What are everyone's plans of everyone for election night? I plan on drinking and staying up late... early candidates for a drinking game:
Voter Fraud (i'm sure this bullshit flag waving will happen frequently)

That's awesome Rilla... I got my vote in this morning. I thought about doing the absentee ballot, but I really wanted to vote today.
I am WAY jacked up for this. (just excited at this point, I haven't started drinking yet.)

could everyone list their reasons for excitement?
FWIW I voted for Nader because of Obama's support for the Afgan war, so no McCain bashing. I know why people don't like McCain, I want to know why people like BO so much.
Also I have come around to the opinion that the two party system is an epic fail and the sooner we start changing it the better. So I'm sorta down today, even though I think it's awesome we finally (may) have a black president and he's way the lesser of the evils.
Cheer me up FTR?

I believe he is a good, honest and smart man who is not overly tied up with big business interests and will be a great catalyst for the undoing of the bad sentiments the last regime created in the international community which is extremely important.

ty. Can I ask how old you are?
these are OK reasons, but don't get me pumped up for Obama because they are mostly the reasons I was excited for Bill Clinton and that turned out not so great. I hope I am proved very wrong.

I am 24. I just voted. I don't think Obama is perfect but he's a candidate I can get behind. Also, Clinton's years were overall positive imo.
Also I didn't mean to give such a generic spiel but you asked for reasons to get excited for him and these are some good, albeit non-super specific or issue related reasons why I think Obama for prez is a very good thing.

I'm excited about Obama because he's real to me like very, very few politicians have ever been. In Feb. I read his first book, Dreams From My Father, which he wrote before he ever ran for any office and he came across as thoughtful, honest and intelligent. He's had an interesting life (won't rehash here) that would bring an international perspective to the presidency, which is important for so many reasons (won't go into here). I don't think he's going to solve all of the enormous problems facing our country right now, especially the economic ones, but I think he has his priorities straight and will consider all sides of issues carefully before making decisions. I think worst case scenario is that the economic situation gets much worse, he can't do anything about it (both quite likely) and he's a one-termer as result. But best case scenario is that he's a transformational president... one that sets us on the road to universal health care, re-establishes service to our country as a priority for young people, corrects our image abroad, and most of all, tells us the truth. I know it may be wishful thinking, but I think it's all possible.

Meh, Bill presided over an era of corporate thievery and didn't really do anything besides get laid. He was an OK figurehead but we can't spend 1 billion electing a stay the course figurehead. And he paved the way for W.
Had I known Obama was going to come out for a football playoff I may have been wooed

Yano.. It's not very often I can say this.
But my vote simply doesn't count.
Montana is a wierd backwater state where even if 100% of the populace voted Obama, the Electoral College votes would declare a "Vote of no confidence" and vote for McStupid anyway."
Sooo... I'd love to vote, but it's just not worth my time, as all of the montana propositions are fluff anyway.

I think Zook hit the nail on the head as far as succinctly describing why I and many others are excited for Obama.
And i don't know how Clinton paved the way for W. BTW I don't believe W actually won either election fairly but that is a whole 'nother can of worms.

Best thing Bill did: work with Congress to balance the budget and pay down the nat'l debt. Worst thing Bill did: let Iraq kick out UN weapons inspectors with no repercussions, setting the stage for the Iraq war.

That was awesome. Obama's answer to that question was >>>>> McCain's stupid steroid response. BUT, McCain telling Berman that the one quality he wanted voters to think of when they saw his name on the ballot today was "He... could.. GO... ALL... THE... WAY!" made me lol hard.

Not gonna lie. I'm beginning to think that NAFTA was Clintons biggest FUBAR during his admin.
It's obvious that the Democrats rescinding of NAFTA was a major platform this election. McCain's camp made a HUGE mistake by not attacking that.

I'm at work and it will be noon when the first results are coming in. I have my Obama '08 T-Shirt on and even most of my colleagues are rooting for Barack. This is NEW ZEALAND!!! and we all hope that Obama is going to win. If that happens then a great amount of goodwill from overseas will come back towards the US.

yeah I saw joe the P, lol. Probably a republican plant and they forgot to check and see if he had any clue what taxes are or how they work. No more police if you don't pay taxes ftw
I think without Bill's blow job Al Gore carries Tennessee and Arkansas and there would never have been a florida to worry about. If it's all rigged then none of this matters and we should be even more scared that now we get 'our' canidate.
I am glad to hear new zealand like him, that may be worth it in and of itself. I know I will never forgive the country for re electing W and I tend to assume most of the world feels the same.
thanks for the post zook.
the skeptic in me says the dems get killed in two years because of the economy and the lose at least the house, then they can all blame each other in 4 years. Like I said, the whole 'seems like a great person' is a legit reason to vote for him, it just doesn't work for me. Bill went on MTV and talked to my generation for like the first time (I am 31, could not vote his first election, he was my first president vote in 96.). He played the sax on Arsenio and talked all about helping poor people. He said he'd free Lenard Peltier (that's for my ex fiance!). Also the health care fail.
@ wufwugy, BO rolled back on the legalize it stance.

Mr. Obama's differing answers on marijuana are among five conflicts between positions he took while running for Senate in 2004 and those he now articulates while running for president, a review of debate tapes shows. Experts said the likely reason for the changes was that Obama ran as a liberal during his Senate run but has become more centrist as he pursues the broad coalition required to win the White House.
|
Crap like this is what makes me think we have to get away from the two parties because I guess (or maybe I want to think) he does want to legalize it but that position doesn't get you elected. If we don't let these guys and gals think for themselves the country will continue to suck. People are not smart, that's the reason we elect hopefully smarter people.

he hasnt flip flopped, those sources have misread the facts. you have to remember that things can often be very technical. so when he says that those convicted of marijuana drug crimes should be punished isnt in the same context as when he says we should rethink the drug laws. one is a conviction under current laws (he is not suggesting to break the law by ignoring the conviction which is what many people want to think what he means), and the other is changing the laws to in effect decriminalize marijuana.
so yes, he still wants to rethink the drug laws with recommendation of marijuana decriminalization. if there are facts that show otherwise then im wrong, but those articles are not them
