. Planned out our week's menu, and went shopping. I'm kinda excited. I'll never EVER give up meat for any length of time longer than 2 weeks again, but I'm interested to try it out.
So you click their picture and then you get their money?

Indian food is pretty heavy on the yogurt, and a lot of the deserts are honey based. But ya, if you know what youre ordering Im pretty sure you can do this easily by just eating indian food.

Between the flaxseed, soy milk, and granola... I had 25g of protein for breakfast. Also a mess of blueberries, apple, banana, raspberries, blackberries, and OJ.

Last night had Cashew Veggie wraps - Sauteed broccoli, carrots, onion, sprouts, cashews, with tamari, and wild rice, rolled up in iceberg lettuce leaves, with a little sriracha sauce. Vegan aint' so bad.

First, consider your sources. Veg and veganism are borne mainly out of moral subjectivity and unsubstantiated silliness. They pretty much get it all wrong, but the things they get right are more a coincidence than anything. Solely by forcing people to eat more micronutrients and fiber and fewer calories, those diets by default can improve health beyond the average diet because the average diet is garbage

If you actually want to do it right, look at the biology. This will show you that cutting out meat isn't actually beneficial, but cutting out grains and dairy generally is. Eat that which our species evolved for, not what hippies say. We evolved for a wide array of fruits, vegetables, nuts, and meat; grain and dairy were introduced very late in the game, and have been quite problematic since.

Better yet, do some research and know what you're doing. It's not the hardest thing in the world. In fact, cutting out meat product is extremely unhealthy (things like lack of dha/epa, but lots more stuff too). There's a reason we've been eating what we've eaten since the dawn of man

I have no interest in discussing strategy with a protege'. Your job is to remain quiet and listen. I have a very systematic approach that I will share with the right candidate and I promise that I will turn you into a force of nature and show you elements of the game of poker that you never knew existed.
