Im a pretty good bass guitar player, so im trying to embark on the pinnacle of all bassplaying achievement:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sr8OUccYQLk

Its a bass solo originally performed by the fusion jazz bassist Jaco Pastorius.

I know we have a few bassists among us here at FTR, so i was wondering if any of you have learned this song or attempted it. If so, plz aim me and help me learn it. If not, lets have a race to see who can get it first.

Yea the hardest part about that song, is the artificial harmonics. For example, in a couple of parts of the song, he frets the 2nd position with his index finger, and stretches his pinky over to the 6th position to make the harmonic.

Is that you on the youtube vid Renton?

I tried learning a little of it a few years back when I was playing all the time. I gave up after a month of working on it and getting almost no where, though it did teach me a bit about harmonics. I think I managed to slop my way through the first minute or so.

If you're interested in learning some other tough pieces, "Partitta in A Minor" by J. S. Bach is a good one to try out. It's a flute solo someone transposed for the bass. No harmonics, but it will push your left hand pretty hard.

In any case, good luck. "Portrait of Tracy" is the Mt. Everest of the bass.

Pretty sweet, Renton. I may have to give that a try though it seems most of my bass time anymore is spent gigging, not enough time to learn this kind of cool shit.
