I don't know if you've heard of these, but they make these things called "Cellular Phones" and I was thinking of getting one.

I'm probably one of the last remaining people in the United States to not get a cell phone, but I was wondering if you guys had any specific recommendations regarding plans, minutes, phones, service, etc.

I'm willing to pay around $40 a month or so (I'm pretty sure I can afford it )

I've been doing some research and so far
this
plan looks good. Let me know your thoughts. Thanks.

Cell phones are evil. I will not have one again until my job pays for it.

Just don't get AT&T wireless.

My phone doesn't work inside buildings on campus.

AT&T wireless sucks nuts, but they were just bought out. Tmobile has been kind to me so far, got a great plan for my fiance an I, 100$ unlimited minutes basically.

Anything but Nextel. They have the spottiest coverage and the two-way radio feature is a silly novelty.

I've been very happy with Verizon.

I've had Cingular, AT&T, Nextel and several others that I can't remember (I've been using cell phones for uhh...16 years...omg, that sucks). Cingular has been the best by far for me.

The key thing to remember is that GSM phones still don't work that great in the US, but they're getting better. Someone like Verizon that offers CDMA will probably offer you better coverage today, but GSM is where all the development dollars are going, so it's probably a better bet to go with a GSM service. Rule of thumb: if it uses a SIM card then it's GSM.

Oh, and strongly consider getting a phone with Bluetooth and a Bluetooth headset, if you can afford it. Coolest thing since sliced bread. Really.

Haha, I actually had that phone. It was my first. Back in 92 or 93... something like that.
