Hey folks...
I'm looking forward to losing my job of 12 years here in a few weeks. I've got about 6 months pay socked away in high yield savings and CDs, and should get another 8 weeks severance + unemployment. So, I'm seriously contemplating what to do with myself. As some of you know, I've been a hard core alcoholic all my life and kicked a 23 year habit almost 9 months ago. I feel like I've got a great opportunity to do something different, someplace different -- something really cool. I am currently a Network Analyst for a wireless data network - kinda like cellular, but not voice. I live in Gurnee, IL which is north of Chicago right by the Six Flags, cheeseheads are just to the north of me.
I took a vocational aptitude type test (CISS - Campbell Interest and Skill Survey) and the results were pretty cool. I scored high across a broad range of areas -- I guess that means I'm easily amused. Since there are so many possible occupations listed, I thought this would be a fine opportunity to amuse all the wonderfully warped minds that inhabit this forum.
I'll list all the jobs, and some places, and other categories -- you guys mix and match, and feel free to add in your own ideas. I'll let you know where I end up.

The oceanographer one really jumped out at me for some reason. Combine my scientific bent with an adventure on the high seas, sounds good. Maybe because its sooo different from being a cubicloid in the sprawl of chicagoland. I have no idea what it would take to go there, I haven't done a lick of research. I figure the smartest thing would be to ask the FTR guys first, of course.

I am an architect (in training). Its a pretty fulfilling job, but pays about 1/3 of what I make at poker. Also you have to go to school for 5 years.

I studied the $6 all-you-can-drink draft beer establishments in college. In between, I went to the University of Kentucky three times. Major was CS, doing some C+ programming and microprocessor design and such. Managed to hold a 4.0 for about 2 years before I dropped out for the last time. Never did get my degree.
Worked in restaurants for 11 years and still loove to cook. Worked at the wireless place for the last 12 and am the go-to guy for the really tough problems. I am relatively smart and quick with numbers. I make logical and intuitive leaps. Got a 26 on my ACT in 9th grade. I am hyper perceptive, like Mickey Rourke's character in Rumblefish. I really do key way into stimuli and sensory input and to the point of being overwhelmed with too much of it. I have Generalized Anxiety Disorder and am on lots of medications that I dont want to be on. However, I do well at helping to resolve conflict between individuals becuase I understand both sides. I like animals and small children and skipping rocks with my nephew. I think I would make good reads at live poker. I am a good teacher because I can pay attention to my student and assess exactly his level of understanding of what I am saying, and tailor the conversation to maximize that. I can do the Rubik's cube with my feet. I was a decent 2-guard in high school basketball. I ran a 5:11 mile. I can have a technical conversation with the guru in the AT&T Network Management Center about the train that derailed and cut the fiber carrying 357 T3's which is why my 7 T1's are down and most of New England is without data service. I can analyze real-time over the air logging and identify coverage issues. I can give one update to management and turn right around and give a completly different update to a customer, and both will come away understanding and happy.
I can quit after 23 years of drinking, drugs, arrests, accidents, and injury.
I can do anything I want.

I'm trying to think about some other options too, but that certainly is a possibility. I'd have to get much better and really tighten up on the discipline.

after your mile time, i got completely lost in that computer mumbo jumbo. you should probably stick to that.
sounds like you're smart enough to get people to pay you to do whatever you want though.
edit: i just realized i've been registered at FTR for 366 days. how bout that?

One option is to get a job with a cellular company while I go to The Ballistic Fireworks Test Pilot School. There's quite a few of the big cell companies around here in chicagoland.

Ever thought of doing air traffic control? Pay is higher than you think, and the job is more intellectual than you think. Further, you can do it through the military, which satisfys all sorts of adventure badassness. And you get BCT (basic combat training), which is just plain fun.
