Well I finally got around to attempting to download my pictures from my newfangled camera onto my computer.
So I attach all the cables, I see my photos on the computer, I figure they are on there, I hit the erase all on my camera, I unplug the cables ... and the pictures never got transferred.
  
So then I tried to do the process over again, but I had erased the pictures from my camera so there is nothing to transfer.
Can you help the retard recover his photos or am I doomed??

You may have been viewing the photos in the camera directory or via the camera's browser software. Basically, when you plug your camera into your computer, it becomes an external drive. You can then copy files from your camera to your computer. Instead, you may have viewed and erased the files on your camera before any transfer was initiated.
Did you try browsing directly on your camera's display through the photos on its memory card? If your photos are not there, they're gone. I don't know how to un-erase files on those cards.

X pretty much nailed it. Sounds like your best bet is taking memory card to data recovery shop. Not sure what that would cost.
