Editor's Note: Suicide notes are usually written to intimates. In the case of one young man who just killed himself in Orange County, Calif., the suicide note was posted on a popular social networking Web site. PNS contributor Milan Gagnon reports as one of millions of people who followed the suicide online. Gagnon is a writer based in Prague.
MySpace red
Czech Republic--At 8:14 a.m. on Nov. 29, Joshua Anson Ballard posted his final bulletin on the Internet social-networking site MySpace.com. Ballard, who took the online identity "you BROKE my LIFE," followed his subject line, "do me a favore [sic] ....", with a body that read:
"call the police.
Address ... Abadejo, Mission Viejo, CA 92692.
tell them to go down the hall to the bathrooom.
im soo sorry<3"
About 15 minutes later, according to the Orange County coroner's office, Josh, 17, killed himself with a gunshot to the head. Within minutes, MySpace, which promotes social interaction among young people and is popular with teenagers, was alight with messages about the suicide. Here in Prague, I saw a note about Josh on MySpace and checked it out.
By 10 p.m. the night of his death, Josh was being eulogized.
He killed himself over a girl "and other things," writes Flower King Of Flies on MySpace, who says the death was preventable. "This could of ben stoped," he says via a Myspace comment page that has become Josh's memorial. "All the people that knew didnt do shit. i had a good time with u in ceramics. f--- all your friends that did nothing."
So it goes, Josh's life splayed out on the black backdrop he'd created as his space.
According to his words, Josh loved "girls who cry"; was married; was 8 feet, 11 inches tall and made $250,000 a year or more. Josh was a smartass. He posted self-portraits that featured him at his emo-kid best: shaggy hair, pouting lips, intentionally blank expression. He posted an ad for a clothing company called Emo Police that featured a man hanging from the P.
Emo, a 20-year-old sub-genre of punk rock, didn't kill Josh, even if emo songs are mostly un-ironic paeans to self-pity. Kids kill themselves whether they listen to country or classical. The death-trip soundtrack can easily be Snoop Dogg or Slayer; on Josh's page, it's Senses Fail.
Josh wanted. He sought attention by posting surveys in his blog with categories like "Would you ..." and questions like "stick up for me if I was being put down?" In another, he queried friends as to whether they loved him, had crushes on him, etc. The surveys, common among Myspace teenagers, mean little more than that the kid dug compliments. Craved 'em.
Sixty-two times he was eulogized -- sometimes with just one line, sometimes with just a word -- in the first 17 hours. "i'm speechless," wrote Kelsey, a 17-year-old from San Juan Capistrano who enjoys "good times." "Rest in peace, Josh." Rach, who posted seven farewells in those hours, told him, "It says you broke my life - well you broke ours."
I didn't know Josh, should never have. Wouldn't have, had a former source in Idaho not posted a bulletin from her Myspace account. "this is the most horrible thing i've ever seen," Tori'd headlined it, using haphazard Myspace capitalization. "Honestly," wrote the former Orange County teen who'd received it as a forward from a friend. "It will make you sick to your stomach." I read it, braced for some banal but benign forwarded joke.
Now I know Josh, know that his friend YOUR KISSES MAKE MY HEART STOP says he was the happiest guy around. He protected her from mean guys at school, protected her from spiders, always told her to smile. "unfortunatly we had a scary about 4 days ago he atemted suicid and failed we were all on his back ever since but this mornig right before school he posted this on a bulliton ..." she wrote me. "as soon as my friend rach saw that she told mimi and mimis mom call the police and drove up to his house (they live 1 street up from each other) she found it was to late. if i could telll josh one thing is that i love you and i wish that you could have send the people that hold you dear to there hearts. you always seid that nothing is as bad as it seem."
Kids type quicker than they think. They bleed words, don't contrive them, and, even if I disdain Net-speak, I have the luxury of never needing to type so frantically. Immersed in his requiem, not 30 hours after he did what he did, I know Joshua Anson Ballard. With his suicide announced on an Internet bulletin, his life remembered in a series of hastily typed prose that comes in blurbs and missives, and his loved ones handling their grieving through instant messages and blogs, will forever words be left on his Web page rather than coins or roses on his grave? We'll have to visit every Nov. 29.
|
Wow, he sincerely killed himself.

Yes, it's a serious, controversial and emotional subject, but worthy of discussion. I personally don't think it warranted getting locked.
As 'rilla said, though, keep it in good taste and avoid the frivolous remarks.
If things get overtly nasty and bitter in this thread, it will be dumped.

Meh, I have a pretty sick sense of humour and on one level i find it funny...
Go up a few levels and it's a loss of human life, not too funny. Before I do something I try to empathize with who it will effect. It would suck if like someone in my family did this (even though I think suicide is pretty weak) and I'd be lugubrious.
What if ur dad did this Muxxy?

yah the reason I asked rilla to close the thread was because it was posted to poke fun at this. A joke about an old lady having cancer and dieing can be hilarious, but a joke about a specific old woman that actually did have cancer and died, well thats just not funny. You see what Im saying?
Oh, and I know its blatant hypocracy, however hellen keller jokes will forever be funny.

doggz, we have no reason to believe this is untrue, so if this really is this guys suicide note, I admit its a bit corney or cliche or whatever to post it in your blog, however would it be funny if someone comitted suicide and I posted a link to thier suicide note taht I scanned into my computer? If this is all made up, well ... I just dont have that emo sense of humor I guess. But read my last post before this, and youll see, I find sick jokes funny, but not jokes about specific sick things.

