I think it blows ass.
But I think MLB using Bonds as a target to draw attention away from the players union and mlb managements complete fuck up of drug testing is prolly worse.

I think it's a disgrace to the game. This is coming from a guy that played competitive baseball for 15 years and used to watch MLB every day when I was a kid but really cant bare to watch it anymore for various reasons. Bonds represents one of those reasons.

I give the guy props for hitting that many damn home runs. It's not as special as Hank Aaron hitting 755, but it's still an awesome feat.
The past twenty years or so is going to go down as the "Steroid Era." How will we look back upon this era ten, twenty, forty years from now? It's hard to say. What I do know, though, is that we're not even close to knowing the whole story on this era. Like, we're probably at the tip of the iceberg on knowing how huge the problem of performance enhancing drugs was (and probably still is) in baseball.
Major League Baseball, the media, the players themselves, and fans of the era have all played key roles in creating this mess. Lots of people knew what was going on and *chose* not to do anything about it until a ton of our sacred records began getting smashed.

Bonds is a disgrace to the game. He admitted to the U.S. grand jury that he used steroids then yesterday he has the nerve to say that "this record is not tainted".
Hopefully Alex Rodriguez can stay healthy.

UG put it very well.
I don't like Bonds b/c he generally seems like an a-hole, but I don't think the record isn't worth celebrating b/c he used steroids. Hundreds of other guys have been using steroids the past 20+ years and none have gotten close to 756. Are the career batting average and triples records tainted b/c they were set when ballparks were twice as big? The career wins, ERA and shutouts records b/c it was the "dead-ball era" and pitchers didn't rest 4 days between starts?
It's the steroid era in baseball, and a ton of other sports. Put the record in context, but it still took an incredible baseball player to break it.

On a more serious note.
Comparing players from different Eras is silly.
What about all of the other advances in Technique, Medicine and Nutrition that also give today's players an edge?
What about Bond's positional advantage. If he wasn't gunning for the record I would guess he would have hung it up last year. He's not exactly putting up numbers to be feared this year.
It's the nature of mankind to progress. Do greater things and create greater people. I think it's silly to rule out drugs as part of that process. Used well, they're safe and allow for people to grow beyond their natural limits.

He admitted he took the "the cream" and "the clear", whether he knew it or not he took steroids. And everyone knows he knew what he was doing. The same people that think Bonds wasn't/isn't on steroids are the same that don't think O.J. did it.

Playing in the "dead-ball era" or in bigger ballparks might be an advantage but those players weren't doing illegal drugs to enhance their performance. Those players just played the game, they couldn't control those conditions.

Point taken. But I think enough players have been taking steroids the past 20 years (pitchers and hitters) that the blame can be spread much, much wider than just across Barry's shoulders. Why vilify him for breaking a record that so many others using steroids couldn't? Why not vilify the 100's (if not thousands) of minor-leaguers using steroids who still can't make it to the bigs? Barry's a great hitter and they suck, so I choose to applaud Barry. And it's naive to think that cheating in baseball just started with steroids. Gaylord Perry, a HOFer, threw greaseballs, and obviously plenty of other pitchers did too. Amphetamines, corked bats, the list goes on. It's a game, people cheat, if they get caught they should be punished. If they break a record, it should put it in context, but people who say it's "ruining the integrity of the game" and shit like that make me laugh.

None of this really matters cause A-Rod is going to hit 800 anyways. I'm not personally a Yankee/A-Rod fan but I have always admired his work ethic and he has always seemed to be classy.

Im not really a fan but like fnord said, records from 1567 or w/e cant stay unbroken simply because of the last decade's advances in suplements for athletes.
But certainly steroids or their use will have an effect on whether it is a real record or not.
The fact of the matter is he broke it and that you have to respect whether or not it was done mostly on drugs.

Whether the drugs are or aren't a factor, (I believe they were a huge factor) Bonds is still a complete Fucktard and I for one think that baseball should have Banned him for life years ago for being an asshole, just to save the embarrassment that is now in their yard. He is the epitome of everything wrong with todays athlete, he doesn't give a shit about the fans, his teammates or the league. He could die tomorrow and I still won't buy a paper to read about it.

I don't understand what baseball is all about, being English and all. But from my point of view, it seems that this Bonds geezer isn't a wanker individually, he is a representation of this age in sport, and his individual case is being blown out of proportion by the media as he is a record-setter.
