on your profile page, the 6 seemingly random people listed under "friends" are in fact not random at all; people are more likely to show up there if they have visited your page recently.
i had a few pro facebook stalkin chicks break this theory down to me and wanetd to know what you people thought

I just went to my profile and refreshed it like 10 times and yeah, it did appear that the same 10-15 people kept showing up. There might be some truth to this.

This theory needs testing. visit a friend's page once a day every day and see if you show up in their friends list every day.

no thats not the way to test it, they probably have something so you dont show up in their lists when they have lots of friends so u get exposed to more people

Why couldn't that be tested by the way I suggested? If it's a 'more likely' thing, then you'd need a large sample size to show that you (who is visiting their page recently) is showing up on the friends list more often than random chance would dictate.
Or am I not getting this 'theory'

Hmmm, I refreshed 8 times, including clicking off and back a couple times (and logging out once). All 6 came from the same pool of 9 people.
1 is my gf
1 is a good friend in town
1 is a good friend out of town and staying at my house this weekend
2 are dudes I have barely said hi to in the last year
2 are girls I could hypothesis were wondering what I was up two
2 are girls that I have barely said hi to in the last year
so it's weird the same people popped up, but at the same time it doesn't logically follow from this small sample that they've clicked my page recently (small sample).
Maybe it's people who have updated their profiles or logged in recently?

I did a mini-research and kept refreshing a friend from high schools page. It kept coming up with the majority of people that I went to high school with, when he had about 500 friends. I only saw people I didn't know in about 1/6 every time it refreshed.
This makes me believe it shows people you might know.

There is something because I got from the same sample of 9 as last night (i.e. people don't click on my profile often)
We could test this. Everyone that's FB friends with me should click on my profile.

k ive been refreshing pages an unhealthy amount. like every1 else only say 9-10 people would appear, and it would only be them. this was true for other people.
but its just changed to a new set of 9, that only appear, and theyre completely different
i think facebook is on to me

fuck im obsessed with this, ive been clicking refresh for an hour now, trying to work it out.
have noticed tho:
a) every1 has a set of about 10 people maybe more that it can choose from
b) every1 sees the same set.
c) the set, is not related to profile updates
d) i got a feeling the set changes every hour
e) it might be related to who was online last

I'm seriously dumb for thinking this was anything but random, but it was a bit weird how there is a group of like 9 people which changes every day instead of it being random like it appears. I'm convinced it's a random of friends which changes every day, it's just a little bit odd that it doesn't just pick 6 friends at random every refresh which would surely be easier to code anyway.
