So what exactly happened to the forums today, they were down for quite a while, anyone know?
I think Tyson forgot to put the 50 cents in the machine.

It appears there are viruses and worms that are attacking phpbb forums, we've been hit by several from different IP's and our host shut us down, telling us we were consuming too much resources. They've brought us back up but I don't think this battle is over yet.

It's not the fault of the forum software. Some asshat wrote a virus that propagates out on the net looking for sites that run phpBB and when it finds one sends connections to the site in an attempt to exploit a vulnerability in the phpBB code.
I guess it actually is the forum software's fault indirectly.

We've already upgraded, thank God, because the damage could be way, way worse. The upgrade did protect this board, if we hadn't upgraded, the entire forum would just show pages like:
This site is defaced!!!
NeverEverNoSanity WebWorm generation #
But the upgrade doesn't prevent a bunch of worms trying to hack the forum. Eric just put in some other fix he found, we'll see if that stops these worms from coming in...

Yeah, the 700 "guests" were the problem.
They weren't real people browsing our forums at all, they were yeti-spiders wearing asshats telling bad beat stories.

I'm not buying your story.
I bet ttanka was just having a big ass pretend tea party with a bunch of "guests." One spilled a little scolding tea on the server and all hell done broke loose.

Is there anything that can be done to ensure the continued use of the word 'asshat' on this board?

Asshat: noun
I don't think one can 'asshat' someone anymore than one can 'asshole' someone.

Clearly you haven't lived. I meet with a small group of close friends to asshat once every season. Really gets the blood flowing.

We changed the 702 number to 50 since that's about the most real people we've had on the forum at any one time.
It is a good thing we moved from phpbb 2.0.6 to 2.0.11 recently, things could have been much worse.
