I can't cite the source but I remember hearing that it's actually incredibly good for the child to breastfeed until some age that we would find insane. It may have been as far as 8. I think the article/source blamed social norms for suggesting a much much earlier date to quit.

I vaguely remember reading some study which suggested that 12 months was the ideal, and after that there wasn't any benefit...but no harm either (aside from being a weirdo).
Feel free to cite me as a reliable source while repeating this information.

The wife of a guy I used to work with years ago was a La Leche League member and breastfed her kids to some ridiculous age. It was really quite creepy to watch these walking talking school-aged kids get a boob whenever they wanted, often in public. I'm supportive of women who breastfeed their infants but get a grip.
