So I give him a call earlier to see how NYC/Turning Stone is going. He is playing in the 5.2k buyin main event. I have 2k of his action. Details of the action go something like this: for the first 5200 of his prize, money goes back to everyone who has a piece of his action (he has some of himself, not sure how much, irrelevant for now). After that, everybody who has a piece of the action gets 50%. Props to gabe for making such an awesome deal for himself, given that the prize pool is very top heavy. Fwiw, I think I'm +EV on this so keep that in mind and i'm not at all unhappy with our deal.
Anyway, I ask him a retarded question like, do you think you're +EV in the event? He says of course, blahblahblahblah, then I mention something about how it's possible that he can be +EV but I could be -EV on the stake (given how the re-payment structure was set up). He claims that this is impossible, and that there is "ABSOLUTELY NO WAY" that could be. I tell him that he is blatantly wrong, both of us are stubborn as always. Of course I am right.
I will show very simple maths if less than 100% of people agree with me.

it doesnt seem possible, you get your money back before gabe gets paid, if anything it could be +ev for you and -ev for him, right? My guess is with it being top heavy it cancels that out.

Yes, you could be getting the way worst of this.
If you do this a lot, then just trade action straight up.

No Lukie is 100% right, the stake completely is ripping off the backers, although that is what a stake is really. I'm supporting gabe in a stake because i want to take a gamble pretty much, I know the stake is actually pretty easily -EV for me but w/e.
I think it's a little ridiculous how a good poker player like gabe can't see why this may be -EV on your side, he should at least acknowledge that.

Doesn't it complicate things when Lukie said "(he has some of himself, not sure how much, irrelevant for now)."
If gabe is a backer as well as the stake, does it make a difference?

No need. Consider each pay-out possible as a number on a roulette wheel. With the deal given the staker gets a higher % for smaller payouts thus more money overall the flatter the structure. For it to be +EV, winner-take-all (extreme case) Gabe needs a double or so chance of the typical player to win.

I remember at PCA he blatantly refused to do this for a while saying how much better of a tourney player (in his eyes) he was than me. We might have ended up doing something like 5% swap, honestly can't remember. We both busted on the first day. I couldn't go on this trip.

well, my intent wasn't to argue whether or not the stake was +EV or not from my perspective. fwiw I do realize that he is getting a very good deal on this, and maybe I grossly overestimate the kind of edge that I think he has because I don't think I'm getting way the worst of this by any stretch but I could be wrong.
The point was that gabe doesn't realize that it's possible (and as a lot of people seem to think, probable) that he could be +EV in the event while I could be -EV in the stake.

(amount gabe gets as a backer) + (amount gabe gets as a player) = gabe?

lukie its all about how much winnings you get. if its 50/50 you might not be getting the best of it, but its up to you to determine how much you should get to be fair. people agreed to 50/50, so whatever.
also, im about to send some PMs out saying im sending the pieces back anyway because of some stuff

When I heard about this stake I couldn't believe that y'all were giving gabe 50-50. Assuming they pay 10%, he'd need a 90% ROI to make the stake profitable. This isn't the WSOP main event. It's a small field against relatively tough competition and I don't believe huge ROI's are doable. YMMV.
GL in teh donkaments gabe and good job of pwning FTR.

Can't tell if this is serious or not but I don't necessarily think I'm smarter than you. It doesn't make you dumb to gambool it up with an -EV stake for a buddy, I was just surprised by how badly I thought you guys were getting hosed here.

btw i think my really quick and very bluff/fishy looking oversized 3-bet made him think i had air/JT/76. or that he just did something stupid, with emphasis on that last one.
ha! thanks for the $600 gabe!!

50/50 stakes are almost always around a break even gamb00l, and if a person needs to be staked they will almost always go for 70/30 unless there are other backing fish.

it's been too long since i had a 50k month... way too long. i think i'm at like +9k for december, but that includes a -10 buyin day at 3/6 then a couple days off for my birthday festivities.
i need to play more... seriously.
