Yeah it went really fast, basically like an all inclusive 90 minute scorsese flick.

I hate the intro scene (not sure what to call this... the little scene that is to music that will be the same for every episode.) Its very Big Lovesque, and while the sort of abstract metaphorical style works well with Big Love, I just don't like it for BWE.
Things did move really fast though.. I'm so accustomed to The Wire and Treme.. the whole developement of Jimmy moving out of the nest was so rushed and so we missed a lot of character development it seems.
I was a bit confused with who was who as far as the visiting gangsters were. Who did Capone come with? The young guy and the card cheat are from NY, the guy who argued with the young guy at the table is from the Chicago outfit, where is the wop who lost his marbles at the end from? Who arranged his demise? Why?

Capone was with the chicago guys, the old italians. They stole from the NY guys. I'km assuming the NY guys figured it out and killed the old italian guy, maybe, or the other older guy from chicago did. We'll find out more later

I really liked the "you can't be half a gangster" line delivered by jimmy.. but his little rant leading up to it was such weaksauce..

I hope they won't be doing too much of the OMG THERE WAS RACISM/ANTISEMITISM/SMOKING/WHATNOT in the future, I've already got Mad Men for that on mondays.

They could do that without making it seem awkward and unnecessary. The blackface stuff was fine, I didn't like stuff like the close-up on the tobacco ad and the book though. Basically they seemed to be put in just for the "shock" value, the book especially took focus away from the actual story.

Should I rephrase that? "Presently I hope that future episodes won't focus on how these current issues were even more widespread in the past".
Didn't see Millennium, but it has time travelers and Kris Kristofferson - it has to be awesome!

It also bugged me that all the signs etc. were all perfect, like they recently came out of a set design paint shop or something...
No wear and tear in the 20s I guess.

Atlantic City in the 20's was like today's Vegas. You don't see wear and tear on the strip.

The thing is with really well thought out high quality hour long dramas (think the wire).. the entire body makes up an amazing story. We are so used to watching sitcoms on tv, so we are trained to expect a complete standalone something out of 30 minutes or 1hr.
Most people that I've talked to said that they almost gave up on the wire after the first few episodes. I didn't have this issue, but I can understand it. You just have to be patient with these epic hour long dramas that strive to be more than a high production value themed soap opera (think true blood.)

Yeah, boost, I also really hated the opening credits. It's obvious that it was created by the same people who did true blood / six feet under / etc, and they normally do an awesome job, but it didn't seem appropriate to this show at all. Even a different song on the same video might be 1000% better. Maybe I just hate that song.

ya, the music was def horribad. But I guess why I really hate it is that while this show is study of the various characters, one of the major characters is the setting. However they have almost ignored this in the opening credits by putting so much focus on Nucky himself. Yes hes the main character, but from those opening credits my mood is not altered to be in a better state to watch the show.
I really hope that they change the opening credits like they did with the wire.. otherwise I can see myself getting tilted just before each show starts for years to come.

i don't think i could watch a show like this waiting a week between each episode. it would take time to develop the characters and story and i just don't have the patience for it. i don't really watch much tv but when i do, it's so much nicer going from episode to episode and not having to wait. sounds like it could be good but probably will wait til i can dl it or something. but then again i don't even have cable.

This is where I realize the only TV I've watched in the last 8 years is True Blood and cartoons.

I agree with everyone else that it all happened kind of fast. Almost felt like it could have been a standalone movie where they were setting up for a sequel. Meh ill watch the next episode.

A lot of people have been saying that this episode was a bit boring and such. We must give it time to develop. The first episode simply showed a shitload of potential. GOGOGO BOARDWALK EMPIRE!

This is why I find it sad when people can't wade through "boring" episodes. God forbid the first episode isn't the most exciting episode ever. This show is getting sososo good...each episode is better than the last

Ok, haven't gotten past the first Tivo'd episode of Boardwalk yet, but have to throw in the .02 on True Blood...
I agree it is total crap, but if watching it with my wife makes her hot, especially the episode where the woman is chained/tied to the ceiling and the guy pretty much destroys her, gets me some serious lovin, I will watch it as much as she wants.

The look on Luciano's face when he realized it was his mom, not his wife, was lol.
Also Torio walking past the downed Mick boss as he tries to grab at Torio's sleeve made me laugh.

1) Luciano's guys, allegedly.
2) I had the same question. Here are my thoughts: he is a very holy man that never cheats on his wife, etc. He may have found Mrs. Schroeder attractive and began to beat himself because it is wrong for him to covet when he's already married...or something.
Holy people be trippin'.
