Ive got this stupid fucking portfolio that I need to put together by monday for my baking and pastry class. The thing is I just checked my grades online, and I have a 72% right now, which is passing. The Portfolio is worth 12%, and the chef is a pretty generous grader. I would mostly get bumped up to a B. The problem is, is that Ive barely started, and its going to be typing out 30+ pages of notes, some of which Ill have to fabricate since I have misplaced/lost/never had them. I also am going to have to put pictures in, and type out a buncha other crap and then refine it so it looks good. My estimate is that it would take 14-16 hours of work.
Pros(of doing it):
-if I put in the work it will net me a B
-my chef wont think Im a retard
Cons
-waste of time when its not at all necessary
-I could be doing something else like masturbating
-its possible that I do it, and since I am actually missing a lot of notes, Id still get a C
Pros(of not doing it):
-opens up my weekend to poker playing and random fits of masturbation
-I can go get fuccccked up tonight like Ive been dying to do for so long
-I can let my shoulders down and stop stressing
Cons:
-I could let my chef down and hed think Im a lazy schmuck. I really do care what this chef thinks because hes been good to me and did a really good job of conveying his ideas. Also he said that he would be happy to let me practice my knife cuts in his class. (hes not supposed to do this really)
-Id get a C ldo

You know you have to do this. If it's really your passion to cook, you will want to do this.
By the way, a B is not a C, and it's not even close.

If it was me, I wouldn't do it. But, although I knew the material, I was a terrible student who got bad grades because of never doing shit like that.
Don't be like me.

make a good impression on your chef instructor. Anyone can cook food; but if you get a good word in from this guy you don't know where that could get you.

normally i'd say, wtf ja??? don't do that shit, are you crazy!??????? (rhetorical question, i know)
but this kinda stuck out.. "I really do care what this chef thinks because hes been good to me and did a really good job of conveying his ideas. Also he said that he would be happy to let me practice my knife cuts in his class. (hes not supposed to do this really)"
I think you should do it. Going from a C to a B doesn't seem too important, though. In the food/bar industry, experience and people skills get you a lot farther than grades. In a roundabout way then, this suggests you should do it.

and come on man, when do i EVER recommend that somebody work on something school related? this might actually be the first time. plus it's not like you're big timing at poker (yet!!), where you have a huge opportunity cost.

after talking this over with boost and understanding what he actually has to do, i have thought about this and come up with my new answer of, "do whatever you feel like doing."
taking notes on an entire textbook does not sound like fun.

does gpa matter in culinary school?
If so, how much does it matter?
I'm heavily leaning towards screw it (leaving time to screw yourself) but could be persuaded otherwise.

This chef obviously likes you. Don't do anything that would make him think less of you. You may need a favor or recommendation from him in the future... you never know. What's 16 hours of pain right now when you're talking about the rest of your career?

nah, gpa doesnt really mean shit. No chef is gonna be like "well Id love to hire you, your resume is great, but sadly your gpa just isnt up to our standards." Sometimes I find myself getting into the over achiever mode trying to get the highest grade possible. But really thats stupid in most schools but esp in culinary school. I feel like when I relax and just focus on learning I get way more knowledge, even if my grade suffers.

Yeah, I admit it was kinda douchey to ask for advice then just ignore it. I guess I already had made up my mind but didnt realize it yet. Also despite having my mind made up, I was still curious to see what people thought about this.

you don't have to like it, you just got to do it
\
\hopefully your math is corrrect and your C doesn't drop to a D or worse
and you probably will not get much extra support from the teacher in the future
like when another teacher asks if so and so is a fuckup and he answers yes kind of
think of your future and how you want to get there
i guess Cs will get you in to the Uni of ID

Its easy to recommend to other people that they should do hours and hours of mindnumbing, tedious work for relatively small benefit.

gah... going out and partying had nothing to do with it. I went to my friends house, it was me him, his girl and his roommate. I drank all of 3 beers then slept on his couch. I didnt decide to not do it because I didnt want to miss "the party." I understand if it came across that way though, but its not the case. I didnt do it because I simply do not see the benefit. If there was nothing to do last night, not that there really was much to do, I would have still not done it.

It doesn't seem like your GPA will have much affect on your income/position/opportunities given your major. (I could easily be wrong).
If the reference thing is an option do it.
I completely blew off my physics labs. They were 1 credit hour each, and lab was 4 hours and it took another 4 hours a week to write the report. By getting 3 Cs instead of 3 As (was a 3 course sequence), I lowered my accume by 0.03 points tops.
I would never have done this when I was in undergrad (because of effort/return). When I was in gradschool I would have kept up with the work as I went a long, thus it would have been easy to finish (because I cared about learning as much as possible and doing a good job).

yah man, this has no bearing on future employment whatsoever. Also my chef is not a bureaucratic retard. He understands real life. Also he has offered tutoring to me. Pretty much while he holds other classes, he has invited me to come and do as I please. Any disappointment he has can easily be made up by impressing him during this tutoring.
My school is one of the top culinary institutions in the country, it is also one of the few that is accredited. They have to require silly little "research" papers, and portfolios like this to appease the powers that be. However most chefs realize that while these assignments might have value, they are not essential in a culinary students education. They value practical hands on skills and knowledge over some silly well written paper. With all that said, I plan to talk to him and explain myself to him. I think he will understand my choice and see it as a valid one.

Agreed. I hope you're not doing it as a "not worth the effort".
Next time do the work weekly and submit a good portfolio. You'll overall make a better impression if you generally do good work, instead of just good cooking.
