I use Nero for cd's. Its real good there. Dont know about dvd's though but I would figure if its good for cd's it should be a good one for dvd's also.

Sorry, dont know about any free ones, so I cant help you there.

Nero sounds like a good option and I don't mind paying for a good one.

Never tried Nero, but I use DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter (they work together). I have never had a problem and they are awesome for burning movies. PM me if you want more details. And yes they're both free.

DVD Shrink is a great free program, works as well as any I've tried. Nero is excellent for cds but haven't had much luck with it for dvds.

If you mean "backing up" dvd movies, then it's AnyDVD (which runs in the background, and ELBY's Clone DVD2 for the win.

Nero for everything else.

its an oem version so it comes without a lot of the extra features nero offers, but it will burn cds/dvds.

looks like you found something on your own though.

Nero is legal. Decrypter is not because, as the name says, it decrypts a protected DVD so you can illegally copy it. DVD Shrink may be illegal too. I know big brother shut down one of those so probably no future updates unless somebody else picked it up. Since most DVDs these days are larger than the blank media you can buy, DVD Shrink can, as the name says, shrink the size to fit on a burnable DVD. You can also eliminate the extra junk you don't want from a copied movie. Like - languages you don't use, if you have widescreen you can skip burning the standard screen version, trailers, etc. You can even skip the main menu and have it paly the movie right when you put the disc in. This is great for kid videos - no buttons to push so you keep playing poka uninterrupted.

I suggest removing all the stuff you don't want with dvd shrink and don't compress if you don't have to. Usually you can pull this off. Only had to compress a couple movies.

Anway - great programs. Alcohol100% works too. I back up my own movies and I feel it is my right to do so despite greedy jerks telling me it's not. They put their movies on media that scratches so easily. I need a backup, especially with kids.
