OK i know its not poker, didnt know where else to post though.
Is blackjack beatable? or is it a mugs game?
None of the casinos near me offer any poker games (except for 3-card-stud i think its called..).
Ive always avoided gambling on games like blackjack, roullette and craps etc. But is blackjack beatable consistently? or is the house the only winner over the long term? ive never tried my hand at counting cards and i dont think i'd be able to pull it off without a pen and paper at the table

Don't try to count cards until you have memorized the basic strategy charts like the back of your hand. You need to be able to make correct basic strategy decisions while dealing with distractions (talking to other players etc) before counting enters the picture.
Once you know basic strategy you can do ok in the short term depending on the house rules. Check out our http://blackjack.flopturnriver.com/ section for examples of good and bad house rules.

Why would you try when poker is very beatable? I guess I don't see the point. The house will kick you out if they catch you card counting.

Ha most "card counters" are just suckers like everyone else. People trying to beat a very well put together with a shoddyass system they read about in a book and haven't tried yet. To be good you have to be VERY good.
And as far as beating the game, with perfect blackjack strategy you're a slight dog.