I can't imagine offing myself over a person of the opposite sex. How pathetic is that? What is this the middle ages? For my heart doth beat for you. I must fetch death in the stead of such sorrows of bachelorhood, for thou doth resemble a whiny weak douchebag.
Have you ever in your life had the thought "Hey, she was a pretty good hump, and now she's gone. I guess I'll just shoot a hole in my face."
I'm sorry, but I'm a fucking artist and I don't whine over women. You know why people offed themselves over mates in the middle ages? It's because you couldn't find another healthy one for 100 square miles. You lose a good looking girlfriend back then, and you're stuck humping the ugly barpig downtown with tuberculosis.

I dont understand very well what u say. My english is no good.
I dont know ur age, im still young and i was younger which means , i was naive and believe on "soulmates, true-love" and stuff.
Even all this was a mistake ... i used to have great fun and want to spend 100% of my time with her , marry her , grow-old with her.
So even i really dont understand what u mean , since u are not in my shoes i not care what u say "sorry"

If the letter you scanned happened to be funny for how it was writen or what it said, then yes, it would be funny. Just because someone wrote it then killed themselves doesn't make what they actually wrote any less hilarious.
I guess I can see past the truth, because he's dead, and I can laugh knowing that I can't change that.
(I'm not talking about my 'friends sister killing herself, then laughing with the family or friends about it'. Noone on this forum knows this guy, and none of you are even affected by his suicide.)

Doggz, just a question I was thinking about.
Let's say that your (blank) died tragically by getting suffocated in a pile of elephant shit. Just a huge shit-slide that he/she was caught in while petting some elephant.
If the blank was your brother, would you laugh? You mother? You grandmother? Your aunt? How far removed from you do they have to be before it's funny?
I would say great grandfather or great great grandmother.

Well I don't really consider the original idea very funny but lets say I did. In this case I wouldn't know because it hasn't happened. Probably someone I don't care about.
Lets say it was my dad. If you posted a news article about the death that was funny, I think you guys would laugh. Do you see why?

A large part of what makes sick jokes funny is the shock value. You're not supposed to find these things funny, and that makes it funnier than it is, in a weird way. I think kids of my generation first got a taste of this with the space shuttle Challenger jokes that were going around. But at the age I was then, I wasn't yet sophisticated enough to understand the level of irony that made it funny.
Sarah Silverman is one example of this. And I don't actually care for her much as a comedian. But for people that like her - the reason her material "works" is because it's so BLATANTLY offensive, she can't possibly mean any of it. Holocaust jokes, rape jokes... it's appalling to basically everybody. So it becomes not just a racist joke, but a joke about racism. It's ironic and shocking and funny on its own merits. "South Park" also does this stuff all the time with Cartman's distinct brand of offensiveness. I just posted a similar kind of joke in my FTR poker blog, about Columbine. Tasteless? Yes. That's the point.
All that stated... I don't know if I get that vibe from Muxy. That irony. Maybe I'm wrong but it kind of looks like he just thinks it's funny to mock a dumb kid that killed himself. And maybe it IS funny... I honestly don't know. It's hard to find that thin line between ironic meta-tastelessness and genuine tastelessness, and even harder to figure out if that distinction really means anything. It's humor, it doesn't have to be smart or ironic to make you laugh. Maybe it's just my latent adult sorta-liberal sensibilities bothering me. I can see both points of view on this one.

Fair enough. Let me ask you this: if I said "I'm so mad about this bad beat I took on Party Poker, I'm going to hijack a plane and crash it into their offices" - would you find that funny? Or if I said "I'm going to round their execs up and gas them like a bunch of Jews"? And if so, why?
Don't mistake my intentions, I'm not trying to make an attack. I'm legitimately asking the question. Do you think those jokes are funny? And if so, why? Does the offensiveness not bother you, or does it somehow make the joke more funny? I'd really like to know. Like I said, some jokes of this style I find hilarious because I know the shock value was put in there on purpose. I know the guy saying it isn't actually a white supremacist that supports killing Jews. But if I knew he was - or more to the point, if I had no idea whether he was or not - would I find it as funny? To me, the irony is what makes that kind of joke funny. If it's not ironic, it strikes me as pretty damn callous and not as clever as it wants to be. But that might be just me. I'm genuinely curious how other people react to that.

I don't find the first case funny. It just sounds like a temper tantrum laced with violence. Not funny.
The second one I chucked at. Not because I have any disfavor for Jews but because it is so offensive I was struck back. No way I would ever say such things though because they are just too offensive to too large an audience. Which basically proves your point.

I'm not offended by either, but out of context they aren't funny.

The music to the background of the Hitler Myspaceide is what makes the whole thing work. Cracks me up.

You guys are way to sensitive to random stuff on the internet.

I don't think anyone said they were offended.. I just think it's incredibly rude and in poor taste. At least have some respect for pete's sake. One of my GF's really good friends (this was long before I met her) killed herself almost a year and a half ago.. and my GF still hasn't gotten over it.
Sorry but I don't want to read shit like this on FTR.

(I'm not talking about my 'friends sister killing herself, then laughing with the family or friends about it'. Noone on this forum knows this guy, and none of you are even affected by his suicide.)

No need to get hostile.
We have been though this before though. If you think this is 'rude', then just skip this post. Many of the members don't agree that this is poor taste, but some do. I don't continue reading posts that I don't like, and we don't force you to read posts that you don't like.
On another note. If your girlfriend still has real issues with her friends suicide, she should seek counseling. There are professionals that sole job is to help people move on from traumatic events. Good luck with that.
