dave said all of this on his own forum:
"When I was Bob Stupak's advisor, we would sometimes talk about various people in our lives using this admittedly simplistic and perhaps immature rating system. The Sklansky Friends-Enemies Rating System.
To calibrate it, assume you are thirty years old, have a million dollar bankroll, two kids, and an income of 200K. The person who you are "rating" we will assume has 50K and an income of 30K. Even if you know this isn't their actual situation.
The question is how much would you pay to somehow add 50K to their bankroll if they never knew you were responsible and you would never financially benefit from this gift. Forget tax deductions. The answer necessarily must be between zero and 50,OOO since if it was more, you would simply GIVE him the 50K.
How many people would you rate above 10,000? Between 1,000 and 10,000? Between 100 and 1000? Above ten dollars? Above one dollar? Of course your answer relates to not only how many people you really like but also to how financially generous you are.
Now we get to those people who you dislike or hate. Many of you goodytwoshoes might still go for a few cents to give them 50K secretly. But not the nastier among us. For us there is the converse rating system where we pay to DECREASE his or her bankroll. Anonymously of course (unless we choose otherwise). So with the same assumptions about income, how much would you pay to make his 50K disappear? Notice that in this situation the possible answers range from zero all the way up to a million.
Is there anyone you would pay more than 50K to do this to? 10K? 1K? Care to elaborate? "

um, 1 dollar for everyone I know. I don't understand why you wouldn't spend 1 dollar to give anyone even remotely close to you 50k. And why, if the option is available to you, spend more than 1 dollar?

Yea, in your system you never have to pay more than $1. The amount you pay needs to correlate to the amount you give.

No, you guys are misunderstanding. The question is how MUCH would be willing to pay to give that person $50,000, not how little. So the max might be your kids... you might be willing to pay $30,000 to get them $50,000. The min would be any random person you felt generous enough to give a $1 to. Somewhere in between would be friends, FTR members, etc.
I think it's cool. I have a lot of friends I think I'd pay ~$300 for, but I'm not a baller, so above that it gets dicey.
The enemies thing is funny, but I can't think of anyone I'd pay to take money away from. I guess there are some politicians and political groups, but $50K is a drop in the bucket for most of them, so I probably wouldn't pay that much, maybe $50 at the most.

I would only be willing to pay the minimum amount.
Why would I be willing to pay more when I can get them the same 50k for $1?

That's not the question. How much would you be willing to pay? If I told you you could ONLY get the person the $50k for $30k, would you do it? How about ONLY for $10k? How about $500? Keep going down until you find your answer. The goal is to find the largest amount of money you would pay to anonymously get someone $50k.

guys, this isn't a trick question, the answer for everybody shouldn't be $1.
If 'how much' isn't clear (I guess it could be a bit deceiving), the context should make it obvious that the question is "what is the most you would be willing to pay?" This is obviously the case.
I would just give gabe 50k straight up (none of this anonymous bs), a typical unknown a trivial amount where my feeling of goodwill ~equaled my value of the loss of money, and aquantences, friends, and family members would be somewhere inbetween.

You should start a poll
a) $1 for everyone
b) $1 for acquaintances, $50k for your best friend and everyone else is in between (because that's an extremely descriptive non-obvious answer)

Wow, I think that's the first time Bigred has indicated what he just posted is humorous by adding an emoticon to show one is meant to laugh.
I don't know why, but this struck me as really weird.

Also Isn't this +EV if you are giving it to other (bad) poker players? Like paying 10k to give them 50k knowing they will probably lose it to you.

That is the question. How much would I be willing to pay. Why would I be willing to pay more than $1 out of my pocket when it gets them the same exact amount? There is no need to pay more than $1.
If you say more than $1 what is your reasoning?

I'd pay £500 to give certain friends and family members $50k definitely, I would do more too, if my broke student ass could afford it.
If I had more lollars IRL, I'd go as high as maybe £10k or summat, dunno.

Suppose you say you'd pay a dollar, but the deal maker reneges and says he won't do it for less than $2. You say, OK, I'll pay $2, but the deal maker reneges again. This process continues...
At what point do you tell the deal maker, "F U, you reneger!"?
That point, which should differ depending on who's getting the $50K, is the value of the index.

1st off I have no idea why I keep clicking on this thread. Apparently my life sucks so bad that I need to inflict pain upon myself to make sure I'm still alive or something.
You are seriously missing the point. Add a criterion. I'm setting a limit, if the $$ amount you specify is under this limit said person gets zilch. If the $$ amount you pick is over that limit you have to pay it and said person gets 50k.
So if you said $1 for everyone it's unlikely anyone would get any money.

oh so you're saying someone comes up to me and says "25k to make gabe 50k richer without him knowing you did it." And I'd say "I ain't got 25k." So he says "20k" And eventually he'll hit the highest number i'd be willing to pay.

I've got no idea how much my standard of living would change if I had that much money. I think you need to include in your assumptions a cost of living, because this decides how much you're willing to give away. E.g. if you're cost of living is $50,000 and you want to save $50,000, that leaves you $100,000 to spend on giving people money or taking it away.
Of course if you have an incredible hatred for someone you might be willing to spend your entire lifes savings and not eat for a year to send them busto.

did any of you guys read this part? this is an incredibly comprehensive rating system

My bankroll is the amount of money I would spend or lose before I got a job. It is calculated by adding my net worth to whatever I can borrow.

also "you would never financially benefit from this gift"
thus, giving money to random poker fish is not a good idea, etc.

Very first post in this thread I misunderstood the process.
After that I realized it (the thread) was stupid and decided to fuck around with you guys. Add in a long day at work and I had plenty of time to mess with ya.
