Ok so I have been w/o a cell phone for like 5 months since my parents wont pay for one and I didnt have a source of income. Now I got some cash and I definetly need one.
*Whats a good company to go with?
*I spend most of my time up in Grand Rapids and I know a ton of people egt pretty shitty reception up there(prob only Les_Worm can help me with this tho)?
*I am only looking to spend about 40-45 a month for a plan, I dont really need that many minutes or anything I want voice mail and caller ID and all that jazz tho.
*I want to have a camera phone for sure, whats the best way to get a free phone from signing up?
*Whats a good place to get the cell phone and the plan, online or in a store?
Thanks for any help, and helping to bring me into the year 2006 right

Verizon gives good deals when you start a plan. The monthly plan I have is like $42.95 for 700 minutes and unlimited text (I'm pretty sure on those numbers). I get good reception in Bowling Green, Ohio, so if you're in southern Michigan, I think you'll be okay. The camera phones will be marked down drastically since you're starting your plan, like, my $150 phone was $40 or something in that area. I'd go into one of their stores and check it out. =)

Then get one of those pay as you go. When you have money you can use it when you dont you dont.

Hey prozach. I have cingular. If you live on campus in allendale you might not wanna go with them. I get service everywhere except there. I don't have classes in allendale though (i always go downtown) so i don't any problems. cingular is great just not if you stay on that campus.

I got enough to pay for while I am at school, as long as I dont have to buy like a $50 phone and pay $60 a month.
My only other expense would be alcohol lol
And I am living in the dorms on allendale campus, next year probably in Campus View apartments.

I have sprint in the chicago area and I love it, samsung and sanyo phones are all that Ive had and I love them. Let me make this perfectly clear though, YOU DO NOT WANT A FREE CAMERA PHONE. The phone I bought cost nearly 500$ with tax, excessive you think? Maybe, but it was not that much only because it was one of the first video phones. It cost that much because its a BETTER phone. My girlfreind constantly complains about her phone, it rarely gets good reception, and the buttons are anything but ergonomic(sp?).
Im not telling you to spend 500$, but dont go for some silly free phone deal, youll be upset with what you get. The picture quality will be terrible, and the phone will be a cheap product.

I second Boost's post....... Go with Sprint and either a Sanyo or Samsung (i've had both) and you'll be fine. A friend of mine got a free black and silver Samsung camera phone from Sprint and it works fine. I agree not to get the cheap Nokia or whatever full size phone they usually offer.

I'm from Grand Rapids.
My Nextel gets bad service in GR, but really good service when I'm at school in Mt. Pleasant. I used to have a Verizon back home in high school and it rocked, four bars pretty much anywhere.
Nextel has some cheap plans, I love their phones and most of my friends have them so I use the 2-way function a lot (unlimited and free included in my plan). But I wouldn't recommend it at GVSU. Last week I was at my buddy's apartment out there and I didn't get any service.

Tmobile works for me but I'm in NYC. I know some people say Tmobile sucks when you get futher from big cities. I think Verizon and Tmobile are the two best right now. Verizon may be better overall coverage but more expensive ($10+ more for same plan). Tmobile uses GSM phones which are world phones. Verizon uses CDMA or some shit. That's US only (maybe canada too). AT&T sucked when I had them, so I don't know how cingular is but I haven't heard anything positive about them. Sprint sucked too.
The Razr V3 is a great phone. I don't use the camera much but the recepton and battery life is the best. Plus it looks cool and has tons of extras...and is hackable. Free games, ringtones, whatever.
I got two Razrs for free via wirefly.com in July. The other site to check is letstalk.com. Both offer the hottest phones after mail-in rebate. I used both with no issues.

I think I am gona go with Tmobile, they have a 1500 anytime minutes for 39.99 a month which I odnt see how I can use 1500 minutes in a month(well know that I am sorta back with a girl maybe it could be close)

if you can do a two year contract, this choice is easy, verizon, motorola e815, free, done and done. if the 2 year contract is no good i can't help you. whatever you do don't get sprint i can't believe people are actually recommending that.

lol I went with sprint 400 anytime, free nigth and weekends for 34.99 a month got a LG 225(I think) camera phone for $30. 2 year contract tho 
So far I am happy but yet to make a call as my lady friend is working and I went to call her first before anyone else.
