So I signed up for a new package deal through verizon for internet, tv (DirecTV) and telephone, all for $106/ month.
They also had a promo, and I just received a coupon for $200 off a mini Netbook (sells for $299). When going to redeem it, I now see an option where I can apply the $200 coupon to any of their laptops.

Seems pretty slick, and is super-small. But I've never used one. Perhaps it has limitations that would be important to me.
What's the word on these netbooks? Should I drop the easy $100 and get a netbook to dick around with? Or should I go for a new laptop and apply the $200? My laptop is 7 years old, and I've been considering that it's time to replace anyway. It works okay still, and I could probably ebay it for $400-$500.

a 7 year old laptop for $500? Is it encased in gold or a numbered collector's item or something?

lol. I did one ebay search and saw similars for $400-500. The 1-minute research drill. Now that you mention it, $500 really doesn't sound realistic. Thx.
I also had no idea that netbooks are for girls. Srsly. But now that my masculinity has been challenged, I need to go the other way, obv.

Yeah, if you buy a netbook you might as well get a Blackberry Pearl and frost your tips.

A new netbook will not run any faster than your current laptop. If you're going to get a new laptop, then make it an upgrade.
