I'm buying a TV for my new apartment (moving in with gf) and need advice. I've settled on a model/brand but need to decide on size. I'll be in a NYC apartment (decent sized which means small anywhere else) with about 7-10 feet between couch and tv. I have my eyes on a 42 and 47 inch LCD tv. My nerd sense says get the 47 but pragmatic me says that might be too much and the 42 may be a better choice. Both are reasonably priced. I'll use this for bluray movies, hd sports, ps3, and xbox.

I have a 50inch, and I live in a small condo. I sit about 10ft away from it.
At first it seemed like it was huge, but now I want bigger!

Um for just an extra 10% of cost, go with 47"
When I first got a 52", I felt it was too big, but got 'used' to it, and the next one I purchase will be even bigger. If you can, though, I would recommend going for better picture quality over size. So if you can find some LED or something, even if it's a little smaller, it may be a much better choice

I have a 37" Vizio SV370xvt and love it.
Minor point - I've noticed some larger tv's produce quite a bit of heat (and use more electricity too).

electricity is included with rent (ie not charged) so I could care less about it

Definitely go bigger.
My dad cheaped out last year and bought a 32". Even my technophobic mother commented "it's kinda small". Their living room isn't very big, but a 37" or even 42" would have been much better.

Yeah def go as large as you can. I've got a 46" maybe 2.5m away, it was huge the first week then I wanted a bigger one. I mean it's fine, I'm not gonna get rid of it or anything, but if I was buying again I'd go bigger for sure.
And don't go for the newest most expensive ones if you're not gonna calibrate it properly/have good signals/can't tell the difference between it and the previous generation.

not sure how I'd feel about buying a used TV though
if you're worried about price find a place that will do no interest financing and pay it off gradually (but make sure you pay it off or they will butt rape you with ridiculously high interest)

My former roommate and others have bought used/refurbished from Amazon. They're tested thoroughly and have guarantees.

not sure where the diminishing returns curve lies for tv size these days, but when i bought my plasma a couple of years ago it was around the 42 inch area

I bought a 52" and it's fantastic. I'm upset that I can now purchase a 60" television for the same price as I bought the 52" for years ago.

same here, I got a 52-inch almost four years ago, expensive as shit back then and we felt like we couldn't afford it (we could have made it work), I wish I would have had the foresight to go bigger too.
I'm telling you, bigred, go BIG, maybe even step up to the 52-inch model (might be a stretch, not sure how big your apartment is). Once you buy it, during the first movie you watch, a tear will (almost) come to your eye because you are going to think to yourself, "I'm in a god damned movie theater right now.....wait, I'm in my own home!"
I'm pretty sure the first movie we watched was "Crank." We had our speakers blaring and the bass in full effect. It was a magical moment to say the least. (EDIT: besides the fact that we were watching "Crank," although I loooooooove Amy Smart)

Bigger=better these days. The quality of the picture in today's tvs allow you to sit closer and still see great picture quality. I had the same dilemna about what tv to get and in the 42" size range on up you should check out the plasmas. In larger sets, they compare favorably to the LCD's. I am going to get the 65" Panasonic VT25 3D Plasma when it becomes available online (retail only for now) and can't wait.
