My cousin was in a bad diving accident about 48 hours ago. His legs were slashed by the prop of a careless boater who didn't yield to the diver-down flags. The guy that hit him is an emergency physician. Instead of stopping and rendering aid, it appears he fled the scene and met his lawyer back at the dock.

Rob appears to be out of the woods as far as the life-threatening aspect goes, but both legs have been amputated below the knee.

So yeah, I don't like to beg, but I'm begging for donations. They're all going to Rob to help him in whatever way he needs. We don't know how much insurance will cover, and it'll be years before we see any money from any lawsuit that gets filed. If you can spare a few bucks, Rob's family and I would really appreciate it.

 That's brutal. Glad your cousin's going to live and seems like he has the attitude to still make the best of life. Hope that doctor ends up taking it up the bum.

Thanks guys. Yeah its a really fucked up one-in-a-million accident. He'd been unconscious since the accident until about 10pm yesterday. Then he woke up and... I just can't imagine how horrible that moment of realization of what happened must have been like for him.

But he's going to be fine, and hopefully the fucker that bolted will go to jail. I dont know whether I want him to go to jail or not - I guess I'd rather half of the income he makes goes to Rob, and he won't make shit while in jail. But we have to sue for that, and it could be years before he sees a settlement.

My family thanks you all.

 That's really terrible. Many years ago I was victim to a negligent boat driver (also a physician), but the outcome was not nearly as bad as this.

One piece of advice I can give is to go after the doctor's insurance company as fervently as you can, and do what you can to have a 'solid' case. What I mean by this is related to back when I had my collision, I saw a lawyer, but because I was so young, so honest, and so trusting I could not recount EXACTLY what happened, and that was the main key, according to my attorney, that would make or break the case. Basically I needed to know exactly how long something specific transpired, but because I did not honestly know if it was 10 seconds or 25 seconds my case was weak. Had my mother 'encouraged' me to remember the events more appropriately towards what my bias should have been, I would have likely gotten the settlement I deserved.

It shouldn't be too tough to nail this guy to the wall. Apparently there were two HD cameras running while it all happened, which is so incredibly fortunate.

Wow that sucks man. That thread and your cousins attitude are pretty inspiring though given the circumstances I must say. It's to be hoped we could all be so positive (and have such a good support circle) in such circumstances. Best wishes with his recovery.
